Recent clinical neuroimaging studies have revealed a possible relationship between morphological brain changes and the manifestation of psychiatric disorders such as depression, schizophrenia, and alcoholism. Although its biological mechanism is still unclear, the emerging evidence suggests that the alteration of neurogenesis is the key factor for the morphological brain changes of these psychiatric disorders. In our previous work, we analyzed the mechanism of neural network disruption by ethanol using cultured cells, and found a suppressive effect of ethanol on neural stem cell (NSC) differen

BACKGROUND: Perinatal cerebral artery occlusion is responsible for ischemic cerebral infarction leading to brain cavitation and gliosis; the territory of the middle cerebral artery is most frequently involved. The resulting poroencephalic cysts are frequently associated with hemiplegia and epilepsy; that can be managed medically in most cases, only 6-7% of them being refractory to medical treatment. This particular subset of congenitally hemiplegic children will be possible candidates for electrophysiological investigation and eventually for resective surgery. Whatever the kind of surgical tre

Moyamoya disease (MMD) is a progressive cerebrovascular disorder characterised by distal internal carotid artery (ICA) stenosis and compensatory collateral vessel formation. Psychiatric manifestations are rare, particularly in children. We report the case of an early adolescent with previously diagnosed MMD who developed acute-onset psychosis following a febrile illness associated with headache and vomiting. Symptoms included auditory hallucinations, persecutory delusions, emotional lability and Fregoli syndrome, a rare condition in which different strangers are believed to be a familiar perso

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) comprises neurodegenerative syndromes causing progressive deterioration in behavior, language, and executive function, with relative preservation of memory early on. Overlap between the behavioral variant (bvFTD) and nonfluent/agrammatic primary progressive aphasia (nfvPPA) reflects shared frontotemporal network pathology but remains rarely documented in Sub-Saharan Africa, where Alzheimer disease predominates. We describe a 61-year-old Tanzanian man who initially presented with effortful, halting speech, agrammatism, and impaired syntax consistent with nfvPPA. Ov

INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's disease (AD), a neurodegenerative disease, involves early alterations in the gut microbiota. Bile acids (BAs), which are metabolites produced by the microbiota, may impact brain function through the gut-brain axis.
METHODS: By reference to multimodal datasets from the Chinese Preclinical Alzheimer's Disease Study (n = 1397) and the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (n = 1275), we analyzed differences in BA levels and their associations with AD biomarkers.
RESULTS: Lithocholic acid (LCA) -family BAs are associated with the amyloid-β status. Longitudinal cha

INTRODUCTION: Glymphatic dysfunction is implicated in Alzheimer's disease (AD), but its mechanism remains unclear. This study investigated the associations of the analysis along the perivascular space (ALPS) index, brain reserve, and cognitive outcomes across the AD continuum.
METHODS: This study enrolled two cohorts from the local hospital (n = 95) and the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI; n = 178). We calculated the diffusion tensor image ALPS to assess the whole-brain glymphatic function and evaluated its associations with cognition and brain structure.
RESULTS: A higher

INTRODUCTION: Cholinergic pathway degeneration is implicated in Alzheimer's disease (AD), but its individualized characterization in AD and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) remains limited.
METHODS: We constructed lifespan normative models of medial and lateral cholinergic pathways using >6000 diffusion MRI scans from healthy individuals. These models were applied to 1742 scans from 725 participants in the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) cohort. Individualized diffusion abnormalities were integrated into a composite cholinergic pathway degeneration index (CPDI). Group differ

Bilateral vocal cord paralysis (BVCP) is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition. Viral infections such as COVID-19, herpes simplex virus, Epstein-Barr virus, and cytomegalovirus have been widely reported; however, influenza A is a rarely reported cause. We describe a 57-year-old male who developed BVCP following an influenza A infection. Comprehensive investigations, including neuroimaging and nerve conduction studies, ruled out structural, neoplastic, demyelinating, medication-related, and autoimmune causes. A transient CMV viremia was identified but deemed a secondary phenomenon d

Implications of menopause hormone therapy (MHT) for cognitive aging remain unclear despite decades of research. Potential reasons include insufficient consideration of MHT type, despite notable pharmacokinetic differences across formulations, and limited attention to individual differences that may exacerbate cognitive risk. We examined neurocognitive outcomes as a function of APOEϵ4 status, the strongest genetic predictor of Alzheimers disease, and MHT formulation in a sample of older (>70) females (N=8,741). Results suggest formulation- and domain-specific association between MHT and cogniti

