The contribution of the microbiome to sporadic colorectal cancer (CRC) has traditionally been interpreted through the detection of individual tumor-enriched taxa or isolated virulence factors. However, accumulating evidence indicates that CRC-associated microorganisms often act as structured polymicrobial consortia rather than as independent agents. This review proposes an expanded ecological framework for understanding the role of oral taxa in colorectal carcinogenesis. Oral bacteria, including genera Fusobacterium, Parvimonas, Peptostreptococcus, Porphyromonas, Prevotella, Streptococcus, and

The COVID-19 pandemic delayed the consultation of many patients with specialists. We present the case of a 57-year-old patient with HIV infection, COVID-19 pneumonia, and Hodgkin lymphoma. Discordant immunohistochemistry results from biopsy samples delayed the hematological diagnosis and initiation of oncological therapy. The late diagnosis of HIV infection at the stage of severe immunosuppression, along with advanced Hodgkin lymphoma and COVID-19 co-infection, represents a complex pathogenic triad that is challenging to manage. Healthcare-associated COVID-19 infections pose a significant risk

Canine leishmaniosis (CanL), caused by Leishmania infantum, is a widespread vector-borne disease. In Italy, an endemic region for CanL, overlapping transmission of L. infantum and tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) like Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Ehrlichia canis is increasingly reported. Dogs with clinical leishmaniosis often show higher co-infection rates and pronounced clinicopathological abnormalities. This study presents a systematic literature review and new findings from southern Italy, focusing on co-infections with E. canis and A. phagocytophilum in clinically healthy L. infantum seroposit

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a multi-organ genetic disorder that affects more than 100,000 individuals worldwide. Chronic respiratory infections are among the hallmark complications associated with CF lung disease, and these infections are often due to polymicrobial communities that colonize the airways of persons with CF (pwCF). Such infections are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality, with studies indicating that pwCF who are co-infected with more than one organism experience more frequent pulmonary exacerbations, leading to a faster decline in lung function. Previous work established a

Co-infections of different pathogenic microorganisms usually cause complex effects, and receive more attention. Red-grouper nervous necrosis virus (RGNNV) and Vibrio are the common viral and bacterial pathogens of fish, and are often detected simultaneously in diseased fish. However, the understanding of co-infection of RGNNV and Vibrio is still unclear. In this study, we have established a grouper (Epinephelus coioides) model of the co-infection of RGNNV and Vibrio harveyi (V. harveyi). Compared with single pathogen infection, co-infection of RGNNV and V. harveyi significantly caused more sev

BACKGROUND: Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a significant cause of respiratory infections, particularly in children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals. However, data on HMPV infection in people living with HIV (PLWH) are limited, and cases of co-infection with influenza A virus in this population have not been previously described.

Historically, most mathematical models of infectious disease dynamics have focused on a single pathogen, despite the ubiquity of co-circulating pathogens in the real world. We conducted a systematic review of 326 published papers that included a mechanistic, population-level model of co-circulating human pathogens. We identified the types of pathogens represented in this literature, techniques used and motivations for conducting these studies. We also created an interaction index to quantify the degree to which co-circulating pathogen models include across scale and/or pathogen-pathogen intera

BACKGROUND: Bordetella bronchiseptica is a primary pathogen in canine infectious respiratory disease (CIRD), or kennel cough, capable of independently causing respiratory illness and contributing significantly to co-infections with other viral and bacterial agents. Despite its critical role in disease transmission and persistence, the epidemiology of B. bronchiseptica in CIRD remains poorly understood. Limited data on co-infection prevalence and associated risk factors hinder effective management and control of this pathogen.
OBJECTIVE: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to clarif

Co-infection by intestinal helminths and Plasmodium spp. may be common in endemic communities. In 2003, Uganda instituted a national deworming program, with anti-helminth medication provided twice annually to children 6 months to 5 years of age, but few follow-up studies have been conducted. Several studies have identified a relationship between helminth infection, Plasmodium spp. infection and malaria severity. However, the relationship is not well defined, and results are inconclusive. We analyzed 177 stool samples from a cohort of children with severe malaria enrolled in two hospitals in Ug

