Theoretical Investigation of Stacked Two-Dimensional Transition-Metal Dichalcogenide Materials: The Role of Chemical Species and Number of Monolayers.

We report a theoretical investigation, based on density functional theory calculations, of the role of chalcogen species and the number of monolayers in the physical-chemical properties of multilayer two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs, MQ2), where M belongs to groups 8 and 10 of the periodic table, Q = S, Se, or Te, and the multilayer is composed of 1 to 6 layers. From the analysis of structural energetic, and electronic properties, we found significant changes in lattice parameters and exfoliation energies as a function of the number of layers, particularly affected by the

Enhancement of spin-orbit interaction and nearly perfect spin-reversed efficiency in a one-dimensional photonic crystal containing an anisotropic defect.

Although the defect modes of photonic crystals (PhCs) have been intensively investigated to enhance the interactions between light and special materials, e.g., nonlinear material for switches or gain material for lasers, the enhancement of photonic spin-orbit interaction (SOI) by the defect modes has not been well studied so far. In this work, based on the PhCs containing the anisotropic-material defect, we find rich and new phenomena for such systems from the enhanced SOI, such as the high vortex-conversion efficiency and saturation at 50% for the normally incident Gaussian beam, the large ph

Comparative analysis of the effects of Origanum vulgare essential oil and carvacrol nanoemulsified and non-nanoemulsified forms against Salmonella Typhimurium strains.

This study investigates the potential of Origanum vulgare L. (OVEO), carvacrol (CAR), and their nanoemulsions (nOVEO and nCAR) in subinhibitory concentrations as antimicrobial agents against S. typhimurium strains in vitro and in situ. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) ranged from 0.59 to 0.60 mg/mL for the nanoemulsions and 0.68 to 1.5 mg/mL for their non-nanoemulsified counterparts. Growth kinetics analysis showed that all treatments at 1/4 MIC, 1/2 MIC, and MIC reduced the growth rate and prolonged the lag phase. Flow cytometry analysis revealed that these treatments caused permea

Are Solid Particles Ready for Prime-Time Proteomics?

We evaluate the performance of nonporous C-18 stationary phases in high-speed proteomics workflows. We employed two commercially available sub-2 μm nonporous particle (NPP) materials, ODS-IIIE (1.5 μm) and SOLAD (1.0 μm), to fabricate analytical columns using 150 μm internal diameter (i.d.) fused silica capillaries to ensure compatibility with nano-UHPLC and nano-HPLC pressure regimes. Using "long" NPP columns (15-25 cm) connected to a conventional nano-UHPLC, we found that both materials supported efficient peptide separations within the flow rate and pressure ranges typical of nano-UHPLC sys

The Big Bang of an epidemic: a metapopulation approach to identify the spatiotemporal origin of contagious diseases and their universal spreading pattern.

In this paper, we propose a mathematical framework that governs the evolution of epidemic dynamics, encompassing both intra-population dynamics and inter-population mobility within a meta-population network. By linearizing this dynamical system, we can identify the spatial starting point(s), namely the source(s) and the initiation time of the epidemic, which we refer to as the "Big Bang" of the epidemic. Furthermore, we introduce a novel concept of effective distance to track disease spread within the network. Our analysis reveals that the contagion geometry can be represented as a line with a

Kinetics of the Reaction Between the Criegee Intermediate CH2OO and NO2: Experimental Measurements and Comparison with Theory.

Kinetics of the gas phase reaction between the stabilized Criegee intermediate formaldehyde oxide (CH2OO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) have been measured using laser flash photolysis of CH2I2/O2/N2/NO2 mixtures coupled with time-resolved broadband ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy. Experiments were performed in N2 under pseudo-first-order conditions at temperatures between 242 and 353 K and pressures in the range 25 to 300 Torr. The kinetics of CH2OO + NO2 are independent of pressure, with a mean rate coefficient of k1 = (1.24 ± 0.22) × 10-12 cm3 s-1 at 298 K, where the uncertainty represents …

Regulating the d-Band Center of an FeCu/NC Dual-Metal Catalyst for Self-Powered and Smart Sensing of Oxidizing and Reducing Gas.

Gas sensors based on zinc-air batteries that integrate battery functionality expand the self-powered and energy-harvesting capabilities of sensing systems. However, the sluggish and inadequate reaction kinetics at the interface and exclusive detection of oxidizing gases restrict their sensing response and the sensing scenario. Herein, a dual-metal FeCu/NC catalyst is fabricated to facilitate the reduction reaction at the interface. The incorporation of Fe shifts the d-band center of the Cu catalyst to the Fermi level, facilitating NO2 gas adsorption and decreasing Gibbs free energy of NO2 redu

Surface Crystallization Enhancement and Defect Passivation for Efficiency and Stability Enhancement of Inverted Wide-Bandgap Perovskite Solar Cells.

