Pure agraphia is reported following haematoma in the left centrum semiovale sparing both parietal and frontal cortices. There was total inability to produce graphemes in the absence of limb apraxia. The lesion is assumed to have prevented linguistic and graphemic systems from gaining access to the frontal motor programme.

To determine the sources and targets of auditory pathways that bypass the inferior colliculus in the mustache bat, we injected WGA-HRP in the medial geniculate body and related auditory nuclei of the thalamus as well as in the lower brainstem. We used electrophysiological methods to verify that the injection electrode was in an area responsive to sound. The only thalamic injections that produced retrograde transport to cells in auditory nuclei caudal to the inferior colliculus were those that included the suprageniculate nucleus. These injections labeled a group of large multipolar cells lying

Immunohistochemical and axonal transport techniques were used to characterize the origin and distribution of galanin-immunoreactive inputs to the paraventricular (PVH) and supraoptic (SO) nuclei of the hypothalamus in the rat. In the parvicellular division of the PVH, the most prominent inputs were confined to the anterior and periventricular parts of the nucleus rostrally and the dorsal and ventral medial subdivisions caudally; the galaninergic inputs to the magnocellular division of PVH and SO were very sparse and were preferentially distributed to regions containing predominantly oxytociner

A 4-year-old girl with multiple system degeneration and retinal degeneration was presented. There was onset of an ataxic gait at two years and rapid progression of retinal degeneration, myoclonus and cranial nerve palsy. Neuropathological examination revealed severe degeneration of the cerebellar cortex and the pathways of auditory and deep sensation, as well as degeneration of the cerebellar efferent fibers, the striatonigral system, the cerebellar afferent fiber system and lower motor neurons. Cases of young children with spinocerebellar degeneration have been reported in several families of

Among the various deficiencies in neurotransmitters and neuropeptides in the brains of patients with Parkinson's disease, the loss of dopamine (DA) is implicated in a major way in the occurrence of L-dopa-induced abnormal involuntary movements (AIMs). Whatever the clinical pattern, they are triggered by drugs which stimulate DA transmission and can be modified by DA agonists and antagonists. They occur when DOPA plasma concentrations, and thus central DA receptor stimulation, reach a critical level. They are observed in patients with severely damaged central DA neurons, but involvement of othe

A double labeling technique employing retrograde labeling of vagal neurons with horseradish peroxidase from injections into the stomach wall and immunocytochemistry for dopamine-beta-hydroxylase revealed catecholaminergic neurons in the medulla oblongata which project into the abdomen. The great majority of such neurons were located in the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus, particularly in its rostral third.

The purpose of this study was to determine the mechanism by which the feline pylorus contracts in response to duodenal acidification. Simult … -associated, high-amplitude phasic contractions in response to duodenal acidification involve local neural pathways that may be mediated through an opioid peptide. The pyloric response to duodenal acidification is distinguished from that of the duodenum, which is cholinergic.

1. Inspiratory output responses, measured as integrated phrenic activity, to hypercapnia, to carotid sinus nerve stimulation, to unilateral and bilateral stimulation of calf muscles and to combinations of these stimuli were determined in paralysed, vagotomized and glomectomized cats whose end-tidal PCO2 was kept constant by means of a servo-controlled ventilator. 2. Confirming an earlier report (Eldridge, Gill-Kumar & Millhorn, 1981), the inspiratory response to progressive hypercapnic stimulation of the central chemoreceptors was not linear, and the responses to a constant carotid sinus nerve

The coexistence of two neuronally-localised peptides, substance P and thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH), in descending serotoninergic nerve fibres to the spinal cord was investigated using immunocytochemical and biochemical methods. Substance P-like material in the spinal cord was shown to be identical to the undecapeptide substance P by the criteria of gel filtration, high performance liquid chromatography and behaviour in substance P specific radioimmunoassays. Immunocytochemical staining for 5-hydroxytryptamine, substance P, and TRH showed that all three substances had a similar distribut

