Adolescent-Dog Relationship Quality and Coping With Peer Stress.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescence is a developmental period involving social and peer transitions, and within this context peer stress can contribute to social anxiety. Fostering adaptive coping strategies for youth to effectively manage this peer stress is crucial for developing resilience. Relationships with pet dogs may be one way of supporting effective coping through social support and physiological regulation. However, the specific nuances of youth-dog relationship quality have not been explored in the context of social anxiety. METHODS: We analyzed survey data collected in the United States fr

Overview of the Linking Exercise for Advancing Daily Stress (LEADS) Management and Resilience Randomized Controlled Trial in African American Families.

BACKGROUND: Chronic stressors place African American (AA) adolescents at greater risk for developing chronic diseases. Resilience-based interventions that empower youth to cope with daily chronic stressors have shown improvements across a broad range of outcomes, however, no previous study has evaluated a family-based resilience-stress and coping plus positive parenting intervention on improving physical activity (PA) in AA families. OBJECTIVE: To describe the design and methodology of the Linking Exercise for Advancing Daily Stress (LEADS) Management and Resilience trial, for evaluating the

From diet to drinking behavior: Ketogenic diet decreases ethanol intake in young adult female mice.

The normalization of ethanol consumption in Western societies represents a major public health concern, particularly when drinking begins during adolescence. The ketogenic diet (KD) has demonstrated therapeutic potential in various conditions, including substance use disorders. This, together with evidence showing that the diet does not significantly affect locomotor activity or aversive and spatial memory in adolescent male mice, makes it an interesting tool for addressing ethanol consumption during a critical developmental period: the transition from adolescence to young adulthood. However,

Efficacy of the peer-led ''Honest, Open, Proud'' group program to improve stigma stress and quality of life in adolescents with mental illness: randomized controlled trial.

Adolescents with mental illness (MI) often experience public stigma and self-stigma and struggle with the dilemma whether to disclose their MI, which may reduce their quality of life (QoL). Disclosure decisions are central in coping with MI and stigma, as disclosure may improve well-being and facilitate help-seeking, but can be risky. The peer-led Honest, Open, Proud (HOP) group program was developed to support disclosure decisions and to reduce self-stigma. In this two-arm 2:1-randomized controlled trial, 113 adolescents with MI aged 13-21 years and at least moderate disclosure-related distre

Depression, Gaming Disorder, and Internet Addiction in Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often have various psychiatric comorbidities, particularly depression. In recent years, gaming disorder (GD) and Internet addiction (IA) have been identified as common comorbidities of ASD. We administered three self-administered screening instruments to adolescents with ASD to assess the severity of depression, GD, and IA. The participants were 10-18-year-olds with ASD. They were asked to complete three questionnaires to assess depressive symptoms, GD, and IA: the Patient Health Questionnaire for Adolescents (PHQ-A), Ten-Item Internet Gaming Dis

Which should be targeted first? The comorbidity of sleep disturbances and anxiety symptoms among adolescents: Cross-sectional and longitudinal network analyses.

BACKGROUND: The comorbidity of sleep disturbances and anxiety is well-established, but which symptoms to prioritize for intervention remains unclear. Academic stress, a key factor worsening both, is common among adolescents facing growing academic demands. Understanding how it affects both comorbidities from a symptomatology perspective is crucial for developing targeted interventions. METHODS: The longitudinal survey of 34,494 adolescents was conducted twice (Mage = 12.89 [1.76] years). Adolescents were categorized into three groups based on academic stress scores' mean ± 1 standard deviatio

Decoding personality functioning: the impact of DSM-5 pathological traits mediated by emotion dysregulation and metacognition.

BACKGROUND: Personality disorders (PDs) have long been studied in adulthood, with relatively limited attention to their developmental course during adolescence. Recent research, however, underscores the importance of early identification and intervention in youth, as personality pathology can be reliably detected in this period and is associated with significant functional impairments. Grounded in the DSM-5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD), the present study explores potential intrapsychic mechanisms linking maladaptive trait domains to global personality functioning in adole

Virtual Intervention for Binge Eating (VIBE): Study protocol for a user-informed mobile intervention for dysregulated eating and weight gain prevention in adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric overweight and obesity continue to be major public health issues. Loss of control (LOC) eating and overeating are two obesity-related phenotypes affecting approximately 30 % of adolescents with overweight/obesity that may undermine weight control treatment outcome. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) has promising effects on dysregulated eating, but effects on weight are modest, access is limited, and developmental changes in self-regulation (which may limit implementation of treatment skills) are often ignored. METHODS: In the current proposal, we will apply human-center

Sibling and Parental Military Service and Suicidality Among Adolescents in the United States.

INTRODUCTION: This study aims to examine whether having a sibling and/or a parent on active duty in the military is associated with suicidality-think about death, better off dead, think about suicide, plan suicide, and attempt suicide-among 12- to 17-year-old adolescent girls and boys in the United States. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Descriptive and multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted using pooled cross-sectional public-use data from the 2016-2019 National Survey of Drug Use and Health. Analyses were weighted and standard errors were adjusted for the complex sampling design.

Adolescent utilization of school based mental health services in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Over 14 million adolescents have a diagnosable mental, behavioral, or emotional disorder yet only 20% receive adequate mental health services. There is a critical need to identify accessible and effective pathways to treatment. School based mental health services (SBMHS) are an optimal setting for timely identification, effective management, and convenient delivery of evidence-based mental health care. METHODS: Using data from the 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, we employed structural equation modeling to examine the relationships between utilization of SBMHS and scho

Examining the role of social bonds on prescription misuse among adolescents in the United States.

INTRODUCTION: Prescription misuse (PM) among adolescents in the United States is a significant public health issue, with a reported prevalence of 4.9% in 2022. Understanding the role of social bonds such as parental attachment, peer influence and school engagement is crucial for developing effective prevention strategies. METHODS: Data from the 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health comprised 11,997 adolescents aged 12-17 years. PM was measured as a binary variable, and social bonds were assessed through scales measuring school bonds, parental bonds and community engagement. Binary logis

Depression in left-behind adolescents from single-parent families: a nomogram based on multidimensional risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a significant issue affecting adolescents' mental health. While depression research is relatively extensive, studies focusing on left-behind adolescents from single-parent families remain limited. Due to their unique family structure, this group is more susceptible to multiple stressors, increasing their risk of depression. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to construct a predictive model based on a nomogram to identify the multidimensional characteristics of depression risk among left-behind adolescents from single-parent families, providing theoretical and practical evide

Cannabis expectancies mediate the association between social media use and cannabis experimentation in early adolescents: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Social media exposure may influence early cannabis use behaviors in adolescents, potentially increasing the risk of future problematic use. Minimal prior research has investigated the role of cannabis expectancies (i.e., beliefs about the anticipated positive or negative effects of cannabis) and their role in mediating cannabis use initiation in early adolescence. OBJECTIVE: To examine the prospective association between social media use and cannabis experimentation in a diverse U.S. sample of early adolescents, and to determine the extent to which cannabis expectancies mediate th

Sex differences in the neuroimmune response following heavy, binge-like alcohol exposure in adolescent rats.

Adolescents who consume alcohol show a high prevalence of binge drinking, which has been linked to brain damage and neuroimmune reactions that increase risk for developing an alcohol use disorder (AUD). Adolescent female drinking patterns have surpassed males, yet little is known about damaging effects of alcohol in females. Known sex differences in neuroimmune reactivity, specifically microglial reactivity, suggest that the female brain will differ from males. Therefore, we examined indicators of neuroimmune activation and neurodegeneration following 2 days of heavy, bingelike exposure in ado
