[Empowerment of children and adolescents--the role of personal and social resources and personal autonomy for subjective health].

AIM: Scientific research on empowerment so far is nearly exclusively focused on the adult population. Nevertheless, it is possible to show a link between empowerment and a) the developmental psychology concepts of resilience, b) autogenetic concepts and c) concepts of risks and resources. This paper aims to study the role of personal, familial and other social resources as well as personal autonomy for subjective health-ratings. METHODS: A secondary analysis of the health data of 7,000 children and adolescents aged 10-17 years of the German health behaviour in school-aged children (HBSC) stud

Obsessive-compulsiveness and impulsivity in a non-clinical population of adolescent males and females.

Obsessive-compulsive and impulsive behaviors co-occur in certain psychiatric conditions. Some have suggested that these disturbances constitute a spectrum of altered psychologies and behaviors that share an underlying neuropathology. We investigate here whether obsessive-compulsiveness and impulsivity reflect related psychological dimensions in a non-clinical adolescent population. Out of 720 high-school students, 672 and 682 completed a questionnaire interview with a Chinese version of the Maudsley Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory (MOCI) and the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11), respectivel

Social and psychological resources and health outcomes after the World Trade Center disaster.

Previous studies on community disasters tend to assess non-representative samples and use nonstandard measures of well-being. Additionally, few of these studies are longitudinal in design. In this report, we examine the consequences of the World Trade Center Disaster (WTCD) within a stress model perspective to assess level of exposure to the disaster and well-being after this event, as measured by the SF12 mental health and physical health scales. Data come from a two-wave panel study of 1681 English or Spanish speaking adults living in New York City on the day of the terrorist attacks and wer

Intimate male partner violence impairs immune control over herpes simplex virus type 1 in physically and psychologically abused women.

OBJECTIVE: Intimate partner violence (IPV) against women is a worldwide problem and a cause of significant distress and threat to health. Studies have focused mainly on mental health, and few have considered the effect on physiological systems. The aim of this research was to determine whether IPV also compromises the immune system, as evidenced by a decrease in immune regulation over herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), the latent virus that causes cold sores. METHODS: Physically abused (N = 47) and psychologically abused women (N = 27) were compared with nonabused control women (N = 37). In

Vibrotactile Feedback Strategies for Trunk-Stabilizing Exercises in a Home-Based Scenario: Qualitative Interview Study Among Physiotherapists.

BACKGROUND: Physiotherapy treatments frequently incorporate a combination of hands-on, therapist-led exercises and hands-off, home-based exercises, whereby patients perform exercises independently. A key challenge in home-based rehabilitation is providing patients with effective feedback to guide their movements. A range of strategies is being reviewed to address this issue and a starting point for developing effective and implementable strategies to gather feedback requirements from the end users is also being considered. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to derive requirements for designing a vibr

Patient experiences of waiting for orthopaedic care and priorities for 'waiting well': a qualitative study in a London NHS trust.

BACKGROUND: Following the COVID- 19 pandemic, patients are facing larger waiting lists and longer waiting times than ever before. Long waits for orthopaedic treatment can negatively impact patients' quality of life due to pain, reduced mobility, and the psychological effects of waiting itself. Initial analysis at a London National Health Service (NHS) Trust showed that patients living in the most deprived areas were more likely to face longer waiting times for joint replacement surgery. This study aimed to understand what would support people to live well while waiting for orthopaedic treatmen

Children of alcoholic parents: health, growth, mental development and psychopathology until school age. Results from a prospective longitudinal study of children from the general population.

Of 640 women who paid their first visit to the two maternal welfare centres in a new Stockholm suburb during one prospective year, 532 (85%) were interviewed with regard to 41 stress factors forming a "life stress score" (LSS). The interviews were supplemented with data from hospital, social welfare and police records concerning the expectant mother and the father. The 532 mothers were divided into three groups according to the degree of psychosocial stress (group 1 (n = 194) without psychosocial stress; group 2 (n = 171) with severe psychosocial stress; and group 3 (n = 167) in an intermediat

Exploring the dynamics of adaptability in the translation of mental health education material: the perspectives from Chinese tertiary students studying in Australia.

INTRODUCTION: With technological advances, health communication studies have increasingly focused on multimodality. In contrast, as adaptation has been merged with cross-cultural translation, the dynamics of adaptability have been discussed primarily in theoretical research and other areas of translation, and only a few medical and health translation studies have emphasized this point. METHODS: Using the dynamic dimension in Verschueren's Adaptation Theory, the current study used a questionnaire survey and semi-structured interviews to explore the dynamics of adaptability in the Chinese trans

Basic Psychological Needs and Sustained Participation in Men's Sheds: Implications for Well-Being and Suicide Prevention.

Older men who endorse traditional masculine values such as stoicism and independence may be less likely to seek help when distressed, increasing vulnerability to social isolation and suicide. Men's Sheds, operating in 12 countries with around 3,000 sheds, offer practical activities, shared purpose, and informal social connection in settings that align with familiar masculine norms while providing support. Despite these benefits, many sheds struggle to maintain member engagement, and little is known about why some men remain involved over the long term while others disengage. This qualitative s

Experiences, effects, and coping strategies of domestic violence as a women's health issue among Saudi women: a qualitative study of psychosocial and cultural dimensions.

BACKGROUND: Domestic violence (DV) is a serious concern with wide-ranging psychosocial consequences, including impacts on mental health, physical well-being, and social relationships. While domestic abuse and DV are related and often used interchangeably, intimate partner violence (IPV) refers more specifically to abuse occurring between current or former intimate partners. The aim of the study is to explore how DV affects both women and their children and how women cope with abuse within the cultural and social setting. METHODS: A qualitative study was performed using in-depth, semi-structur
