The extrinsic innervation of the pelvic organs in neonatal and adult female rats is described. Mainly an in toto acetylcholinesterase method is used; moreover, acetylcholinesterase is demonstrated in sections. The hypogastric plexus is defined as the nerve plexuses caudal to the inferior mesenteric ganglia comprising the uterine cervical ganglia and various smaller ganglia. The origin of the hypogastric plexus is formed by the hypogastric nerves, bundles of nerve fibers from the lumbar and cranial part of the sacral sympathetic trunks, bundles of nerve fibers from the inferior mesenteric gangl

The thoracic cardiac nerves were stimulated in each of 21 dogs anesthetized with alpha chloralose. Recordings were made of heart rate, blood pressure, and contractile force from all four cardiac chambers. Walton-Brodie strain-gauge arches were sutured to both atria, and to three locations of each ventricle, representing both anterior and posterior surfaces. The functional autonomic components of each nerve were summarized and classified into four basic types. Types I and II were both located medial to the thoracic vagi. These were shown to contain both sympathetic and parasympathetic component

It is proposed that essential hypertension is an exaggeration of the tendency for blood-pressure to rise with age, that it results from a repeated sequence in which a small rise in pressure, possibly resulting from an autonomic nervous overactivity, produces changes in the kidney which maintain the rise of pressure and become the basis for a further rise.

A method of radiometry of the whole body was applied to the study of iodine metabolism in 288 patients directed for examination with a preliminary diagnosis of thyrotoxicosis. The state of iodine metabolism was disturbed in half of them. In 9.1 per cent the changes corresponded to thyrotoxicosis, hypothyroidism. In the rest--disturbances followed the type of dissociation of iodine metabolism, i.e. only one of its phases altered, with a normal value of the rest. A total of 4 dissociation types were noted. The most frequent were the following: normal accumulation of iodine in the thyroid gland i

A case-control study was performed to investigate the autonomic nervous function in vibration syndrome. The subjects were 20 patients with a history of Raynaud's phenomenon (vibration white finger (VWF) (+) group), 20 patients without such a history (VWF(-) group), and 20 healthy workers (control group). Their ages and years under medical treatment for vibration syndrome were matched individually among the groups. They were examined using the test of R-R interval variations in the electrocardiogram at rest and during deep breathing and the test of plasma cyclic nucleotide (cyclic AMP and cycli

Sex hormones and migraine are closely interlinked. Women report higher levels of migraine symptoms during periods of sex hormone fluctuation, particularly during puberty, pregnancy, and perimenopause. Ovarian steroids, such as estrogen and progesterone, exert complex effects on the peripheral and central nervous systems, including pain, a variety of special sensory and autonomic functions, and affective processing. A panel of basic scientists, when challenged to explain what was known about how sex hormones affect the nervous system, focused on two hormones: estrogen and oxytocin. Notably, oth

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Heart rate variability (HRV) reflects autonomic nervous system activity and is influenced by age, environmental conditions, and circadian rhythms. Information regarding these interactions in horses maintained under tropical conditions remains limited. This study aimed to characterize 24-h heart rate (HR) and HRV patterns in horses raised under tropical conditions and to investigate the effects of aging and environmental factors, including air pollution, on autonomic regulation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifteen clinically healthy horses aged 4-20 years were allocated to three…

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a prevalent clinical arrhythmia with a high incidence of disability and mortality. Autonomic nervous system (ANS) plays a crucial role in the onset and persistence of AF, and can lead to electrophysiological changes and alterations in atrial structure. Both animal models and clinical findings suggest that parasympathetic and sympathetic activity within the cardiac ANS could induce atrial remodeling and AF. Remodeling of the cardiac autonomic nerves is a significant structural basis for promoting AF. Given the challenges faced by conventiona…

The results of this study are the first step in determining if long-lasting deficits to the autonomic nervous system occur following a diagnosis of concussion. However, concussions do not seem to have lasting effects on autonomic function. Overwhelmingly, dysautonomia is not present during chronic recovery from concussions or in individuals with RHT from contact-s …

Primary outcome measures include electrocardiography/heart rate variability (to assess autonomic nervous system function) and transcranial doppler sonography (to assess cerebral blood circulation in basal cerebral arteries). Secondary outcomes measures include continuous blood pressure, electroencephalography, functional near-infrared spectroscopy, respiratio …

INTRODUCTION: A mounting body of literature emphasizes the potential negative effects of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on both mental and physical health throughout life, including an increased risk for developing cardiovascular disease (CVD). Since CVD is one of the leading causes of mortality and morbidity worldwide, it is of great importance to advance our understanding of the effects of on CVD. This holds both for the actual incidence and for intermediate biological pathways that may convey CVD risk, such as imbalance in autonomic nervous system regulation, resulting in a chronicall…

The various types of ophthalmoplegia described in the second half of the 19th century were attributed to degeneration of the oculomotor nuclei. In the middle of the 20th century, a reversal of opinions ascribed these disorders to a primary muscle lesion, and this was accepted as a dogma for 20 years. However, the finding of mitochondrial abnormalities, not only in muscles but also in the nervous system and in a variety of viscera, gradually led to the concept of a multiple system syndrome. Advances in biochemistry then revealed multiple alterations of the mitochondrial function, especially in

Zinc (Zn2+), an essential trace element, has been increasingly recognized for its crucial role in neural development and regeneration. Although its function in central nervous system neurogenesis is well documented, its involvement in parasympathetic innervation remains insufficiently characterized. In this study, we examined the neurochemical interplay between Zn2+ and the neurotrophic factor neurturin (NRTN) during submandibular salivary gland (SMG) development, with particular emphasis on the PI3K/AKT signaling axis involved in parasympathetic innervation. Employing an ex vivo embryonic mou
