Mind the "CRP gender gap"! sex differences in CRP evolution over time in neonatal sepsis: a monocentric retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: C-reactive protein (CRP) is a readily available test widely used to assess neonatal sepsis (NS). In children with sepsis or other infectious conditions, CRP is more likely to be higher in females than males, however, evidence is lacking on sex differences in CRP in the neonatal population. This study aims to describe sex differences of CRP evolution in the ascending and decreasing phase after its peak in neonates with likely NS. METHODS: This is a monocentric retrospective cohort study conducted at Etterbeek-Ixelles Hospital in Brussels. We included all neonates born in the facili

Sex-specific considerations in migraine therapy.

Migraine is a highly prevalent and disabling neurovascular disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of moderate to severe headache, often accompanied by nausea, photophobia, and phonophobia. A prominent feature of migraine is its disproportionate burden on women, as evidenced by a higher prevalence, frequency and disability, relative to men. These differences are largely attributed to the modulatory effects of sex hormones on migraine pathophysiology. While the cyclic fluctuations of estrogen across reproductive milestones are known to significantly influence migraine onset and severity, f

Sex-Specific Mechanisms of Perivascular Adipose Tissue (PVAT) Dysfunction in Prediabetes and Diabetes: From Metabolic Crosstalk to Vascular Outcomes.

Perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) is a metabolically active adipose depot surrounding most blood vessels and contributes to vascular homeostasis through local regulation of vascular tone, inflammation, and metabolic signaling. In prediabetes and diabetes, PVAT may shift from a predominantly vasoprotective phenotype toward a pro-inflammatory and pro-contractile state characterized by reduced release of protective mediators and increased cytokine, reactive oxygen species, and vasoconstrictor signaling. Vascular injury may, in turn, further alter the PVAT phenotype, creating bidirectional adipos

Regional Organisation and Sex-Related Differences in Trigeminal Nerve DTI Metrics in Healthy Young Adults.

Trigeminal neuralgia has been associated with microstructural alterations of the trigeminal nerve, particularly at the root entry zone, but region-specific reference data stratified by sex in healthy individuals are lacking. This study aimed to characterise the regional organisation of the trigeminal nerve using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) metrics and volumetry in healthy young adults, describing regional heterogeneity, lateral asymmetry and sex effects. T1-weighted and diffusion-weighted images from 300 Human Connectome Project participants (150 women, 150 men; 22-35 years) were used to bi

The human olfactory bulb in Huntington's disease: sex-specific differences in volume and gliosis.

Huntington's disease is a multisystemic neurodegenerative disorder for which increasing evidence suggests early involvement of brain regions beyond the primarily affected motor areas of the brain, such as the olfactory bulb, which is affected by multiple neurodegenerative diseases. However, the involvement of the olfactory bulb in Huntington's disease and the possible effects of sex on olfactory bulb characteristics in Huntington's disease patients remain poorly understood. In this study, volumetric and glial alterations in the olfactory bulbs of male and female Huntington's disease patients w

Screening and tuberculosis preventive treatment among household contacts of drug-resistant tuberculosis patients: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) is associated with low treatment success rates and increased mortality. Household contacts (HHCs) face an elevated risk of infection and disease progression due to prolonged exposure. Consequently, systematic screening and tuberculosis preventive treatment (TPT) are critical to interrupt transmission within households. However, screening practices and TPT regimens vary substantially across countries and settings worldwide, and the available evidence remains fragmented. This study aims to synthesize evidence on screening strategies and TPT regimen

Research Note on the Role of Infertility and Medically Assisted Reproduction on the Realization of Ideal Family Size in Japan.

Anthrax is caused by Bacillus anthracis. Humans are mainly infected through contact with the fur and meat of livestock. The cutaneous form is the most common form. The skin lesions of typical cutaneous anthrax are characterized by shallow ulcers with black crusts, surrounded by small blisters and nonpitting edema of nearby tissues. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) is a new pathogenic detection method which is rapid and unbiased. We reported the first case of cutaneous anthrax diagnosed by mNGS. Ultimately, the man received prompt antibiotic therapy and had a good prognosis. In con

Sex differences in innate immune cell responses: Impact on cancer immunity and response to therapy.

Sex hormones regulate innate and adaptive immune responses to infection, autoimmunity, and carcinogenesis through genomic and non-genomic mechanisms. Estrogen, progesterone, and androgen receptors are widely expressed on immune cells and modulate their functional responses to pathological insults. While the impact of biological sex on infection, autoimmunity, and cancer risk has long been appreciated, their impact on response to cancer therapy is only beginning to be explored. Combinatorial strategies are being leveraged in the clinic to elicit antitumor immune responses, but the role of sex a

Hormones, heat, and health: a comprehensive review of sex-based differences in brown and beige fat biology.

