OBJECTIVE: To explore incidence and prevalence rates of nutritional deficiency in adults in general practice.
METHODS: Six Dutch general practice research and registration networks supplied incidence and prevalence rates of nutritional deficiency by the International Classification of Primary Care (ICPC) or 'E-list' labels ('loss of appetite, feeding problem adult, iron, pernicious/folate deficiency anaemia, vitamin deficiencies and other nutritional disorders, weight loss'). In case of disease-related nutritional deficiency, we asked whether this was labelled separately ('co-registered') or

Twenty-three patients diagnosed as established fascioliasis were enrolled in the present study. Fasciolia cases were investigated for serum iron, copper and their carrier proteins together with haemoglobin and some blood indices. A significant reduction in serum iron was detected in the examined group. This reveals the occurrence of iron deficiency anaemia in patients with chronic fascioliasis.

BACKGROUND: Insufficient iron for erythropoiesis can occur in multiple conditions, including absolute iron deficiency, which is often caused by chronic external hemorrhage in dogs. Distinguishing this from other causes of iron-restricted erythropoiesis allows appropriate intervention. Decreased marrow iron assessed by Prussian blue staining is a method to diagnose absolute iron deficiency, but scoring systems for marrow iron are not validated in dogs.
OBJECTIVES: Our objectives were to (a) evaluate the technical performance of two bone marrow iron scoring systems used in human medicine and (b

BACKGROUND: We were interested in identifying possible nutritional reasons for growth faltering among breastfed infants in the rural farming community of San Mateo, Capulhuac, Mexico (2800 m above sea level).
OBJECTIVE: We examined the prevalence of inadequate iron and folate status among lactating Otomi women and determined to what extent their iron and folate nutriture influenced the milk concentrations of these nutrients.
DESIGN: Lactating women (n = 71) provided blood and milk samples and dietary information at a mean (+/- SD) of 22 +/- 13 d postpartum. Blood indexes included hemoglobin,

Iron deficiency may develop in hemodialysis patients, especially when erythropoietin is given. The role of iron deficiency in the anemia of predialysis chronic renal failure (CRF), however, is much less clear. We have intravenously (IV) administered iron as ferric saccharate in a total dose of 200 mg elemental iron monthly for 5 months to 33 CRF patients who remained anemic despite oral iron supplementation and who had no laboratory signs of iron overload. None was receiving erythropoietin therapy. In 22 of the patients there was an increase in the hematocrit values by the end of the study. Th

Nutrition and food items may improve or worsen symptoms in Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Protein malnutrition and vitamin and mineral deficiencies are common, particularly deficiency of iron and vitamin D. Dietary fibres and omega-3 fatty acids are safe, but no evidence supports their use as treatment. The use of probiotics is not encouraged in patients with Crohn's disease, but it may maintain remission in ulcerative colitis. Curcumin, chamomile, and other herbal extracts are promising in the treatment of mild ulcerative colitis, but validation of products and monitoring of side eff

Epidemiological surveys of the pattern of nutrition in the Chuvash Republic were conducted by the Department of Consumer Supervision of the Chuvash Republic to reveal the regional features of the levels of nutrients in a diet. To accomplish this goal, the authors developed an algorithm for studying the organized and unorganized collectives. A regional dietary trace element database was set up and the endemic problems of an area were specified. Significant dietary selenium deficiency and moderate iron and manganese deficiencies were cardinal problems in the population's nutrition in the Chuvash

Essential trace elements such as zinc, iron, and copper participate in various enzyme reactions directly related to the regulation of blood pressure and indirectly related to generation of oxidative metabolic energy, alterations in blood lipid levels, and alterations in taste acuity. The toxicological action of several heavy metal ions including cadmium, lead, mercury, and thallium can cause hypertension by affecting hormone metabolism, vasoconstriction, and renal tubular function. We conclude, however, that neither deficiencies of essential elements nor the presence of toxic heavy metals are

Anaemia is a frequent consequence of many gastrointestinal (GI) diseases in children and it can even be the initial presenting symptom of underlying chronic GI disease. The definition of anaemia is age and gender-dependent and it can be classified based on pathophysiology, red cell morphology, and clinical presentation. Although nutritional deficiencies, including GI malabsorption of nutrients and GI bleeding, play a major role, other pathophysiologic mechanisms seen in chronic GI diseases, whether inflammatory (e.g., inflammatory bowel disease) or not (e.g., coeliac disease and dysmotility),

Porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT) is a vesiculobullous skin disorder characterized by a defect in heme biosynthesis. Reduced activity of the hepatic enzyme uroporphyrinogen decarboxylase (URO-D) results in accumulation of photosensitive porphyrins; this ultimately leads to the skin fragility and blistering that is characteristic of this disease. The majority of cases of PCT are associated with acquired deficiencies of the enzyme URO-D, secondary to hepatic injury precipitated by medications or infections. Less commonly, PCT has been documented in patients with end-stage renal disease. The pathogen

