Navigating the complex landscape of childhood dementia: caregiver psychological well-being, grief, and health system challenges.

OBJECTIVE: This study used the Supportive Care Needs Framework (SCNF) to examine the psychological well-being of caregivers of children with dementia and their experiences navigating health and disability systems, including financial hardship. METHODS: Caregivers and bereaved caregivers, whose child died from a dementia, completed an online questionnaire and semi-structured interview. We adopted a convergent, mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative results to enhance the interpretation of caregivers' experiences and priorities. RESULTS: Seventy-six caregivers completed

Experiences of discrimination and positive treatment among people who support a person with a mental health condition: a nationally representative survey.

PURPOSE: Stigma and discrimination compound the burden experienced by informal caregivers of people with mental illness, impacting their wellbeing. Prior caregiver stigma research has relied on qualitative or convenience samples, limiting knowledge of groups most affected. This Australian study is the first nationally representative survey of caregiver experiences of discrimination and positive treatment. METHODS: Participants (N = 2,164) were recruited from a probability-based online panel using stratified random sampling and weighting for age, gender, education, and language background. Des

Associations between anger reductions and functional improvements among veterans in brief cognitive-behavioral conjoint therapy for PTSD.

Anger is a significant problem for military veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Interventions designed to treat PTSD have been shown to decrease anger, which may be associated with improvements in psychosocial functioning. Couple-based PTSD treatments, which target both PTSD and relationship functioning, may be particularly useful for improving anger and associated psychosocial functioning. Thus, the current study sought to examine whether decreases in veterans' and partners' anger following participation in a brief couple-based treatment for PTSD (brief Cognitive Behavioral Co

Intimate Partner Violence and Mental Well-Being Among Married Women Attending Psychiatric Outpatient Clinics: The Roles of Childhood Trauma and Self-Compassion.

Background/Objectives: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a public health problem associated with adverse mental health outcomes among women. Although prior research has focused on psychological distress (PD), mental well-being (MWB) is a distinct dimension of mental health that has received less attention in IPV research, particularly in clinical samples. Childhood trauma (CT) and self-compassion (SC) may contribute to variability in IPV-related outcomes. This study examined associations between IPV and MWB, considering SC, PD, and CT within an integrated framework. Methods: In this cross-sec

War comes home: Conflict exposure and intimate partner violence in Ethiopia.

Armed conflict can increase risks of violence within households, including intimate partner violence (IPV), that is, physical, sexual, or psychological harm inflicted by a current or former partner. Existing evidence links conflict exposure to IPV, but little is known about how IPV risk scales with the intensity of nearby violence, whether conflict exacerbates pre-existing IPV, contributes to new IPV, or both, and the household-level mechanisms that may underlie these associations. We examine these questions in Ethiopia, a country affected by recent large-scale conflict. We link geolocated con

Fatigue in COPD: a Longitudinal, Multidimensional Perspective.

BACKGROUND: Fatigue is a pervasive, debilitating symptom of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) that significantly impacts patients' overall health and quality of life. However, its underlying mechanisms and associations with physical, psychological, behavioral, and other health factors remain unclear. This study investigated longitudinal associations between fatigue and these factors in COPD. METHOD: A total of 247 COPD patients (mean age, 67.3 ± 8.1 years; 60% male; mean forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) 57 ± 21% predicted) from primary and secondary care were enrolled in a lo

Cardiac Rehabilitation for Angina with Non-Obstructive Coronary Arteries: A Scoping Review.

AIMS: Angina with non-obstructive coronary arteries (ANOCA) is associated with impaired quality of life, and cardiac rehabilitation (CR) may be a promising non-pharmacological treatment option. This scoping review aimed to map how cardiac rehabilitation (CR) for patients with ANOCA is described in the literature, including program components, delivery characteristics, reported outcomes, and research gaps. METHODS AND RESULTS: A scoping review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. A comprehensive search of seven electronic databases was performed from inception to Septemb

Mental health predictors of treatment engagement and completion in substance use disorder treatment: Within- and between-person evidence from a 15-year Western Australian cohort.

INTRODUCTION: Treatment retention remains a major barrier in substance-use disorder (SUD) treatment. Most prior studies focus on single episodes and between-person differences, leaving uncertain how within-person fluctuations in symptom severity and risk indicators affect engagement and completion across repeated episodes. We examined whether baseline and within-episode changes in substance-use severity, psychological distress, and clinical risk profiles predict treatment attendance, duration, and completion across multiple treatment episodes. METHODS: Using a retrospective cohort design, we

The indirect effect of perfectionism between anxiety, self-esteem, aesthetic pressure, and eating disorder risk in competitive figure skaters.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders are highly prevalent in aesthetic sports, where body weight and physical appearance are central to performance. In figure skating, aesthetic pressure from the competition uniform, along with psychological factors such as perfectionism, anxiety, and self-esteem, may increase the risk of eating disorder. This study examined the relationships between these variables and eating disorder risk among competitive figure skaters, and tested whether self-esteem, aesthetic pressure, and anxiety were indirectly associated with eating disorder risk through perfectionism. A Neurotensin Brake on Exploratory Drive under Persistent Threat.