BACKGROUND: The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a public health problem and may result in co-infection with other pathogens such as influenza virus. This review investigates the co-infection of SARS-CoV-2 and influenza A/B among patients with COVID-19.
METHODS: This meta- analysis included 38 primary studies investigating co-infection of SARS-CoV-2 with influenza in confirmed cases of COVID-19. The global online databases were used to identify relevant studies published between December 2019 and July 2024. Data an

BACKGROUND: Diarrhea remains a major health concern in children under five years, with enteric pathogens being key contributors. However, the interactions among these pathogens and their combined effects on disease severity are not well understood. The study investigates the interactions among co-infecting enteric pathogens on diarrhea pathogenesis within an epidemiological framework.
METHODS: This large-scale, multicenter case-control study was conducted from January 1, 2024 to December 31, 2024, across four tertiary hospitals in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, China. Stool samples were colle

Dogs are companion animals commonly present in spaces shared with humans. However, this close contact may facilitate the transmission of zoonoses, such as canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL). Additionally, dogs are potential hosts of endoparasites that can influence the clinical manifestations of CVL due to immunological interference occurring in parasitic coinfections. This study aimed to investigate the occurrence of endoparasites in domestic dogs seropositive for CVL and associate their clinical manifestations with the presence of intestinal helminths. We analyzed 47 seropositive dogs (51.0…

Trichinella is a genus of foodborne nematode parasites that comprises 13 taxa. In northern Canada three taxa, T. nativa, T6, and the recently discovered T. chanchalensis, are commonly found in wild carnivores. These parasites are of public health concern, particularly in northern Canada, where human infection rates are markedly higher. Our first objective was to determine whether T. chanchalensis, reported in Alaska, Yukon, and the Northwest Territories (NT), is present in wolverines from Nunavut. Our second objective was to determine the prevalence of co-infections and competition among Trich

The intersection of recent mpox outbreaks with HIV infections has become cause for concern in the disproportionately affected community of gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (gbMSM). There is a growing need to explicitly consider how behaviour plays a role in the spread of such diseases transmitted through close, prolonged contact. In particular, the duration individuals spend single or in relationships has yet to be incorporated into deterministic co-infection models, potentially underestimating the protective effects of stable partnerships. We propose an mpox and HIV co-infec

Ixodes ricinus is an important vector of infectious human and livestock diseases in Europe. Co-infections of pathogens in ticks and hosts have been reported. Tick cell lines offer a useful model system for study of co-infections. We present a review of the existing literature on co-infections in tick cell lines. Previous studies have demonstrated the usefulness of tick cell lines in studies on co-infection of different pathogens and their interaction with the tick microbiome. We also carried out a preliminary study to investigate the effects of co-culturing Borrelia burgdorferi and Anaplasma p

BACKGROUND: Patients with immunodeficiency syndromes associated with anti-interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) autoantibodies are prone to a wide range of infections, particularly those caused by intracellular pathogens such as nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) or Talaromyces marneffei (T. marneffei). However, disseminated Mycobacterium kansasii (M. kansasii) infection co-occurring with T. marneffei infection is relatively rare. Here, we present a case of disseminated M. kansasii disease complicated by T. marneffei infection in a patient with anti-IFN-γ autoantibodies.

The manuscript disputes the exclusive mono-infectious way of thinking, which presumes that for every infection only one pathogen is responsible and sufficient, when infectious vectors, close contact and reduced immunity meet. In situations involving heavily colonized anatomical sites such an approach often ends in insoluble contradictions. Upon critical reflection and evaluation of 20 years research on spatial organization of vaginal microbiota it is apparent, that in some situations, pathogens may act and operate in permanent, structurally organized consortia, whereas its individual component

Respiratory viral infections, including respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), parainfluenza viruses and type A and B influenza viruses, can have severe outcomes. Bacterial infections frequently follow viral infections, and influenza or other viral epidemics periodically have higher mortalities from secondary bacterial pneumonias. Most secondary bacterial infections can cause lung immunosuppression by fatty acid mediators which activate cellular receptors to manipulate neutrophils, macrophages, natural killer cells, dendritic cells and other lung immune cells. Bacterial infections induce synthesis
