Long term treatment of bipolar disorder.

Bipolar disorder is characterised by recurrent episodes of mania and depression. The major objective of long term treatment is to reduce the frequency of these episodes. Lithium is the most widely recommended drug for this purpose, having been shown in controlled clinical trials to be more effective than placebo in reducing the likelihood of relapse. Unfortunately, its effectiveness in clinical practice is less than that predicted from these trials. A major cause of relapse is noncompliance, largely due to intolerance to adverse effects such as perceived mental sluggishness, thirst, polyuria a

Axis V--Global Assessment of Functioning Scale. Evaluation of a self-report version.

The present study examines a self-report version of the Global Assessment of Functioning Scale according to Axis V (GAF self-report). The sample (n = 73) was a psychiatric outpatient population from a catchment area clinic. Patients with psychotic and organic mental disorders were not included. The diagnostic distribution on Axis I was similar to the findings from previous studies. Axis II disorders were identified among 47%, of whom a majority also had a concomitant Axis I disorder. The mean GAF expert score was 66.5 (range: 48-86). High complexity and severity of disorders and a high number

Depersonalization, vertigo and Ménière's disease.

Ménière's disease is generally accepted to be a consequence of distention of the endolymphatic sac of the inner ear. Although the exact etiology is unclear, there is a body of research suggesting that Ménière's disease is of psychosomatic origin. While we do not intend to review the literature exhaustively, we briefly review several frequently cited studies. Even though this literature is so severely flawed that no solid conclusions may be drawn from it, certain questions about the psychological aspect of this disorder continue to surface. Our limited access to patients with vertigo has not al

Public Knowledge, Stigma, and Discrimination Toward Schizophrenia: Results From a National Survey in Türkiye.

PURPOSE: In light of the limited and predominantly regional evidence on public stigma toward schizophrenia in Türkiye, this study aimed to address the lack of nationally representative data by investigating public perceptions of schizophrenia, levels of knowledge, and attitudes toward social distance and related factors in a large, nationally representative sample from Türkiye. In doing so, the research questions were explicitly derived from this gap, focusing on how education, socioeconomic status, gender, and familiarity with mental illness are associated with knowledge and social distance.

Knowledge, Beliefs, and Experiences With Mental Health Services and Help-Seeking in People With Aphasia and Care Partners.

PURPOSE: Supporting psychological well-being in persons with aphasia (PWA) can improve social and health outcomes; however, PWA and their care partners (CPs) are often not receiving mental health support. Previous research explores this from the perspective of health care professionals. AIMS: The aim of this study was to examine knowledge, beliefs, and experiences related to mental health services directly from PWA and CPs. METHOD: The study included 11 PWA and 11 CPs. Participants completed a guided survey (virtual) with opportunities for elaboration related to the knowledge, beliefs, and e

Determining behavioral intention and its predictors toward preconception care use among reproductive age women in Arba Minch town, Southern Ethiopia, 2022: a cross-sectional study based on the theory of planned behavior.

BACKGROUND: Preconception care is a highly effective, evidence-based intervention aimed at promoting the health of reproductive-age women and reducing adverse pregnancy-related outcomes. The Ethiopian Ministry of Health plans to integrate preconception care services into the country's existing healthcare system. However, women's preferences may be influenced by their values and customs. Therefore, this study used the theory of planned behavior to assess women's intention toward preconception care use and its predictors among reproductive-age women in Arba Minch town, southern Ethiopia. Effects of adjuvant mental practice using inverse video of the unaffected upper limb in subacute stroke: a pilot randomized controlled study.

Mental practice has shown some positive effects on arm and hand ability and mobility after stroke. This study's objective was to investigate the adjuvant effects of mental practice using an inverse video of the unaffected limb in subacute stroke patients with severe motor impairment on motor improvement, functional outcomes, and activities of daily living. Participants (n = 20) with severe hemiplegia after a unilateral first-ever stroke within 6 months were divided into two groups. The intervention group performed additional mental practice using an inverse video of the unaffected limb for 20

'Disease, illness, affliction? Don't know': Ambivalence and ambiguity in the narratives of young people about having acne.

The popular characterisation of acne as a mundane and insignificant feature of adolescence sits at odds with academic studies showing the detrimental impacts of the condition on people of various ages. Drawing from in-depth qualitative interviews with 13- to 25-year olds living in England, this article will consider some of the tensions between two messages about acne through the ambiguities in young people's narratives. Consistent with existing literature on skin conditions and visual differences more broadly, participants in the study recounted ways in which acne negatively shaped their live

Patient preferences in tinnitus outcomes and treatments: a qualitative study.

In order to identify patient preferences in care for tinnitus an in depth grounded theory study was conducted. This consisted of interviews with 41 patients who had sought help for tinnitus across a range of locations and tinnitus services in England. Preferences for outcomes were for both the removal of the tinnitus and for improved coping and management of the tinnitus. Preferences for treatment were for individualized care, tailored information and for treatment to assist with psychological adjustment and auditory distraction. Adoption of treatments to manage tinnitus were based on a trial

Occupational Therapy Interventions for Adults With Fibromyalgia.

Evidence Connection articles provide a clinical application of systematic reviews developed in conjunction with the American Occupational Therapy Association's (AOTA's) Evidence-Based Practice Project. In this Evidence Connection article, we describe a case report of a person recently diagnosed with fibromyalgia. The occupational therapy assessment and intervention process in the home setting is described. Findings from the systematic review (Poole & Siegel, 2017) on this topic were published in the January/February 2017 issue of the American Journal of Occupational Therapy and in AOTA's Occup

Stages of change in audiology: comparison of three self-assessment measures.

OBJECTIVE: In a clinical setting, theories of health behaviour change could help audiologists and other hearing health care professionals understand the barriers that prevent people with hearing problems to seek audiological help. The transtheoretical (stages of change) model of health behaviour change is one of these theories. It describes a person's journey towards health behaviour change (e.g. seeking help or taking up rehabilitation) in separate stages: precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and, finally, maintenance. A short self-assessment measure of stages of change may g

Down and Out in London: Addictive Behaviors in Homelessness.

Backgrounds and aims Problem gambling occurs at higher levels in the homeless than the general population. Past work has not established the extent to which problem gambling is a cause or consequence of homelessness. This study sought to replicate recent observations of elevated rates of problem gambling in a British homeless sample, and extend that finding by characterizing (a) the temporal sequencing of the effect, (b) relationships with drug and alcohol misuse, and (c) awareness and access of treatment services for gambling by the homeless. Methods We recruited 72 participants from homeless

Attitudes of significant others of people with Ménière's disease vary from coping to victimization.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the impact, reactions and coping methods of the significant others (SOs) of people with Ménière's disease (MD). DESIGN: SOs of people with MD were asked to answer open-ended questions reporting the 'life effects' and 'positive experiences' they have had as a result of the partner's condition. The replies to the 'life effects' question was categorized using the WHO-ICF framework. The responses of 'life effects' from this study and the 'positive experiences' reported in a recent study ( Manchaiah et al, 2013 ) were evaluated with K-means clustering analysis. STUDY SAMPLE:
