BACKGROUND: Calcific tendinitis is characterized by calcium hydroxyapatite crystal deposition within tendons and is a common cause of musculoskeletal pain in adults. Its clinical manifestations may be acute, chronic, or asymptomatic. Acute calcific tendinitis is self-resolving condition that is rarely reported in the pediatric population and may be overlooked for more common processes, leading to unnecessary treatment.
METHODS: A chart reivew was performed of a single case of acute calcific tendonitis of the index finger in a child.
RESULTS: We describe a case of calcific tendinitis of the i

We report a case of a 60-year-old man who was referred to a palliative care clinic with monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS)-associated neuropathy, responding to a therapeutic trial of warfarin. Electromyography showed distal symmetric sensory axonal neuropathy. The patient reported having had improvement of his neuropathic symptoms while taking warfarin postoperatively for thromboprophylaxis 1 year prior, and recurrence of his symptoms after the warfarin was discontinued. The patient was rechallenged with a trial of warfarin, targeting an international normalised ratio of

In this case, a young male patient diagnosed as hypophosphatemic osteomalacia and ankylosing spondylitis (AS) will be assessed by literature. A 32-year-old male patient who had been previously diagnosed as ankylosing spondylitis and hypophosphatemic osteomalacia was admitted to our clinic. In the beginning of the disease, he complained of pain on the first metatarsal bone and low back. Sacroiliac magnetic resonance (MR) images were interpreted as sacroiliitis. He was diagnosed as AS, and referred to many hospitals and received several therapies. He did not benefit from the treatment and his co

Leptomeningeal dissemination of tumor cells, also referred to as neoplastic meningitis, is most frequently seen in patients with late-stage cancer and mostly associated with a poor prognosis. Basically, neoplastic meningitis may affect all patients with a malignant tumor but is most common in patients affected by lung cancer, breast carcinoma, melanoma or hematologic neoplasms such as lymphoma and leukemia. Controlled clinical trials are largely lacking which results in various non-standardized treatment regimens. The presence of solid tumor manifestations in the CNS as well as the extracrania

A 66-year-old male nonsmoker from Arizona was referred to our practice for evaluation of chronic cough. He had a history of biopsy-proven relapsing polychondritis manifesting as right auricular and nasal pain and swelling 9 months prior to presentation. The onset of his cough coincided with the diagnosis of relapsing polychondritis, and he was prescribed prednisone 90 mg/d, which promptly relieved his rheumatologic and respiratory symptoms. A chest radiograph, obtained prior to the initiation of therapy, was normal. Any attempts at decreasing the dose of the glucocorticoid to < 30 mg/d resulte

Wandering spleen, also referred to as 'ptotic spleen', is a rare clinical condition characterized by splenic migration form its normal left hypochondrial position to any other abdominal or pelvic position. Among the multifactorial etiologies proposed, laxity of the spleen's primary supporting ligaments is the most agreed-upon hypothesis. We present one rare case of wandering spleen in an 11-year-old girl who presented with recurrent abdominal pain with no localizing features. Her abdominal examination revealed an intra-abdominal left iliac fossa lump with restricted mobility, which was confirm

BACKGROUND: Chronic pancreatitis can be relentless, resulting in debilitating pain and endocrine and exocrine insufficiency. Medical interventions are used initially but when these fail, surgical therapy is often indicated. Surgical options include resection, drainage, and hybrid procedures. Hybrid procedures, such as the Frey procedure are associated with improved outcomes in select patients. These advantages are even greater when the Frey is performed laparoscopically.
METHODS: A patient with chronic pancreatitis was referred to our clinic. Preoperative imaging revealed a dilated main pancr

This case report describes a 43-year-old woman with a previous anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction and medial meniscectomy who presented with right knee dysesthesias radiating into her medial ankle with associated allodynia. An extensive work-up was pursued, without a definitive diagnosis found or improvement in the patient's symptoms. Eventually, she was referred to Pain Medicine for an ultrasound-guided saphenous nerve (SN) block, where a scan before the injection revealed a large cyst anteromedial to the sartorius in the expected location of the SN. A case of protothecosis causing non-ambulatory paraparesis in a dog without clinical evidence of disseminated infection is described. A five-year-old female Labrador retriever was referred with a 10-day history of progressive non-ambulatory paraparesis and lumbar pain as the only physical and neurological abnormalities. Lumbar myelography revealed severe extradural spinal cord compression extending from L4 to L7 vertebrae, and a right hemilaminectomy was performed. Surgical findings included an adherent whitish hard ill-defined mass. Cytology and biopsy results disclosed the presence of algae

Pneumothorax (PTX) is the presence of an excessive amount of air between the two layers of the pleura. The clinical results depend on the extent of lung collapse. Bedside lung ultrasonography (BLUS) is a valuable way to diagnose PTX in the emergency department. The lung point is a pathognomonic sign of PTX. Here, we present a previously healthy 17-year-old male with left shoulder pain for 2 days, who was referred to the emergency department (ED). He had no history of trauma. BLUS was performed by the emergency physician. The lung point was detected with BLUS, and he was diagnosed with primary

A 23-year-old woman presented to the emergency department (ED) with a 3-day history of lower back pain. She had seen her general practitioner 2 days previously who prescribed trimethoprim for a confirmed urinary tract infection. Routine admission observations showed she was tachycardic, tachypnoeic and slightly hypotensive but non-feverish with normal oxygen saturations. Her urine sample revealed that she was pregnant but was otherwise negative. The patient maintained that she was unaware she was pregnant. She was reviewed by an ED staff grade who was suspicious of a ruptured ectopic pregnancy

Patellar tendinopathy (PT) is a clinical and chronic overuse condition of unknown pathogenesis and etiology marked by anterior knee pain typically manifested at the inferior pole of the patella. PT has been referred to as "jumper's knee" since it is particularly common among populations of jumping athletes, such as basketball and volleyball players. Due to its common refractory response to conservative treatment, a variety of new treatments have emerged recently that include dry-needling, sclerosing injections, platelet-rich plasma therapy, arthroscopic surgical procedures, surgical resection