This review takes a close look at the biology of brown and beige fat, not just as thermogenic tissues, but as active metabolic organs influenced by sex, hormones, age, and even environment. Brown adipose tissue (BAT) and beige adipocytes differ in their origins, gene expression, and regulation. These differences are especially relevant when considering how they behave in males and females. Across both animal and human studies, females show higher BAT volume and more efficient thermogenic activity. Estrogen, acting mainly through estrogen receptor alpha (ERα), increases uncoupling protein 1(UCP

Sex Differences in Biofluid Biomarkers for Alzheimer's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD), the most common cause of dementia, affects twice as many women as men. Moreover, sex is increasingly recognised as an important factor for AD, influencing symptom presentation, progression, disease biology, and treatment responses. In parallel, AD biomarkers are becoming more accessible with the discovery of specific and accurate blood-based biomarkers and their incorporation in AD diagnostic frameworks. This narrative review aimed to summarise sex differences in the concentration and interpretation of biofluid biomarkers for AD. SUMMARY: Biological sex m

Sex Differences in the Associations Among Early Life Adversity, Inflammation, and Cognition.

Early life adversity (ELA) has long been recognized to negatively impact a variety of health outcomes, with increasingly recognized long-term implications for neurocognitive function. ELA may affect the brain through multiple mechanisms, including chronic inflammation. One potential moderator of the pathway from ELA to neuroinflammation to cognitive dysfunction is sex. ELA may leave females potentially even more vulnerable to cognitive impairment in later life. This review discusses the influence of ELA on cognitive function across much of the lifespan, how inflammation is implicated in this p

The Immunomodulatory Role of Estrogen in Malaria: A Review of Sex Differences and Therapeutic Implications.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a significant global health challenge, with substantial mortality rates, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. A notable sexual dimorphism exists in malaria, with males often experiencing higher infection and mortality rates compared to females. OBJECTIVE: This review explores the role of estrogen in modulating immune responses to malaria, potentially explaining the observed sex differences. Estrogen, through its receptors, influences immune cell activation and cytokine production, which are critical in the immune response to malaria. RESULTS: Utilizin

Psychotic-like experiences and cognitive biases in adolescents: birthweight and sex moderating effects.

INTRODUCTION: Genetic and environmental factors are involved in the pathogenesis of psychosis. Obstetric complications such as low birth weight are among the more extensively studied environmental risk factors for schizophrenia and the psychosis spectrum. Cognitive biases, such as "jumping to conclusions" (JTC), are also linked to psychosis risk. The study aimed to examine the occurrence of cognitive biases and psychotic experiences in adolescents and explore whether birth weight is associated with these variables, moderated by sex. METHODS: A total of 240 adolescents (aged 14-15) from Sabade

[Sex-Based Differences and Shared Decision-Making in Myasthenia Gravis].

Myasthenia gravis is an autoimmune disease of the neuromuscular junctions. Studies have shown that its prevalence is slightly higher in females, that female patients are more refractory to treatment, and that their post-treatment quality of life is more difficult to improve. Recently, multiple novel treatment options have become available, and more opportunities for shared decision-making are being observed in the process of treatment selection. Thus, it is necessary to choose the best treatment for each patient through detailed explanations regarding the disease and adequate consideration of

Sex Differences in the Neurobiology of Fear and Anxiety.

Although women are diagnosed with anxiety and stress-related disorders at twice the rate of men, there remains a lack of clarity around how to enhance treatment within each sex to reduce disparate rates of anxiety. However, in recent years, a growing literature has identified neural, cognitive, and physiological mechanisms that contribute to sex differences in fear and anxiety, with the promise of informing tailored treatment approaches. Here, we review recent findings, focusing on human studies among healthy populations as well as among patients with generalized anxiety, social anxiety disord

The dual impact of tobacco spending: crowding out essentials and crowding in addictive behaviors.

Tobacco use, a major preventable risk factor for premature death and morbidity, profoundly shapes individual and household decision-making. Tobacco spending in lower-income economies exacerbates economic strain of the households. To accommodate tobacco costs, many households are forced to reduce essential expenditures on health and education-a phenomenon known as the crowding out effect. This study uses data from Albania's national Household Budget Survey and applies a three-stage least squares method with instrumental variables to estimate Engel curves to shed light on how tobacco use influen

The associations of cash transfers with parental investment and couples' fertility among low-income Serbian Roma.

Welfare incentives, by providing parents access to certain resources, may increase the reliability of parental investment returns and thus increase opportunities to invest in offspring quality vs. quantity and eventually a drop in fertility. Using the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey 6 for Serbian Roma, this study examined whether improvements in resources, driven by cash transfers, encouraged parental greater engagement per child and a drop in fertility. The sample included 1095 Roma couples whereas a couple's number of biological children by number of years married was used as a proxy for f

The evidence is in: accountability needs to be injected into the policy-making process for household food insecurity reduction.

As the problem of household food insecurity perseveres, effective evidence-informed responses are badly needed. The systematic reviews of evidence compiled by the Public Health Agency of Canada provide an important foundation for such action, but they also indicate the need for accountability, so that precious public funds do not continue to be spent on initiatives with no evidence of impact. We need targets for food insecurity reduction and some accountability for policy interventions that come with significant public investments. Household food insecurity rates and the related adverse conseq

Geospatial assessment of household water, sanitation and hygiene conditions and associated factors in Nigeria: A causal relationship model.

Lack of adequate access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) has contributed to increased under-five mortality and morbidity of school-age children in low- and middle-income countries. Despite the global and national intervention programs, access to safe WASH remains a critical challenge in Nigeria. This study employed spatial and non-spatial statistics to establish causal relationships between WASH conditions and household factors in Nigeria. Results show that a large proportion of Nigerian households were still associated with unimproved hygiene (88%), sanitation (47%) and water (25
