An Open-Source Tool for Automated Human-Level Circling Behavior Detection.

Quantifying behavior and relating it to underlying biological states is of paramount importance in many life science fields. Although barriers to recording postural data have been reduced by progress in deep-learning-based computer vision tools for keypoint tracking, extracting specific behaviors from this data remains challenging. Manual behavior coding, the present gold standard, is labor-intensive and subject to intra- and inter-observer variability. Automatic methods are stymied by the difficulty of explicitly defining complex behaviors, even ones which appear obvious to the human eye. Her

MAVS Antagonizes Human Stem Cell Senescence as a Mitochondrial Stabilizer.

Materials that establish functional, stable interfaces to targeted tissues for long-term monitoring/stimulation equipped with diagnostic/therapeutic capabilities represent breakthroughs in biomedical research and clinical medicine. A fundamental challenge is the mechanical and chemical mismatch between tissues and implants that ultimately results in device failure for corrosion by biofluids and associated foreign body response. Of particular interest is in the development of bioactive materials at the level of chemistry and mechanics for high-performance, minimally invasive function, simultane

Gene expression in the intestine of newborn piglets after hypoxia-reoxygenation.

BACKGROUND: In preterm infants, intestinal hypoxia may partly contribute to the pathophysiology of necrotizing enterocolitis through changes in gene expression. Splanchnic hypoxia can be detected with monitoring of regional splanchnic oxygen saturation (rsSO2). Using a piglet model of asphyxia, we aimed to correlate changes in rsSO2 to gene expression. METHODS: Forty-two newborn piglets were randomized to control or intervention groups. Intervention groups were subjected to hypoxia until they were acidotic and hypotensive. Next, they were reoxygenated for 30 min according to randomization, i.

Current status of patient-reported outcome measures and other subjective assessment grading tools in bladder pain syndrome.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Bladder pain syndrome (BPS) is characterised by chronic pain in the bladder area accompanied by urgency and/or frequency without the presence of other confusable diseases. Owing to a lack of gold standard diagnostic tests and definitive cure it is paramount to define treatment goals and validated measurements of outcomes. Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are validated questionnaires completed by patients that can help to reduce ambiguity in the BPS patient treatment pathway, but they are currently underutilised. We present to our knowledge the first summar

Hypoxic acclimatization training improves the resistance to motion sickness.

OBJECTIVE: Vestibular provocation is one of the main causes of flight illusions, and its occurrence is closely related to the susceptibility of motion sickness (MS). However, existing training programs have limited effect in improving the resistance to motion sickness. In this study, we investigated the effects of hypoxia acclimatization training (HAT) on the resistance to motion sickness. METHODS: Healthy military college students were identified as subjects according to the criteria. MS model was induced by a rotary chair. Experimental groups included control, HAT, 3D roller training (3DRT)

[Disruptors of thyroid hormones: Which consequences for human health and environment?].

Endocrine disruptors (EDs) of chemical origin are the subject of numerous studies, some of which have led to measures aimed at limiting their use and their impact on the environment and human health. Dozens of hormones have been described and are common to all vertebrates (some chemically related messengers have also been identified in invertebrates), with variable roles that are not always known. The effects of endocrine disruptors therefore potentially concern all animal species via all endocrine axes. These effects are added to the other parameters of the exposome, leading to strong, multip

Females with impaired ovarian function could be vulnerable to environmental pollutants: identification via next-generation sequencing of the vaginal microbiome.

The vaginal microbiome has been widely investigated. However, its relationship with impaired ovarian function has not been evaluated. We conducted a next-generation sequencing (NGS) study of the vaginal microbiome in females with normal and decreased ovarian function and analysed its sensitivity to environmental pollutants. Vaginal swabs were collected from 92 individuals (22 with impaired ovarian function). The 16S rDNA sequences were assembled by FLASH and clustered in OTUs. Diversity analysis was performed using QIIME. The impaired function group showed lower AMH (p < .01) and higher FSH (p

Pet ownership and survival of European older adults.

With pet ownership on the rise, millions of individuals are exposed to this environmental exposure. Although the subject has been largely studied, more evidence is needed to clarify the potential association of pet ownership with human health. The aim of this research is to study the potential association of pet exposure (any pet, cat, dog, bird, fish) with all-cause, cardiovascular and cancer mortality of older ( ≥  50 years) European residents. To this end, a total of 23,274 participants from the Survey of Health Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) were employed (median follow-up 119 mon
