Congenital abdominal wall defects, frequently associated with other anomalies, are found in many forms. Consequently, there is still controversy in the literature concerning nomenclature, classification, and pathogenesis. In a case-control study, gestational age and intrauterine growth of 191 preterm singleton infants 1971-82 with cerebral palsy were compared to all preterm live-born singletons in Denmark in 1982 (N = 2203). Polypeptide growth factors are secreted signalling molecules that function as intercellular communicators. Detailed analyses of the expression and function of members of the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) family and their recepotors have demonstrated that the FGF signalling pathways play essential roles in regulating cellular proliferation, differentiation and tissue patterning during vertebrate embryogenesis. Recent studies on the molecular basis of human dysmorphic syndromes have revealed that aberrant FGF signalling during limb and skeletal development can lead to pathogenesis.

Several retrospective analyses of our in-vitro fertilization (IVF) and oocyte donation programmes have been carried out in an attempt to gain clinical knowledge of the factors implied in the aetiology of endometriosis-associated infertility. We report on 2 independent lines of evidence suggesting genomic imprinting of a major gene for psoriasis vulgaris. First, the birth weight of children from psoriatics is influenced by the sex of the psoriatic parent. Children from fathers with psoriasis are considerably (270 g) heavier than children from mothers with psoriasis (P less than 0.004). To determine the risk factors for stillbirth, a case-control study was carried out in a rural community of Haryana. Stillbirths (cases) were identified retrospectively from a household survey, while the controls, matched individually with each case for the month of birth, were live born infants from the same neighbourhood as the case. Linear growth in fetuses with trisomy 18 has not been systematically described. We studied the relationship between long-bone, crown-rump, and foot length and gestational age in 17 postmortem fetal specimens with this syndrome. Of 178 consecutive twin pregnancies, 63 were both monozygotic and also studied prenatally by real-time B-scan (and usually Doppler) ultrasound. Ethanol exposure alters sex steroidogenesis and sexually dimorphic behaviors in rodent offspring. Contiguity to siblings of the same or opposite sex in utero also affects steroidogenesis and sexual dimorphism in rodents. The present study with Long-Evans rats shows that maternal exposure to ethanol during the critical period of rodent organogenesis preferentially affects body weights and increases malformations in offspring dependent on their in utero contiguity to siblings of the opposite sex.

Five new ultrasonic weight formulae incorporating head circumference, fetal femur length, and a correction for oligohydramnios were prospectively analyzed in a group of 198 unselected patients scanned within 72 hours of birth. Comparison with the Shepard formula showed that inclusion of these parameters slightly, but significantly, improved the random error of weight estimation. The best-fit formula was: Log(10) BW = .04355HC + .05394AC - .0008582HC X AC + 1.2594 (FL/AC) - 2.0661.

Paediatric, neurological and psychiatric examinations were done in 71 children with the fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). A subgroup of these patients underwent psychiatric assessment and psychological testing. Psychopathology was also studied in a matched control group.
