OBJECTIVE: Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is associated with a high mortality. The present study sought to determine the incidence of spontaneous ICH in an intensive care unit (ICU) and associated factors.
DESIGN: A 6 year retrospective study.
SETTING: A general ICU in a university hospital.
PATIENTS: All ICU patients developing ICH were included in the study. All trauma and neurosurgical patients were excluded, as well as patients who were admitted to the ICU because of ICH.
MEASUREMENTS AND RESULTS: During the study period 3032 patients were hospitalized in the ICU, and 834 were excluded

OBJECTIVE: To assess the long-term results of the Stamey vesicourethral suspension for stress urinary incontinence.
METHODS: A total of 72 case records of women who underwent the Stamey procedure in the years 1985-1991 was reviewed. Every patient had a full preoperative evaluation including filling cystometry, urethral pressure profilometry and imaging of the kidneys and bladder. In this study, 116 neonates (58M, 58F), aged 12h to 14d, with heart murmurs were examined by echocardiography: 26 were preterm and 90 full-term neonates. The clinical diagnosis was classified into definite heart disease, possible heart disease and innocent murmur. The final diagnosis was based on echocardiography and, in some cases, cardiac catheterization or surgery. A 13-year-old patient developed complete mutism and buccofacial apraxia following toxic vasculitis due to a yellow scorpion sting. Language functions were preserved. A CT scan disclosed mainly biopercular infarcts. During a period of 2 weeks Campylobacter jejuni infection was diagnosed in seven infants in a neonatal intensive care unit. An identical serotype of Camp. jejuni was found in five of the cases. Investigations suggested that a common source of infection or infection acquired from mothers during delivery were unlikely. The dates of onset and the common serotype indicate that the outbreak may have been caused by person-to-person spread.

Between 1979 and 1981, 22 children with osteomyelitis and/or septic arthritis were hospitalized at Soroka University Hospital. Streptococcus pneumoniae was cultured in five of the children, four of whom were under 2 years of age. In four other children under 2 years of age, Haemophilus influenzae was cultured. Staphylococcus aureus was identified less frequently in the younger age group. In deciding on initial antibiotic therapy, the possibility of such a bacteriological spectrum should be considered.

Eighty-two cases of active tuberculosis (TB) were diagnosed only at autopsy in patients hospitalized in the Chaim Sheba Medical Center during a 21-year period (1960 to 1980). Some 75 percent of the patients were over 50 years old and a large number of them suffered from accompanying diseases or drug therapy which suppresses the immune system. In a survey of nine major Israeli hospitals, 29 patients diagnosed between 1955 and 1975 as suffering from hepatic vein thrombosis were identified. The geographical correlation between the incidence of spina bifida and anencephaly and the HLA and ABO antigen frequencies are studied. There is a positive correlation between these malformations and A1 and B8, and a negative correlation with B5 and Bw35. The role of the HLA system itself, or of a human T-like locus, is discussed.
