Interrelationships between production and reproductive diseases in Holstein cows. Conditional relationships between production and disease.

By methods of conditional odds ratio with a set of 2960 Holstein lactation records, relationships between occurrences of disease in a lactation were examined. There were strong positive relationships between retained placenta and metritis and between cystic follicle and luteal cyst. Interaction was among dystocia, retained placenta, and metritis and among retained placenta, cystic follicle, and luteal cyst. Metritis was an intervening variable between retained placenta and cystic follicle, retained placenta was a common cause variable for metritis and luteal cyst, and cystic follicle was eithe

Behavioural and health status assessment of cattle in a semi-intensive system.

The productivity of ruminants is largely hinged on nutrition and management systems. Hence, a 2-month study was conducted to assess the behaviour, welfare, and health status of White Fulani (WF) and Sokoto Gudali (SG) cattle breeds raised under a semi-intensive farming system. A total of 60 cattle were evaluated using Qualitative Behavioral Assessment (QBA) parameters such as activeness, friendliness, and agitation; assessed skin condition (e.g., cleanliness, hair loss, ocular and nasal discharge, diarrhea, and lameness). Data/observations were taken twice weekly. 10 mL of blood samples were c

Genome-wide CRISPR screen identifies ELFN2 as a key regulator of host autophagy and lipid metabolism important for Toxoplasma gondii proliferation.

Toxoplasma gondii is a globally prevalent foodborne zoonotic pathogen that threatens animal production and human health. Consumption of unde … d resistance to T. gondii infection and reduced parasite burden, highlighting the value of ELFN2 in breeding Toxoplasma-resistant animals. Notably, naturally occurring loss-of-function mutations in ELFN2 could be found in certain pig breeds, further indicating the feasibility of breeding T. gondii-resistant animals like pigs, to reduce the transmission of …

Comparative analysis of morphological atlas at different HH stages of embryonic development for SPF ducks and SPF chickens.

Avian embryos are widely used models in developmental biology and biomedical research, yet systematic comparative morphology across specific pathogen-free (SPF) poultry species remains limited. We investigated the embryonic development of three SPF duck breeds Shanma (HSM), Shaoxing (HBW), and Jinding (HJD) and SPF White Leghorn chickens (BM8 line) under controlled SPF conditions. Fertilized eggs were incubated at standardized temperature and humidity, and embryonic growth was monitored daily. Developmental stages were classified according to the Hamburger-Hamilton (HH) system and grouped into

Molecular detection and association of 12.1 kb deletion within the high mobility AT-hook 2 gene in the Netherlands dwarf rabbit (Oryctolagus Cuniculus).

Rabbits are mainly bred for human consumption and medical research. However, it has been recently showed that several rabbit breeds are also kept as pets for human leisure. The Netherlands dwarf rabbit is currently in the immense interest of many Vietnamese customers due to its personality and miniature stature. However, 12.1 kb deletion from position 44,709,089 to 44,721,236 bp in the high mobility AT-hook 2 (HMGA2) gene on chromosome 4 was identified as the structural variant causing dwarfism and altered craniofacial development in this breed. It has been documented that HMGA2 plays an impor

The influence of risk factors on bovine leukemia virus infection and proviral load in egyptian cattle.

Bovine leukemia virus (BLV) is the etiological agent of enzootic bovine leucosis (EBL), which affects cattle globally. In Egypt, BLV control strategies have been ignored because of the shortage of BLV research studies and the silent infection in most animals. This study aimed to identify the risk factors associated with the prevalence of BLV among dairy and beef cattle from six different geographic and climatic provinces in Egypt. Additionally, risk factors affecting the BLV proviral load (PVL) among the positive cattle were targeted. The total BLV prevalence in cattle from six investigated Eg

Effects of heat stress on conception in Holstein and Jersey cattle and oocyte maturation in vitro.

Korea, located in East Asia in the northern hemisphere, is experiencing severe climate changes. Specifically, the heat stress caused by global warming is negatively affecting the dairy sector, including milk production and reproductive performance, as the major dairy cattle Holstein-Friesian is particularly susceptible to heat stress. Here, we collected artificial insemination and pregnancy data of the Holstein and the Jersey cows from a dairy farm from 2014 to 2021 and analyzed the association between the conception rate and the temperature-humidity index, calculated using the data from the c

Prevalence of tick-borne haemoparasites and their perceived co-occurrences with viral outbreaks of FMD and LSD and their associated factors.

Species of Theileria, Babesia, and Anaplasma are Tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) that are prevalent throughout the world, particularly in the tropical and subtropical regions. Associated diseases of Theileriosis, Babesiosis, and Anaplasmosis, respectively, represents a major threat to livestock production in many countries. TBPs have a high prevalence in different geographical locations in Egypt. Foot and mouth disease (FMD) and Lumpy skin disease (LSD) are considered endemic bovine viral diseases in Egypt. Our clinical observations during the epidemics of LSD and FMD viruses showed higher prevale

Volume reduction of the jugular foramina in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels with syringomyelia.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the pathogenesis of the chiari-like malformation in the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (CKCS) is incomplete, and current hypotheses do not fully explain the development of syringomyelia (SM) in the spinal cords of affected dogs. This study investigates an unconventional pathogenetic theory for the development of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure waves in the subarachnoid space in CKCS with SM, by analogy with human diseases. In children with achondroplasia the shortening of the skull base can lead to a narrowing of the jugular foramina (JF) between the cranial base sy
