Five pairs of strains of S. flexneri each differing in the colour of their colonies after growth on Congo red agar have been tested for their ability to cause keratoconjunctivitis in the guinea pig eye, for the presence of the 140 Md virulence plasmid, for the presence of the virulence marker antigen, and for their ability to adsorb to hydrophobic surfaces (cellulose nitrate filters and Phenyl Sepharose). The results suggest that the presence of the 140 Md virulence plasmid provides the bacterial surface with a rather high degree of hydrophobicity; exceptions have been found.

The effect of inhibitory extracts of human granulocytes (chalone) on the circadian rhythm of myelopoietic colony formation in soft agar (CFUc) was studied over one year. Normally, the number of bone marrow CFUc shows a strong circadian rhythm. Preincubation of the cells with the extracts before plating modulated this rhythm with phase shifts and modifications of amplitude. The effects of the extracts oscillated between significant inhibition and stimulation over a 24 h period. No significant seasonal variations in the inhibitory effects were found.

A case of pseudomonas endocarditis of biliary origin with impairment of the mitral and tricuspid heart valves is reported. Former history of the patient did not reveal narcotic addiction or previous open-heart surgery. Osteomyelitis is an uncommon complication of pseudomonas endocarditis. Echocardiography was a useful diagnostic method in the present case, showing the vegetation on the tricuspid valve. The medium described is a simple yeast extract broth capable of growing large number of Legionella neumophila, the causative organism of Legionnaires disease. Filtration was chosen as a means of sterilization, since medium that was autoclaved did not support growth without the presence of Norite A. The filtered medium gave rapid cell growth and maintained the initial antigen production. The observed generation time was 99 min with a maximum cell population of 2 X 10(2) COLONY-FORMING UNITS PER ML IN APPROXIMATELY 40 H.

The entomopathogenic fungus, Beauveria bassiana, was isolated from pulmonary lesions of a dead American alligator (Alligator mississipiensis) at the Oklahoma City Zoo. Colonies of the fungus, which had sporulated in vivo, were found in the thoracic air spaces. Septate, branching hyphae and fungal spores were seen in stained histologic sections of pleura and lung. Dissemination to other viscera had not occurred. This case indicated that B bassiana, a rare vertebrate pathogen, may be a fatal mycotic agent in captive reptiles.

Unusual cultures of a Microsporum species were isolated from eleven patients who had either tinea capitis or tinea corporis or both. Although the macroconidia produced in the primary cultures resembled those of M. canis, hyphal morphology and colony characteristics were different from any of the more commonly occurring Microsporum species. Careful examination of subcultures showed that the isolates were composed of two species; M. canis and M. distortum, whose relationship remains enigmatic.

Tracking and lineage tracing are widely needed tasks in biological image analysis. For cells that grow and divide, tracking is challenging because cells change in number, shape, and size throughout a recording. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains a challenging malignancy with limited therapeutic options. This study aimed to investigate the antitumor effects of periplogenin, a bioactive compound derived from Cortex Periplocae, and to explore its underlying mechanisms in HCC.