Avoidance behavior is an adaptive response that delays exploration to promote survival. Avoidance is enhanced by psychological stress and is a hallmark of many neuropsychiatric disorders. Neural circuits that control avoidance by integrating stressful stimuli and modulating exploratory behavior remain underexplored. Elucidating the functional dynamics of this highly conserved phenomenon and the underlying neural mechanism of avoidance is an important open-ended question, with relevance to understanding both innate behaviors and neuropsychiatric disorders. Using predator odor as an innate, chro

Silent grief: A qualitative study on the emotional and social impact of early gestational loss.

BACKGROUND: Early gestational loss is a common event, yet its emotional and social impact is often underestimated. From the earliest weeks of pregnancy, many women develop a psychological bond with the baby and an emerging maternal identity. When miscarriage occurs, the loss is often perceived as the death of a child rather than a minor clinical episode, resulting in disenfranchised grief. AIM: To understand the emotional and social experiences of women following early gestational loss. METHODS: An interpretative phenomenological qualitative design was employed with a purposive sample of 17

Psychological pathways linking discrimination to alcohol and marijuana use among LGB young adults during the 2024 presidential election.

During the 2024 US presidential election, a surge in anti-lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) rhetoric contributed to a hostile political climate that intensified the psychological impact of discrimination among LGB young adults. Drawing from minority stress theory and the psychological mediation framework (PMF), exposure to LGBT discrimination may be linked to greater substance use through intrapersonal (sexual orientation rumination and hopelessness) and interpersonal (interpersonal political tension) processes. However, little is known about these indirect pathways and whether they vary as a f

Chronic adrenocortical activity and onset of Takotsubo syndrome.

AIMS: To study whether chronic physiological stress may play a role in the onset of Takotsubo syndrome (TS) and whether it is associated with worse psychological distress in patients recovering from a recent TS episode. METHODS AND RESULTS: We compared hair cortisol concentration (HCC), a validated biomarker of chronic stress, between a group of patients recently admitted with a new diagnosis of TS (Mayo criteria) and a cohort of clinically stable historical controls. HCC, demographics, perceived stress, depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms, and trigger history were as

Biopsychosocial predictors of functional recovery in chronic low back pain following physiotherapy: A survival analysis study.

BACKGROUND: Functional recovery following physiotherapy in individuals with chronic low back pain varies considerably and may be influenced by biological, psychological, behavioral, and social characteristics. Few studies have examined the timing of functional recovery using survival analysis in routine physiotherapy practice. METHODS: This prospective observational cohort study included 250 adults with chronic nonspecific low back pain receiving individualized physiotherapy over a median of eight sessions during four weeks. Baseline biopsychosocial characteristics were assessed using the Num

Impact of physical activities, sedentarism, and sleep on depression and psychological distress-prospective findings of the Canadian longitudinal study on aging.

BACKGROUND: The interrelation of physical activity, sedentarism, and sleep concerning the onset and persistence of depression is underexplored. This study examines the joint effect of time spent in these activities on clinically relevant depressive symptoms (CRDS). It also examines the influence of history of depressive disorder and whether results extend to serious psychological distress (SPD). METHODS: Longitudinal data from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging, including 25,665 middle-aged and older (45-85 years) people, were used. Self-reported questionnaires were used for time spent

Examining the effects of school-vacation transitions on depression and anxiety in adolescents: network analysis.

BACKGROUND: The school-vacation cycle may have impacts on the psychological states of adolescents. However, little evidence illustrates how transition from school to vacation impacts students' psychological states (e.g. depression and anxiety). AIMS: To explore the changing patterns of depression and anxiety symptoms among adolescent students within a school-vacation transition and to provide insights for prevention or intervention targets. METHOD: Social demographic data and depression and anxiety symptoms were measured from 1380 adolescent students during the school year (age: 13.8 ± 0.88)

Violence and suicidal ideation in Brazilian women: The impact of perpetrator type and the moderating role of depression.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Suicidal ideation (SI) is a critical public health issue and a strong predictor of suicidal behavior. While the association between violence and SI is well documented, few studies have distinguished between the effects of intimate partner violence (IPV) and violence perpetrated by others. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of SI among Brazilian women and examine whether the association between SI and violence differs by perpetrator type, and whether depression moderates these associations. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using data from 46,866 adult wo