Wide-bandgap (WBG) inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are used as the top cell for tandem solar cells, which is an effective way to outperform the Shockley-Queisser limit. However, the low efficiency and poor phase stability still seriously restrict the application of WBG inverted PSCs. Here, the surface of the WBG perovskite film was passivated by the synthesized 1,2,4-tris(3-thienyl)benzene (THB). The THB size well matches with the halogen ion vacancy on the perovskite surface, and the S atom in THB can strongly interact with Pb2+ on the surface of the WBG perovskite film to the greatest

Understanding the origin of the high thermoelectric figure of merit of Zintl-phase KCaBi.

Herein, we have investigated the unexplored thermoelectric properties of Zintl-phase KCaBi using first-principles calculation and the solution of the Boltzmann transport equation. KCaBi shows intrinsically very low lattice thermal conductivities (κl) along the (x(y), and z)-directions of (1.78, 0.68) and (1.15, 0.43) W m-1 K-1 at 300 and 800 K, respectively. Along with the effect of very low κl, the high figure of merit (ZT) for p-type KCaBi results from the high Seebeck coefficients (S) and optimal electrical conductivities (σ), which originate from the high and steep total density of state (

Microswimmers in vortices: dynamics and trapping.

Biological and artificial microswimmers often self-propel in external flows of vortical nature; relevant examples include algae in small-scale ocean eddies, spermatozoa in uterine peristaltic flows and bacteria in microfluidic devices. A recent experiment has shown that swimming bacteria in model vortices are expelled from the vortex all the way to a well-defined depletion zone (A. Sokolov and I. S. Aranson, Rapid expulsion of microswimmers by a vortical flow. Nat. Commun., 2016, 7, 11114). In this paper, we propose a theoretical model to investigate the dynamics of elongated microswimmers in

Association of the Hepatitis B Virus Large Surface Protein with Viral Infectivity and Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress-mediated Liver Carcinogenesis.

Hepatitis B is the most prevalent viral hepatitis worldwide, affecting approximately one-third of the world's population. Among HBV factors, the surface protein is the most sensitive biomarker for viral infection, given that it is expressed at high levels in all viral infection phases. The large HBV surface protein (LHBs) contains the integral pre-S1 domain, which binds to the HBV receptor sodium taurocholate co transporting polypeptide on the hepatocyte to facilitate viral entry. The accumulation of viral LHBs and its prevalent pre-S mutants in chronic HBV carriers triggers a sustained endopl

The effect of bolus viscosity on laryngeal closure in swallowing: kinematic analysis using 320-row area detector CT.

The present study examined the effect of bolus viscosity on the onset of laryngeal closure (relative to hyoid elevation), the duration of laryngeal closure, and other key events of swallowing in ten healthy volunteers. All volunteers underwent 320-row area detector computed tomography swallow studies while swallowing 10 ml of honey-thick barium (5 % v/w) and thin barium (5 % v/w) in a 45° reclining position. Three-dimensional images of both consistencies were created in 29 phases at an interval of 0.10 s (100 ms) over a 2.90-s duration. The timing of the motions of the hyoid bone, soft palate,

Nasopharyngeal colonization and invasive disease are enhanced by the cell wall hydrolases LytB and LytC of Streptococcus pneumoniae.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus pneumoniae is a common colonizer of the human nasopharynx and one of the major pathogens causing invasive disease worldwide. Dissection of the molecular pathways responsible for colonization, invasion, and evasion of the immune system will provide new targets for antimicrobial or vaccine therapies for this common pathogen. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We have constructed mutants lacking the pneumococcal cell wall hydrolases (CWHs) LytB and LytC to investigate the role of these proteins in different phases of the pneumococcal pathogenesis. Our results show that Lyt

Measles virus inhibits human immunodeficiency virus type 1 reverse transcription and replication by blocking cell-cycle progression of CD4+ T lymphocytes.

Acute measles virus (MV) infection results in a decrease in plasma human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) RNA levels in co-infected children. An in vitro peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) culture system was used to assess the mechanisms by which MV blocks HIV-1 replication. MV inhibited proliferation of CD4(+) T lymphocytes, the target cell for HIV-1 replication. In the presence of MV, cells did not progress to G(1b) and S phases, steps critical for the completion of HIV-1 reverse transcription and productive replication. This block in cell-cycle progression was characterized by an…