Man has always been intrigued with the localization of function within the brain but has paid insufficient attention to the long and the short association fiber pathways which, when stimulated, may fire distant areas evoking unusual responses. Three cases of intracerebral lesions are presented to demonstrate the significance of these structures. The vestibular symptoms of dizziness may occur from excitation of the temporal operculum. If, added to this symptom, the patient has spatial disorientation, such as feeling upside down, it suggests that the region of the supramarginal gyrus and the ang

Electrolytic lesions were carried out in the medial hypothalamus of adult rats to study remodelling responses in a central noradrenergic pathway, the medial forebrain bundle. Four days, two weeks, 4 weeks and 8 weeks post-lesion, the animals were perfused and processed for correlated fluorescence microscopic (FM) and electron microscopic (EM) study. FM evaluation 4 days post-lesion showed that, compared with control preparations, catecholaminergic fibers became thick, distorted and intensely fluorescent. With increasing survival times the caliber of these fibers became finer and fluorescence i

Stimulation of the zona compacta of the substantia nigra (SNC) has been reported to impair the long-term retention of a passive avoidance step-down task. In the present experiments it was observed that previous ipsilateral lesions of the dopaminergic nigro-neostriatal bundle (NSB) with 6-hydroxydopamine blocked the stimulation-induced memory deficit. Unilateral or bilateral lesions of the dopaminergic NSB did not by themselves disrupt acquisition or retention of the passive avoidance task. In addition, the memory deficit observed after electrical stimulation of the caudate-putamen was not redu

Sonic hedgehog (Shh) signaling influences neurogenesis and neural patterning during the development of central nervous system. Dysregulation of Shh signaling in brain leads to neurological disorders like autism spectrum disorder, depression, dementia, stroke, Parkinson's diseases, Huntington's disease, locomotor deficit, epilepsy, demyelinating disease, neuropathies as well as brain tumors. The synthesis, processing and transport of Shh ligand as well as the localization of its receptors and signal transduction in the central nervous system has been carefully reviewed. Further, we summarize th

The eosinophil-mast cell-neural pathway may be important in the pathophysiology of functional gastrointestinal disorders characterized by unexplained abdominal pain, disordered defecation, or meal-related discomfort. There is evidence that duodenal eosinophils are increased in functional dyspepsia, whereas mast cells are increased in the lower gut in irritable bowel syndrome, directly supporting a role for a hypersensitivity-type reaction in these disorders. The trigger may be a pathogen, food, or other allergen in the gut mucosa. This trigger may evoke eosinophils, mast cells, and other compo

Neurovascular development is a tightly regulated, highly coordinated process essential for the concurrent growth and patterning of the central nervous system and its vascular network during embryogenesis and early postnatal life. This intricate process relies on dynamic cellular crosstalk that guides the invasion of blood vessels into developing neural tissues, culminating in the establishment of the blood-brain barrier and the regulation of cerebral blood flow. Among the key signaling cascades orchestrating neurovascular development, the Notch and Mitogenactivated Protein Kinase pathways emer

AIMS: Functional motor neurons derived from stem cells can be used for in vitro modeling or future preclinical applications of neuronal disorders. When the stem cells are regulated by miRNAs, they target many signaling pathways, including PI3K/Akt/mTOR cascade. The level of protein expression of PI3K/Akt/mTOR, PTEN and GSK3ß pathways are evaluated in the motor neuron-like cells (MNLC).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The neural stem cells (NSC) were transdifferentiated from adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADMSC) and transduced with miRNA-218 lentiviral vector, generating MNLC. ADMSC, NSC, and

Ethanol exposure during neural development leads to substantial neuronal loss in multiple brain regions. Our previous research indicated that exogenous glial-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) attenuated ethanol-induced cerebellar Purkinje cell loss. Additionally, ethanol decreased GDNF release suggesting that ethanol disrupts GDNF-signaling pathways. The present experiments utilized a homogeneous GDNF-responsive neuroblastoma cell line (SK-N-SH) to test the hypothesis that exogenous GDNF could attenuate ethanol-induced cell loss by suppressing cytotoxic signaling pathways and cell suicide. We
