Spontaneous and radiation-induced renal tumors in the Eker rat model of dominantly inherited cancer.

Hereditary renal carcinoma (RC) in the rat, originally reported by R. Eker in 1954, is an example of a Mendelian dominant predisposition to a specific cancer in an experimental animal. At the histologic level, RCs develop through multiple stages from early preneoplastic lesions (e.g., atypical tubules) to adenomas in virtually all heterozygotes by the age of 1 year. The homozygous mutant condition is lethal at approximately 10 days of fetal life. Ionizing radiation induces additional tumors in a linear dose-response relationship, suggesting that in heterozygotes two events (one inherited, one

[Glanzmann's thrombasthenia: a rare example of an integrin deficit].

Glanzmann's thrombasthenia is an autosomal recessive life-long bleeding disorder, originated from a quantitative or qualitative defect of the major platelet membrane receptor: the GPIIb/IIIa complex. The GPIIb/IIIa complex is a calcium-dependent heterodimer, belonging to the integrin superfamily. The complex of activated platelets can bind fibrinogen, von Willebrand factor, fibronectin and vitronectin, which are proteins playing an important role in platelet adhesion and aggregation. Thrombasthenic platelets are deficient in GPIIb, GPIIIa and GPIIb/IIIa complex; however, platelets from few thr

[Study of the fine structure of human deciduous dentin with dentinogenesis imperfecta, with special reference to the mantle dentin].

A lower deciduous incioer exhibiting dentinogenesis imperfecta (D.I) obtained from a 6-year-old boy with osteogenesis imperfecta (Shields' Type I) was examined by means of light microscopy (LM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray microanalysis (XMA). With LM, the dentin displayed a sparse and irregular tubular pattern near the dentino-enamel junction (DEJ) and only few or no tubular structures in the area corresponding to the circumpulpal dentin. Between these two areas, cleft-like structures were characteristically noted. Structural irregularities in the dentinal tubules were also

Ventricular shapes, distortions, and deformities: mirrors of past cerebral insults. A study based on early sonographic follow-up studies.

Ventricular distortions and deformities often represent the endpoint of neuropathologic reactions that evolve early in life. Once fully developed, they may offer no clues as to preceding etiologic agents or pathogenesis. Serial sonography in the neonatal period of 14 patients with periventricular leukomalacia provided documentation of the evolution of certain ventricular patterns. When recognized early, these ventricular changes have prognostic significance because periventricular leukomalacia can produce serious neurologic sequelae. If found later in childhood, periventricular leukomalacia ca

Hemangiopericytoma-like intranasal tumors. A clinicopathologic study of 23 cases.

The clinical, microscopic, and gross pathologic features of 23 cases of intranasal hemangiopericytoma-like tumors are reviewed and studied. When in the nasal cavity, these lesions often originated in a paranasal sinus and extended into the nasal cavity secondarily. They occurred most commonly in adults in the sixth and seventh decades of life; there was no significant sex predilection. Twenty-two of the 23 patients were Caucasian. These patients most commonly had symptoms of nasal obstruction and epistaxis. Clinically the lesions were generally thought to represent allergic polyps. Although ap

Ethical review key considerations for organoid applications in biomedical research-a systematic review.

The organoid co-culture model, a novel tool for reconstructing three-dimensional microenvironments to study cell-cell interactions, has demonstrated significant potential in biomedical research in recent years. It holds considerable value for elucidating tumor immunosuppression mechanisms, conducting drug sensitivity tests, studying immune responses in infectious diseases, and revealing pathological features of neurodegenerative diseases. However, this model still faces challenges related to standardization, large-scale cultivation, and ethical regulation. The cellular sources of organoids-suc

Performing Endometriosis as placental dramaturgy.

Performing Endometriosis is an autopathographic piece, written and performed by VR and directed by MM (coauthors of the present article). Divided into very short scenes (called Glimpses), Performing Endometriosis is a solo work about VR's lived experience of stage 4 endometriosis, where audiences are invited to encounter some key moments in her chronic illness journey. Most often experienced by women, endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus appears elsewhere in the body, becoming entrapped and finding no bodily exit. One of the uterus' healthy functions (if pregnan

Printable carbon nanotube superplastics for thermal management.

While plastics are integral to modern life, their limitations in mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties hinder their use in advanced applications, particularly thermal management. We have developed a scalable in-situ nanotube-polymer fusion and hot-working process for mass-producing carbon nanotube superplastics (CNTSPs) designed to overcome these limitations. By integrating up to 59 wt% CNTs and inducing spontaneous fusion with polymer molecules while retaining the original long CNT length, we achieve enhanced CNT alignment and packing density. This unique structure yields CNTSPs with

Unveiling active microbial processes in Earth's deepest seawater.

Microorganisms dominate life in the hadal zone, yet extreme sampling difficulty and low biomass have precluded characterization of their in situ activities. Here, we analyze microbiome samples collected from hadal seawaters via in situ filtration during 12 human-occupied vehicle dives. DNA-protein co-extraction and metagenome-guided metaproteomic analysis identify 135,073 non-redundant active proteins, with over 95% being hadal-specific. Metaproteomic quantification distinguishes highly active and less active taxa that differ in biogeographic origins and genomic traits. Hadal microorganisms op

Redescription of Agrilus zanthoxylumi Hou & Feng, 1989 (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) based on newly designated neotype.