BACKGROUND: Bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) are blood-sucking insects widely distributed in temperate regions. While they are not known to be vectors of infectious diseases, their bites often cause dermatological symptoms, such as pruritus and rash. Rarely, chronic infestations may lead to systemic complications, including iron deficiency anaemia. Only a few case reports, most involving individuals with reduced activities of daily living (ADL) or social isolation, have described this association.
CASE REPORT: We report herein the case of an 82-year-old woman in whom a chronic bed bug infestation

Iron deficiency disproportionately affects young adult females and may impair cognitive performance. While supplementation has been studied, dietary interventions using iron-rich whole foods, particularly beef, remain underexplored. Beef provides highly bioavailable heme iron along with vitamin B12, zinc, choline, and creatine, nutrients implicated in neurotransmission, myelination, and cortical function. This review synthesizes evidence on beef consumption, iron status, and cognition that demonstrate improvements in attention, memory, and visuospatial processing in young adult females. We exa

Histoplasma capsulatum is a dimorphic fungal pathogen that survives and replicates within macrophages (Mphi). To identify specific genes required for intracellular survival, we utilized Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated mutagenesis, and screened for H. capsulatum insertional mutants that were unable to survive in human Mphi. One colony was identified that had an insertion within VMA1, the catalytic subunit A of the vacuolar ATPase (V-ATPase). The vma1 mutant (vma1::HPH) grew normally on iron-replete medium, but not on iron-deficient media. On iron-deficient medium, the growth of the vma1 muta

Iron is indispensable to human physiology, yet its terminology remains fragmented across clinical, laboratory, and chemical fields. With recent updates from several clinical guidelines, a unified framework for iron nomenclature has emerged. This editorial advocates for harmonization, replacing outdated and inconsistent terms such as functional iron deficiency and ferrous/ferric with standardized equivalents like iron-restricted erythropoiesis and iron(II)/iron(III). Consistent terminology is not a matter of semantics but of precision, ensuring clarity in communication, comparability across stu

Breast-fed infants were compared with infants fed a prepared formula not fortified with iron during the first nine months of life. Despite efforts to provide equal iron intakes from cereal and other foods, the breast-fed infants ate less iron-containing foods than the formula-fed infants. The incidence of mild anemia and biochemical iron deficiency was the same in both groups. The breast-fed infants had a significantly lower total iron binding capacity. Breast-fed infants appear to utilize iron more efficiently than formula-fed infants.

Objectives: This study utilized IPEC-J2, a neonatal pig jejunum-derived cell line, to assess how iron deficiency (ID) and excess (IE) alter enterocyte metabolism and the transcription of inflammatory markers. Methods: Cells were treated with deferiprone (DFP) or ferric ammonium citrate (FAC) to induce ID or IE, respectively. The study evaluated: (1) transcriptional changes in iron-regulatory genes over 96 h under ID or IE; (2) the interaction between iron imbalance and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) exposure on mRNA expression of inflammation markers and iron transporters; and (3) cellular metabolic

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVE: In Asia, 42% of young children suffer from iron deficiency anemia. Children have an increased requirement for iron intake because of growth and physical activity. Education plays an important role in anemia prevention and in ensuring children are aware of appropriate iron intake and the iron content of different foods. As a tool for this purpose, we adapted the adult version of the Revised Iron Intake Scale (RIIS) to create the Child and Adolescent Version of the Iron Intake Scale (CIIS), using illustrations to help children recognize the foods listed in the CIIS. We ai

Postmenopausal osteoporosis is characterized by an imbalance of bone resorption exceeding bone formation, resulting in a net loss of bone mineral density (BMD). Estrogen deficiency is known to promote bone resorption. However, the causative factors that impair bone formation have not been identified. Women after menopause experience not only estrogen deficiency but also iron accumulation as a result of cessation of menstruation. In this study we investigated whether increased iron plays a role in osteoporosis. By growing primary mouse osteoclast and osteoblast progenitor cells as well as immor

BACKGROUND: The Gram-negative bacterium Yersinia pestis is the causative agent of the bubonic plague. Efficient iron acquisition systems are critical to the ability of Y. pestis to infect, spread and grow in mammalian hosts, because iron is sequestered and is considered part of the innate host immune defence against invading pathogens. We used a proteomic approach to determine expression changes of iron uptake systems and intracellular consequences of iron deficiency in the Y. pestis strain KIM6+ at two physiologically relevant temperatures (26 degrees C and 37 degrees C).
RESULTS: Differenti

Iron deficiency is one of the main causes of anemia in the world, especially in children and women, so food fortification through microencapsulation is a viable alternative to combat this deficiency. The present work aimed to encapsulate iron in a water-in-oil-in-water double emulsion (W1/O/W2), which was formed with whey protein isolate and polyglycerol polyricinoleate as the emulsifying agents, tara gum as a thickening agent, and sucrose as an osmotic active substance. The double emulsion formed with 12% whey protein isolate, 0.8% tara gum, and 2% sucrose presented high encapsulation efficie
