Construction and deformation mechanism of water-responsive starch-based shape memory emulsion gels.

This study developed a water-responsive, starch-based shape memory emulsion gel (SMEG), systematically evaluated its moldability and shape memory performance, and thoroughly analyzed its structural mechanism. By comparing gels prepared from corn starch (CS), potato starch (PS), and tapioca starch (TS), it was found that PS-based shape memory emulsion gel containing 25% (m/v) PS (PS-SMEG (25)) exhibited moderate hardness, good flexibility, and a uniform, dense 3D network, enabling sharp folding without creases and demonstrating excellent mechanical properties. Under 50 °C, PS-SMEG (25) achieved

Designing for success in early phase haemophilia clinical trials: historical lessons and emerging principles for next generation therapeutics.

INTRODUCTION: Hemophilia drug development has progressed through five therapeutic eras: plasma-derived concentrates, recombinant proteins, extended-half-life molecules, non-factor rebalancing agents, and gene therapy. Each transition depended not only on molecular innovation but also on early-phase trials that addressed critical translational and safety questions before pivotal testing. AREAS COVERED: This review examines the evolution of early-phase hemophilia trial design across these five eras, identifies lessons from successful and unsuccessful programs, and proposes a ten-domain framewor

Colorectal Cancer: Epidemiology, Risk Factors, Signaling Pathways, Clinical Features, Screening, Diagnosis, and Management.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains a leading cause of cancer incidence and mortality worldwide and is increasingly characterized by two converging realities: a substantial global burden and a rising incidence of early-onset CRC. This review synthesizes current advances in CRC epidemiology, risk factors, signaling biology, clinical presentation, screening, diagnosis, and management across the care continuum. We frame CRC as a systems-level disease in which genomic instability, epigenetic dysregulation, metabolic remodeling, tumor microenvironmental evolution, and gut microbiota interactions conver

Dynamic tracking of multidimensionally annotated chemical fingerprints in non-targeted screening: a molecularly resolved method for contaminant source tracking.

Environmental transformations and multi-source mixing of organic contaminants (OCs) in real river systems substantially complicate reliable source identification during downstream transport. This study proposes a molecularly resolved source-tracking method within a non-targeted screening (NTS) framework that integrates multidimensional chemical fingerprinting with along-stream dynamic tracking, enabling stable source identification under complex transport and transformation conditions. By organizing compounds into chemically coherent molecular families, the proposed multidimensional fingerprin

Graphene-Enabled Breathomics: A Translational Roadmap from Fundamental Physics to Non-Invasive Point-of-Care Diagnostics.

Selective molecular recognition of trace volatile biomarkers in humid breath remains a fundamental coordination challenge at graphene interfaces. While exhaled breath contains a complex matrix of more than 3500 volatile organic compounds, clinical transition has been largely challenged by the selectivity-humidity paradox. This review traces the evolution of graphene transduction platforms from fundamental quantum phenomena to coordination-governed interfacial engineering strategies enabling selective molecular recognition. It critically analyzes the atomic-level interactions governing the inte

Fermentation-driven dynamic formation of salty peptides and mechanisms of saltiness enhancement in sausage.

This study investigates the dynamic evolution of salty peptides during sausage fermentation and their potential for enhancing saltiness perception. Peptide composition shifted from early-stage peptides derived from muscle proteins to a more refined set during later fermentation stages, with pronounced changes in peptide length and abundance distributions by day 6. Enrichment of acidic residues and a structured arrangement of charged and hydrophobic amino acids formed a sequence signature of salty peptides. Molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations revealed receptor-specific binding

Fabrication of electrochemical biosensor with a CD36 aptamer and AuMoS2 heterolayer for tumor-derived exosome detection.

Breast cancer (BC), which is often diagnosed at advanced stages owing to its asymptomatic progression, presents with substantial molecular heterogeneity, leading to diverse therapeutic responses and prognostic outcomes. Among its molecular subtypes, the human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-positive/hormone receptor-negative (HER2+/HR-) phenotype displays pronounced therapeutic resistance and recurrence rate, emphasizing the need for early and accurate diagnostic strategies. In this study, we aimed to develop an electrochemical aptasensor for the detection of cluster of differentiation 36 (

Small Airway Disease in Pre-COPD and Early COPD: Insights Into the Pulmonary "Silent Zone".

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is increasingly recognized as a life-course disorder with origins rooted in early-life insults. However, the current diagnostic reliance on the FEV1/FVC < 0.7 threshold often fails to capture the early phases of disease evolution, particularly within the pulmonary "Silent Zone." This narrative review examines small airway disease (SAD) in pre-COPD and early COPD by integrating physiological, structural, molecular, and diagnostic evidence. Findings from imaging and pathology studies indicate that terminal bronchiole loss, mucus plugging, alveolar att

Epigenetic Control of Cold Stress Tolerance in Plants: Emerging Mechanisms and Applications for Crop Improvement.

Low temperature is an abiotic stress factor that affects plant development and geographic expansion, resulting in significant economic losses in worldwide food production each year. Through evolution, plants have developed intricate adaptation systems, with epigenetic regulation-modifying gene expression without altering DNA sequences-being pivotal in the cold stress response and memory formation. This review provides a systematic overview of the role of the main epigenetic mechanisms, including histone modifications, DNA methylation, non-coding RNA regulation, and chromatin remodeling, in pla

Oxygen-driven shift from Pb(II) lattice incorporation to reversible surface complexation: Exploiting hydrothermal sludge DOM for high-purity vivianite recovery.

