Child maltreatment in the "children of the nineties" a longitudinal study of parental risk factors.

OBJECTIVE: To identify and validate factors within the parental background affecting risk of child maltreatment. METHOD: A nested case-control study based on the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children ("Children of the Nineties"), a cohort of children born in Avon in 1991 through 1992. Data on the childhood and psychiatric histories of the parents, along with other data on the social and family environments, have been collected through postal questionnaires from early antenatal booking onwards. RESULTS: Out of 14,138 participating children, 162 have been identified as having been ma

Antisocial tendency among drug-addicted adults: potential long-term effects of parental absence, support, and conflict during childhood.

This study examined the relationship between perceptions of parent-child relations in the family of origin and antisocial tendency in a sample of drug-addicted adults. Data included retrospective accounts of childhood family factors, adolescent antisocial tendency, and self-reported hostility and risk-taking prior to treatment entry. A developmental model was tested that included adolescent antisocial tendency as a mediator of the relationship between childhood parenting factors and adulthood antisocial tendency. The effects of parental support and conflict were found to operate primarily thro

Inhalation teratology and reproduction studies with 1,1-dichloro-2,2,2-trifluoroethane (HCFC-123).

HCFC 123 is one of the chemicals being developed as a replacement for CFC 11 in refrigerant and solvent applications. Supplementing earlier rat teratology studies, a rabbit inhalation teratology study was conducted. In addition, one-generation and two-generation inhalation reproduction studies were conducted. In the teratology study, the pregnant rabbits were exposed to levels of 0 (control), 500, 1500, and 5000 ppm, 6 hr per day from Days 6 through 18 of gestation. Slight body weight losses and reduced food consumption were seen in does in all three exposure level groups. This response follow

David understands that the procedure presents some risk for him and that after surgery he may no longer be able to continue playing football. His idols all have been football players and he now plays on his high school's team. Nevertheless, he wants to donate a kidney to his brother and agrees to being a donor as soon as the option is mentioned. He never displays any ambivalence and says, "I want to donate my kidney because then I'll be a hero to my family." This close family--of two parents

The borderline diagnosis in adolescents: symptoms and developmental history.

Adult criteria for borderline personality disorder distinguished a group of 27 inpatient adolescent girls from 23 nonborderline inpatient female comparison subjects. The two groups were compared on retrospectively assessed variables measuring psychological, familial, and constitutional factors. Variables most likely to predict borderline personality disorder included history of disrupted attachments, maternal neglect, maternal rejection, grossly inappropriate parental behavior, number of mother and father surrogates, physical abuse, and sexual abuse. Families of borderline adolescents were chr

Socioeconomic position and prediagnostic health care contacts in children with cancer in Denmark: a nationwide register study.

BACKGROUND: While underlying mechanisms and pathways of social inequalities in cancer survival have been extensively examined in adults, this is less so for children with cancer. Hypothesized mechanisms include prediagnostic utilization of and navigation through the health care system, which may differ by socioeconomic resources of the families. In this nationwide register-based study we investigated the association between measures of family socioeconomic position in relation to prediagnostic health care contacts and stage of disease at diagnosis in children with cancer in Denmark. METHODS:

Increasing the Chances of Natural Conception: Opinion Statement from the the Brazilian Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics Associations - FEBRASGO - Committee of Gynecological Endocrinology.

Considering that myths and misconceptions regarding natural procreation spread rapidly in the era of easy access to information and to social networks, adequate counseling about natural fertility and spontaneous conception should be encouraged in any kind of health assistance. Despite the fact that there is no strong-powered evidence about any of the aspects related to natural fertility, literature on how to increase the chances of a spontaneous pregnancy is available. In the present article, the Brazilian Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics Associations (FEBRASGO, in the Portuguese acrony

Perinatal and childhood risk factors for early-onset type 1 diabetes: a population-based case-control study in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: Certain factors originating from the perinatal and childhood periods are suspected of contributing to the recent increasing trend of childhood type 1 diabetes (T1D) incidence. This study sought to investigate the relationships between various perinatal and childhood risk factors and T1D incidence in young children (<10 years). METHODS: We used a nested case-control design based on 1,478,573 live births born in 2000-05 in Taiwan. Cases were 632 incident cases of T1D between 2000 and 2008. Ten matched controls for each case were randomly selected. Information on various perinatal ri

Targeted prenatal herpes simplex virus testing: can we identify women at risk of transmission to the neonate?

OBJECTIVE: Potential strategies to prevent neonatal herpes include herpes simplex virus (HSV) serologic testing and counseling of pregnant women and rapid HSV polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing of maternal genital secretions at delivery. The cost-effectiveness of these interventions would be improved if high-risk pregnancies could be easily identified for targeted testing. STUDY DESIGN: Washington State birth certificate data for all singleton live births from 1987 through 2002 were linked with infant death and hospital discharge data for birth and subsequent hospitalizations in a popula

Predictors of elevated blood lead levels among 3-year-old Ukrainian children: a nested case-control study.

