The redundant bacterial growth syndrome in the small intestine is associated with the increased total semination of over 10(5) CFU/ml presented by enterobacteria, bacteroids, clostridia, fusobacteria, etc. It is developed at the dysfunction of the gastrointestinal tract, insufficient bacteria inhibition at the time when they come from the large intestine (atony, stasis, bypasses) and is accompanied by the enhanced intestinal barrier permeability along with chronic diarrhea and intoxication. Intestinal absorption disorders cause B12-deficiency anemia, hypovitaminosis and protein deficiency. The

Androgens affect several functions of the human skin, such as sebaceous gland growth and differentiation, hair growth, epidermal barrier homeostasis and wound healing. Their effects are mediated by binding to nuclear androgen receptors. Androgen activation and deactivation are mainly intracellular events. They differ from cell type to cell type and between cells at different locations. The major circulating androgens, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate and androstenedione, are predominantly produced in the adrenal glands, and testosterone and 5alpha-dihydrotestosterone are mainly synthesized in th

Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are a group of hematologic disorders characterized by peripheral cytopenias in the setting of a normocellular or hypercellular bone marrow that morphologically shows trilineage dysplasia. Mechanisms of disease include pluripotent stem cell damage, abnormalities in proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis leading to an ineffective hematopoiesis. A growing body of evidence support angiogenesis as having a key role in the pathophysiology of hematologic malignancies, including MDS. Knowledge and interest in angiogenesis and its interactions with proliferation a

Many forms of human cerebral microvascular disease result from abnormal proliferation and/or degeneration of smooth muscle cells (SMC) in the vessel wall of arteries and arterioles. Human cerebral microvessel-derived smooth muscle cells (MV-SMC) in culture can be used to study the pathogenesis of microvascular disease. Primary cultures were established from nonneoplastic human brain specimens surgically resected and characterized as to their growth properties and phenotype. The cultures have been used to study various factors that may be relevant in the pathogenesis of microangiopathies, in pa

Mutations in the gene encoding extracellular glycoprotein fibrillin-1 (FBN1) cause Marfan syndrome (MFS) and other related connective tissue disorders. In this study, eight mutations have been detected in MFS patients by heteroduplex analysis. These comprise two missense mutations, C1835Y and C2258Y in calcium-binding epidermal growth factor-like domains, two nonsense mutations, R1541X and R2394X in transforming growth factor beta1-binding protein-like domains, one splice site mutation, which has been detected previously, and three small insertions or deletions resulting in a frameshift. The progression of kyphosis in myelomeningocele is independent of skeletal growth and requires early operative correction and stabilization to prevent a loss of sitting ability. In severe cases, only vertebrectomy makes it possible to achieve correction, stability and skin-closure without tension. In 14 patients with myelomeningocele gibbus, kyphectomy was performed, removing two vertebral bodies on average. The average kyphosis angle decreased from 128 degrees to 81 degrees, enabling most of the patients to participate again in social life by restoring wheelchair mobility. Nevertheless, a sig

A 51-year-old Caucasian man with multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) type I syndrome presented with clinical features of acromegaly. Exploration of the pituitary gland only revealed somatotrophic hyperplasia and his plasma growth hormone (GH) levels remained elevated. Production of growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) by an ectopic tumor was suspected and, after additional investigations, a large pancreatic tumor was detected and removed. As the pancreatic tail contained multiple (occult) adenomas, lifelong follow-up was considered necessary. The patient has been recurrence-free for 10 years

Golgi and combined Golgi-electron microscopic (EM) studies were carried out on cats in the terminal stages of GM2 ganglioside storage disease and the resulting data were compared with those from similar studies of other neuronal storage diseases in cats, including GM1 gangliosidosis. The results support the view that only limited types of neurons affected by the lysosomal hydrolase deficiency and subsequent intracellular storage have the capacity to sprout new dendritic-like growth processes from their axon hillocks, and that these neurons are essentially the same in all of these diseases stud

Zinc is indispensable for life from bacteria to man. As a trace element it is included in numerous enzymes or serves as their activator (more than 80 zinc metallo-enzymes). It is necessary for nucleic acid and protein synthesis, the formation of sulphated molecules (insulin, growth hormone, keratin, immunoglobulins), and the functioning of carbonic anhydrase, aldolases, many dehydrogenases (including alcohol-dehydrogenase, retinal reductase indispensable for retinal rod function), alkaline phosphatase, T cells and superoxide dismutase. Its lack provokes distinctive signs: anorexia, diarrhea, t

Purine nucleoside phosphorylase (PNP) deficiency in humans is associated with a severe T cell immunodeficiency. To understand further and exploit this T cell lymphospecificity, we have compared the cytotoxicities and metabolism of deoxyguanosine, the cytotoxic substrate of PNP and of arabinosylguanine, a deoxyguanosine analogue that is resistant to PNP cleavage, in T cell (8402) and B cell (8392) lines in continuous culture established from the same patient. In comparative growth rate experiments the T cells were 2.3-fold and 400-fold more sensitive to growth inhibition by deoxyguanosine and a

Pena-Shokeir syndrome (PSS) is a rare, early lethal disease. PSS is characterized by fetal growth restriction, craniofacial deformities, multiple ankyloses and pulmonary hypoplasia. Because of the primary concern of physical health problems, psychiatric evaluation is frequently underestimated in PSS patients. Our case report describes a child with PSS who presented with autistic spectrum disorder symptoms.
