Corrigendum to "Determinants of quality of life in post lingually defeaned Cochlear implant users" [Int. J. Pediatr. Otorhinolaryngol. (99), December 2025, 112659].

OBJECTIVES: Cochlear implant (CI) is an essential rehabilitative intervention for individuals with severe to profound hearing loss. This stu … d with better physical domain experience (b: 0.076; 95 %CI 0.01 to 0.14), whilst longer duration of deafness prior to implant negatively predicted environmental domain scores (b: -0.08; 95 %CI -0.12 to -0.34). Achieving verbal communication was associated with an 8.321-point increase in the environmental domain score (95 % CI 0.68 to 15.96). No significant …

An X-Linked Ataxia Syndrome in a Family with Hearing Loss Associated with a Novel Variant in the BCAP31 Gene.

OBJECTIVE: Pathogenic variants in B-cell receptor-associated protein (BCAP31) are associated with X-linked, deafness, dystonia and cerebral hypomyelination (DDCH) syndrome. DDCH is congenital and non-progressive, featuring severe intellectual disability (ID), variable dysmorphism, and sometimes associated with shortened survival. BCAP31 encodes one of the most abundant chaperones, with several functions including acting as a negative regulator of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) calcium ion (Ca2+) concentration. Here, we characterize an X-linked syndrome, its underlying genotype, and a functional ev…

Our long-term goal is to define therapeutic interventions for congenital deafness and balance disorders with the expectation that the approach may also be exploited for therapeutic intervention postnatally. In the inaugural volume of this series, we introduced electroporation-mediated gene transfer to the developing mouse inner ea …

Narcolepsy is a common phenotype in HSAN IE and ADCA-DN.

We report on the extensive phenotypic characterization of five Italian patients from four unrelated families carrying dominant heterozygous DNMT1 mutations linked to two distinct autosomal dominant diseases: hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy with dementia and hearing loss type IE (HSAN IE) and autosomal dominant cerebellar ataxia, deafness and narcolepsy (ADCA-DN). Patients underwent genetic analysis of DNMT1 gene, neurophysiological tests investigating sleep, auditory functions and peripheral nervous system, ophthalmological studies including optical coherence tomography, lymphoscin…

Long-term effects of caffeine therapy for apnea of prematurity.

BACKGROUND: Methylxanthine therapy is commonly used for apnea of prematurity but in the absence of adequate data on its efficacy and safety. It is uncertain whether methylxanthines have long-term effects on neurodevelopment and growth. METHODS: We randomly assigned 2006 infants with birth weights of 500 to 1250 g to receive either caffeine or placebo until therapy for apnea of prematurity was no longer needed. The primary outcome was a composite of death, cerebral palsy, cognitive delay (defined as a Mental Development Index score of <85 on the Bayley Scales of Infant Development), deafness, …

Usher syndrome: animal models, retinal function of Usher proteins, and prospects for gene therapy.

Usher syndrome is a deafness-blindness disorder. The blindness occurs from a progressive retinal degeneration that begins after deafness and after the retina has developed. Three clinical subtypes of Usher syndrome have been identified, with mutations in any one of six different genes giving rise to type 1, in any one of three different genes to type 2, and in one identified gene causing Usher type 3. Mutant mice for most of the genes have been studied; while they have clear inner ear defects, retinal phenotypes are relatively mild and have been difficult to characterize. The retinal functions…

Analysis of the mitochondrial DNA from patients with Wolfram (DIDMOAD) syndrome.

Wolfram or DIDMOAD (Diabetes Insipidus, Diabetes Mellitus, Optic Atrophy and Deafness) syndrome, which has long been known as an autosomal-recessive disorder, has recently been proposed to be a mitochondrial-mediated disease with either a nuclear or a mitochondrial genetic background. The phenotypic characteristics of the syndrome resemble those found in other mitochondrial (mt)DNA mediated disorders such as Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) or maternally inherited diabetes and deafness (MIDD). Therefore, we looked for respective mtDNA alterations in blood samples from 7 patients with…

A Case of Autosomal Recessive Retinitis Pigmentosa with Vitelliform-Like Appearance at the Macula Associated with Novel MYO7A Variant P.Ser383TrpfsTer64.

Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is an inherited disease involving progressive degeneration of rod and cone photoreceptors. It is highly heterogeneous and the resulting clinical phenotypes may differ in age at onset, progression, and severity. Mutations in the myosin VIIA (MYO7A) gene have been known to cause Usher syndrome, a condition characterized by RP and deafness. In this report, we present a rare case of RP without hearing loss associated with a novel MYO7A variant, p.Ser383TrpfsTer64. With this case, we also wanted to draw attention to the rare vitelliform-like appearance in the macula in pat…

Connexin Hemichannel Inhibition and Human Genodermatoses.

Pathogenic variants in genes encoding connexins that cause skin diseases, such as keratitis-ichthyosis-deafness (KID) syndrome and hidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) or Clouston syndrome, display increased hemichannel activity. Mechanistic insights derived from biophysical studies of the variant connexins support the hypothesis that inhibition of the acquired hemichannel activity could alleviate epidermal pathology. Use of pharmacological blockers and engineered mAbs in mouse models of HED and KID confirm that hemichannel inhibition is a promising target for new therapeutic approaches to KID …

Bilateral Middle Cerebellar Peduncle Infarction Presenting With Vertigo and Hearing Impairment Mimicking Peripheral Vestibulopathy.

Bilateral middle cerebellar peduncle (MCP) infarction is a rare manifestation of ischemic stroke. We report a middle-aged male patient who presented with acute onset of vertigo, left ear deafness, and severe ataxia. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain confirmed the presence of infarction in the bilateral middle cerebellar peduncles due to stenosis of the posterior circulation arteries. This case highlights the importance of recognizing this clinical syndrome, as the symptoms may resemble those of peripheral vestibulopathy. Timely recognition is of paramount importance, given that unt…

[Simultaneous occurrence of facial neurinoma in internal auditory canal and middle ear paraganglioma in patient. Unusual combination and difficult surgical task].

The 59-year-old patient complained of hearing loss on the left, ear murmur for a long time, periodic pain and discomfort in the left ear, dizziness for 6 months. She was found to have concurrent vestibular schwannoma in the internal auditory canal and temporal bone paraganglioma. Both tumors were removed in one operation. The schwannoma was removed by translabirinth access due to preoperative deafness, while the glomus tumor was removed during this access. Postoperative biopsy showed the presence of two unrelated diseases: paraganglioma (ICD-0 code 8690/3) and schwannoma (ICD-0 code 9560/0).