Recovering phosphorus from sewage sludge hydrolysate via vivianite crystallization is a promising route for resource recovery, yet Pb(II) enrichment can undermine product purity and stability. Here we reveal a ligand-directed mechanism by which sludge dissolved organic matter (DOM) regulates Pb(II) partitioning between mineral lattices and interfacial complexes. Increasing the hydrothermal temperature to 220 °C promoted the transformation of DOM toward oxygen-rich aromatic components, including highly oxidized carboxyl-rich alicyclic molecules and polyphenolic species, which preferentially bin

Precision medicine in bladder cancer: Redefining treatment paradigms through ADCs, immunotherapy, and molecular subtyping.

Bladder cancer, particularly in its muscle-invasive and advanced urothelial carcinoma forms, has long been constrained by the therapeutic ceiling of platinum-based chemotherapy, with a substantial proportion of patients deemed ineligible for cisplatin due to comorbidities, underscoring an urgent unmet need for novel treatment modalities. The introduction of immune checkpoint inhibitors targeting the PD-1/PD-L1 axis marked a paradigm shift in the therapeutic landscape, solidifying immunotherapy(IO) as a foundational strategy. More recently, antibody-drug conjugates(ADCs) have emerged as transfo

ORF5-based molecular characterization of PRRSV reveals multiple Co-circulating lineages in Vietnam, 2021-2026.

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) continues to pose a major challenge to swine production in Vietnam because of its rapid evolution and genetic diversity. Here, we analyzed 69 PRRSV-positive samples collected from 20 provinces in Vietnam between 2021 and 2026 using ORF5 gene sequencing to characterize the genetic diversity of circulating strains. Phylogenetic analysis demonstrated the co-circulation of multiple PRRSV-2 lineages (L1, L3, L5, L8, and L10), together with a limited presence of PRRSV-1, indicating a genetically diverse PRRSV population within the analyzed

Differentiation therapy in acute myeloid leukaemia: molecular basis, clinical progress, and future perspectives.

Clonal evolution, genetic heterogeneity, and impaired myeloid differentiation are characteristics of acute myeloid leukemia (AML), an aggressive hematologic malignancy. Many patients continue to have poor outcomes even after decades of relying on aggressive induction chemotherapy (7 + 3 regimen), particularly those who are elderly or have unfavorable molecular characteristics. Arsenic trioxide (ATO) and all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) were effective treatments for acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) which changed the therapeutic paradigm from cytotoxicity to maturation-based methods. More recent

Complicated and refractory celiac disease: a model of antigen-independent immune escape and lymphoproliferation.

INTRODUCTION: Celiac disease (CeD) is an immune-mediated enteropathy triggered by dietary gluten and treated with a gluten-free diet. However, a subset of patients develops refractory or complicated forms characterized by persistent immune activation and increased risk of malignant transformation. These conditions challenge the traditional view of CeD as a fully reversible, antigen-driven disorder. AREAS COVERED: This narrative review reframes refractory and complicated CeD as a biological continuum driven by sustained immune dysregulation and partial independence from the antigenic trigger.

A genomic and epigenomic lens into the biology of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) is characterized by uncontrolled proliferation of lymphoid progenitor cells. Advances in genomic and epigenomic profiling have enabled the identification of over 40 molecular subtypes defined by distinct genetic drivers, transcriptional programmes and regulatory alterations. These insights have refined the classification, particularly of B cell precursor ALL (B-ALL) and are increasingly informing risk stratification, therapeutic decision-making and disease monitoring. By contrast, the classification of T cell ALL (T-ALL) has historically relied on immunophen

The Global Landscape of Plasmodium falciparum Drug Resistance Markers, 2005-2025: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Malaria remains a global health threat, with Plasmodium falciparum causing most deaths, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. Although artemisinin-based therapies reduce the burden, drug-resistant parasites threaten control efforts. Mapping the distribution and evolution of molecular resistance markers is vital for evidence-based strategies. This systematic review mapped the global distribution, pooled prevalence, and temporal trends of key P. falciparum antimalarial resistance markers. Following the PRISMA methodology (PROSPERO: CRD4202511098991), databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Go

Global epidemiology and evolutionary dynamics of arboviruses: A systematic review of surveillance, control strategies, and emerging threats.

Arboviral diseases, transmitted primarily by Aedes mosquitoes, represent a growing global health challenge. The spread of dengue, Zika, chikungunya, and yellow fever has been associated with factors such as climate change, urbanization, and increased global mobility. We conducted a systematic review of the literature published between January 2000 and December 2024, screening 487 studies, of which 11 met predefined inclusion criteria and were included in the final synthesis (PROSPERO registration: CRD42021231605). The review integrates evidence from epidemiological reports, molecular surveilla

Personalized mRNA Neoantigen Vaccines in Cancer: Linking Precision Antigen Selection, Immune Remodeling, and Checkpoint Blockade.

Personalized mRNA neoantigen vaccines represent an emerging form of precision cancer immunotherapy designed to generate de novo T-cell responses against patient-specific tumor mutations. Their therapeutic activity, however, depends not only on neoantigen selection and vaccine-induced immune priming but also on whether these responses can remain functional within an immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment. Immune checkpoint blockade provides a mechanistically complementary strategy by relieving inhibitory signaling that constrains vaccine-expanded tumor-reactive lymphocytes. This review examin

Epitaxial Growth of 2D Single-Crystal Spinel Oxide with High-Entropy Driven Magnetic Homogenization.

2D high-entropy oxides (HEOs) are an emerging class of entropy-stabilized materials with unique mechanical, catalytic, and magnetic properties distinct from their bulk counterparts. However, the influence of disordered multivalent cations with varying spin orientations on magnetic exchange interactions remains unexplored due to challenges in synthesizing atomically thin HEOs. Here, the van der Waals epitaxial growth of 2D single-crystalline spinel-typed high-entropy (CoCrFeMnNi)3O4 nanoflakes with a thickness down to two unit cells via a molecular sieve-assisted chemical vapor deposition metho