Brain networks serving higher cognitive functions are widely distributed across frontal and posterior association zones. Two exceptions have been the parietal memory network (PMN) and salience network (SAL), which are typically restricted to posterior (e.g., posterior cingulate and lateral parietal cortex) and anterior (medial prefrontal and anterior insular cortex) areas, respectively. Using high-resolution neuroimaging, we show that individualized estimates of the PMN extend beyond the posterior set and encompass frontal and insula regions canonically ascribed to the SAL. This suggests that

Chronic stress impacts the brain through complex physiological, neurological, and immunological responses. The stress response involves the activation of the sympathetic-adrenal-medullary (SAM) system and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, releasing stress hormones like norepinephrine and cortisol. While these responses are adaptive short-term, chronic stress disrupts homeostasis, increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative disorders, and psychiatric conditions such as depression. This dysregulation is linked to persistent neuroinflammation, oxidative stress,

Sarcoidosis is a multisystem granulomatous disorder that can rarely involve bone, particularly the skull, where lesions may closely resemble malignant or infectious processes. We report a 60-year-old man with established multisystem sarcoidosis who presented with acute left-sided headache, diplopia, and periorbital pain. Neuroimaging demonstrated a poorly defined left frontal bone lesion with homogeneous post-contrast enhancement. Laboratory evaluation revealed elevated angiotensin-converting enzyme levels, and a supraclavicular lymph-node biopsy confirmed non-caseating granulomas. As systemic

This large-scale study including 2548 healthy adults with no clinical attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) diagnosis intended to clarify the complex relationships between cerebral grey matter volumes (GMVs), ADHD traits, and driving safety behaviours. Path analysis of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) results and questionnaires about ADHD traits and traffic crashes over the past decade revealed significant correlations of ADHD traits with different brain regions relevant to different cognitive functions. The left precuneus responsible for visuospatial cognition was the sole region co

INTRODUCTION: Early risk stratification for clinical dementia could lead to preventive therapies. We identified and validated a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) signature for Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias (ARDR).
METHODS: An MRI ADRD signature was derived from cortical thickness maps in Framingham Heart Study (FHS) participants with AD dementia and matched controls. The signature was related to the risk of ADRD and cognitive function in FHS. Results were replicated in the University of California Davis Alzheimer's Disease Research Center (UCD-ADRC) cohort.

Primary dysmenorrhea (PDM), cyclic menstrual pain in the absence of pelvic anomalies, is characterized by acute and chronic gynecological pain disorders in childbearing age women. PDM strongly affects the quality of life of patients and leads to economic losses. PDM generally do not receive radical treatment and often develop into other chronic pain disorders later in life. The clinical treatment status of PDM, the epidemiology of PDM and chronic pain comorbidities, and the abnormal physiological and psychological characteristics of patients with PDM suggest that PDM not only is related to the

The development of the next generation therapy for Alzheimer's disease (AD) presents a huge challenge given the number of promising treatment candidates that failed in trials, despite recent advancements in understanding of genetic, pathophysiologic and clinical characteristics of the disease. This review reflects some of the most current concepts and controversies in developing disease-modifying and new symptomatic treatments. It elaborates on recent changes in the AD research strategy for broadening drug targets, and potentials of emerging non-pharmacological treatment interventions. Establi

Acute carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning remains a common cause of poison-related death and influences neurological function. An 83-year-old female was transferred to our emergency unit due to hypertension with dizziness, headache, and right hemiplegia. There was no radiographic evidence of ischemic stroke. The family members reported that the patient may have been exposed to CO by briquettes burned inside a closed room. High flow oxygen therapy was given for suspected CO intoxication and her symptoms quickly improved. Although we do not have clear evidence, we presume that hemiplegia in our patie

Sleep-related hypermotor epilepsy (SHE) is a rare syndrome that presents with hyperkinetic asymmetric tonic/dystonic seizures with vegetative signs, vocalization, and emotional facial expression, mainly during light non-rapid eye movement sleep stages. The role of various genes (CHRNA4, CHRNB2, CHRNA2, KCNT1, DEPDC5, NPRL2, NPRL3, and PRIMA1) has previously been reported, though genetic etiology is assessed in less than 10% of cases. We report the case of a 5-year-old female carrying the TSC1 variant c.843del p.(Ser282Glnfs*36) who presented with a mild phenotype of tuberous sclerosis, includi