Prickly ash borer (PAB) Agrilus zanthoxylumi was first identified but undescribed by Mr. Tao-qian Hou, Zoological Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences, in the 1980s. This specific name first appeared in the book Cultivation and pest control of Sichuan pepper by Li et al. (1989a) as A. zanthoxylumi Hou & Feng. We have made various efforts to find the original named specimens, but both Hou's and Li's specimens of this species were lost. This insect causes significant damage in prickly ash orchards across northwestern and southwestern China, becoming one of the important economic pests in the p

A pre-synthetic conjugation methodology of DNA and RNA: combining on-column conjugation and tandem oligonucleotide synthesis.

Amino modifiers are valuable chemical tools for nucleic acid bioconjugation applications and for probing potential mechanisms relevant to the origins of life. Herein, we describe a streamlined and cost-effective strategy for the incorporating amine functionalities at the 3'-end of DNA/RNA constructs through a commercially available diethyl 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)malonate-derived controlled pore glass (a so-called version of chemical phosphorylation reagent II CPG, or CPR II CPG). This platform mitigates certain limitations associated with previously explored sulfonyl-based supports, thereby imp

Upper limb human movement assistance devices for people with disabilities : A systematic review.

Upper limb (UL) motor impairments, common in people with disabilities, compromise independence in activities of daily living (ADLs). Assistive devices represent promising solutions for restoring or supporting these functions. However, they remain largely underutilized and underdeveloped. This systematic review provides an overview of technologies aimed at improving UL functional mobility in people with motor deficits. The search was conducted according to PRISMA guidelines, with rigorous study selection. Inclusion criteria included, among other things: original English studies on UL assistive

Wilson's disease: does a neuropsychiatric phenotype without liver involvement truly exist?

INTRODUCTION: Wilson’s disease (WD) is an inherited disorder of copper metabolism resulting in pathological copper accumulation in multiple organs, predominantly the liver, kidneys, and brain, with subsequent organ damage due to copper toxicity. Although the underlying metabolic defect originates in impaired hepatic copper transport with early hepatocellular injury, the currently accepted clinical phenotypic classification of WD distinguishes two major forms based on presenting symptoms: (1) hepatic and (2) neuropsychiatric, including cases without clinically overt liver disease. The aim of th

Targeting the Metabolic-Inflammatory Axis in Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis: Evidence From Diet, Glucagon-like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists, and Patient Perspectives.

Patients with psoriasis (PsO) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) frequently present with obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and metabolic syndrome, all of which worsen outcomes and reduce treatment response. Dietary interventions represent one strategy to address this interplay, targeting the microbiome, metabolome, and joint inflammation. Antiinflammatory and hypocaloric diets improve symptoms and metabolic profiles. In parallel, glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs), originally approved for T2DM and obesity, have emerged as promising agents with both metabolic and immunomodu

Hepatobiliary organoid research: the progress and applications.

Organoid culture has emerged as a forefront technology in the life sciences field. As "in vitro micro-organs", organoids can faithfully recapitulate the organogenesis process, and conserve the key structure, physiological function and pathological state of the original tissue or organ. Consequently, it is widely used in basic and clinical studies, becoming important preclinical models for studying diseases and developing therapies. Here, we introduced the definition and advantages of organoids and described the development and advances in hepatobiliary organoids research. We focus on applying

Recipient Aortic Dissection After Orthotopic Heart Transplant: A Case Report.

Aortic dissection following orthotopic heart transplant is a rare but life-threatening event and typically occurs at the donor-recipient aortic anastomosis. In the case described here, a 40-year-old male patient, 10 years after he had received a heart transplant to treat dilated cardiomyopathy, presented with chest pain and dyspnea. Imaging revealed a chronic dissection that originated from the suture line between the donor and recipient aortas and extended to the iliac arteries. Notably, a mismatch was observed between the donor and recipient aortas during the initial transplant surgery. Alth

PrimeNet: rational design of Prime editing pegRNAs by deep learning.

The rapid development of gene editing technology has revolutionized life science research and biotechnology applications. Prime editing, a precise gene editing tool, has shown promise in various applications, including disease research and therapeutic interventions. However, its suboptimal editing efficiency for extensive fragments and lack of predictive models have hindered its widespread adoption. Existing models exhibit low prediction accuracy and limitations, such as neglecting epigenetic factors that impact gene editing effects. To address these challenges, we developed PrimeNet, a novel

The Ex-utero intrapartum treatment procedure: a narrative review.

The "Ex Utero Intrapartum Treatment" (EXIT) procedure is a specialized surgical technique used during cesarean delivery to perform life-saving fetal interventions while maintaining placental circulation. By preserving feto-placental gas exchange, EXIT enables the treatment of severe conditions such as predictable severe breathing difficulties at birth. EXIT's origins date back to removing tracheal occlusion devices used for congenital diaphragmatic hernias. It has since expanded to treat conditions such as congenital high airway obstruction syndrome and airway compression by masses. Despite th