OBJECTIVES: Lead is common in the general population. However, data are lacking for the Ukraine and many other countries from the former Soviet Union (FSU). In this study we evaluate the level of blood lead among 212 Ukrainian children and determine predictors of elevated lead levels. We also describe the health effects associated with elevated blood lead. METHODS: A nested case-control study from a prospective cohort of Ukrainian 3-year-old children was conducted in March 1998. Blood assays were analyzed for lead by labs at the Centers for Disease Control and using portable examination kits.

Control selection strategies in case-control studies of childhood diseases.

To address concerns regarding the representativeness of controls in case-control studies, two selection strategies were evaluated in a study of childhood leukemia, which commenced in California in 1995. The authors selected two controls per case: one from among children identified by using computerized birth records and located successfully, the other from a roster of friends; both were matched on demographic factors. Sixty-four birth certificate-friend control pairs were enrolled (n = 128). Additionally, 192 "ideal" controls were selected without tracing from the birth records. Data on parent

[Role of the father in the development of school-age children. Results of an epidemiologic study].

As part of an epidemiological follow-up study, data collected from 356 children at ages 8 and 13 and from their parents were analyzed to examine the relationship of parental child-rearing behavior and parents' psychological problems to the intellectual, emotional and social development of the offspring. The results revealed that while children are growing up father and child influence each other in specific ways. The fathers were particularly active in developing their children's cognitive abilities and had a strong influence especially on the development of their sons. At both age 8 and age 1

Genetic analysis of a representative of the military nobility from the Dal'niy (Vydrin) burial ground of the Chernyakhov culture in the Kursk region.

During the late Roman period, the military and political conditions in Eastern Europe declined both along the frontier between the Roman Empire and Barbaricum and within those territories. The Chernyakhov culture played an important role in the dynamics of these events. According to historical and archaeological evidence, this society was formed by Germanic tribes that had moved into the region from northwestern Europe, as well as a nomadic population of the steppes. The Chernyakhov culture's funerary traditions included the placement of weapons, most likely solely in the graves of military no

Clinical manifestations of Armfield syndrome in females with heterozygous FAM50A variants and skewed X-chromosome inactivation.

BACKGROUND: The FAM50A gene encodes the FAM50A protein, which has been reported to be a putative spliceosomal C-complex protein and has also been implicated in several types of cancer. Pathogenic FAM50A variants have been associated with an X-linked recessive disorder known as Intellectual developmental disorder, X-linked syndromic, Armfield type (MRXSA). METHODS: We report the case of a Spanish female patient with macrocephaly, global developmental delay, and leukoencephalopathy. Whole-exome sequencing (WES) was performed to investigate the underlying genetic cause of the patient's condition

Parental Anxiety, Depression, and Sleep Quality in Relation to Infant Sleep: A Two-Cohort Longitudinal Study.

OBJECTIVES: Parental mental health is linked to infant sleep, but research has focused mainly on mothers and on single distress dimensions. This study examined whether parental anxiety, depression, and sleep quality are associated with infant sleep across the first year, and whether mothers and fathers contribute differently. METHOD: Two independent cohorts of Taiwanese families (42 and 80 infants; 107 and 270 observations) were followed across the first year, assessed at 1-6 months (Cohort 1) and 1-12 months (Cohort 2). At each assessment, both parents completed the Hospital Anxiety and Depr

The Process to Caregiver Expertise: A Constructivist Grounded Theory Study of Parents of Infants With Critical Congenital Heart Disease.

BACKGROUND: Caregivers of hospitalized infants with critical congenital heart disease (CCHD) experience stress, emotions and contextual challenges with staff and unit culture during their infant's stay in critical care units, especially if the stay is lengthy. These compounding adverse conditions impact a caregiver's ability to learn to care for their infant. The purpose of this constructivist grounded theory study was to construct an explanatory theory, based on the analysis of the caregivers' perspectives, uncovering the process caregivers of hospitalized infants go through to become experts

Case Report: Short rib-thoracic dysplasia type 3 presenting with predominant respiratory manifestations.

Short rib-thoracic dysplasia type 3 (SRTD3) is a rare skeletal ciliopathy caused by pathogenic variants in DYNC2H1, with a broad spectrum of clinical severity ranging from lethal neonatal disease to mild phenotypes presenting later in childhood. We report a 20-month-old girl who presented with recurrent infection-associated wheezing and a rhinovirus-associated acute lower respiratory tract infection complicated by hypoxemia and respiratory distress. Chest computed tomography revealed bilateral patchy ground-glass opacities with focal consolidation and a mildly narrowed thoracic cage with short
