Defensive activation to (un)predictable interoceptive threat: The NPU respiratory threat test (NPUr).

Potentially life-threatening interoceptive sensations easily engage the behavioral defensive system. Resulting fear and anxiety toward interoceptive threat are functionally distinct states that are hypothesized to play a prominent role in the etiology of panic disorder. The present study aimed to investigate whether fear- and anxiety-potentiated startle responses occur to predictable and unpredictable interoceptive threat, respectively. Therefore, we modified the NPU threat test (Schmitz & Grillon, ) and replaced the aversive electrocutaneous stimulus with an aversive interoceptive stimulus (a

The discordance between subjectively and objectively measured physical function in women with fibromyalgia: association with catastrophizing and self-efficacy cognitions. The al-Ándalus project.

PURPOSE: People with fibromyalgia experience a disagreement between patient-reported (i.e., subjective) and performance-based (i.e., objective) status. This study aimed to (i) corroborate the discordance between subjectively and objectively measured physical function and (ii) examine whether catastrophizing (worrying, pain magnifying, and helpless cognitions) and self-efficacy (believing capable to manage pain) are independently associated with this discordance. METHODS: This population-based cross-sectional study included 405 women with fibromyalgia and 193 age-matched female controls. Parti

Testing a "content meets process" model of depression vulnerability and rumination: Exploring the moderating role of set-shifting deficits.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: MacCoon and Newman's (2006) "content meets process" model posits that deficits in cognitive control make it difficult to disengage from negative cognitions caused by a negative cognitive style (NCS). The present study examined if the interactive effect of cognitive set-shifting abilities and NCS predicts rumination and past history of depression. METHODS: Participants were 90 previously depressed individuals and 95 never depressed individuals. We administered three laboratory tasks that assess set-shifting: the Wisconsin Card-Sorting Task, the Emotional Card-Sorting

The use of a wearable camera improves autobiographical memory in patients with Alzheimer's disease.

Despite the marked impairment of recent episodic memories in Alzheimer's disease, there have been few attempts to rehabilitate these deficits. We used a novel external memory aid to promote recall of episodic memories in patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. SenseCam, a small wearable camera, recorded significant events in the lives of six Alzheimer's disease patients. Every two days for two weeks each patient's memory for an event was assessed, followed by a structured review of the SenseCam images. Longer-term recall was tested one and three months later. A written diary contro

Predicting quit attempts among homeless smokers seeking cessation treatment: an ecological momentary assessment study.

INTRODUCTION: Homeless adults are more likely to smoke tobacco and are less likely to successfully quit smoking than smokers in the general population, despite comparable numbers of cessation attempts and desire to quit. To date, studies that have examined smoking cessation in homeless samples have used traditional lab/clinic-based assessment methodologies. Real-time assessment of key variables may provide new insights into the process of quitting among homeless smokers. METHODS: The purpose of the current study was to identify predictors of a quit attempt using real-time assessment methodolo

Symptoms of depression and rates of neurocognitive impairment in HIV positive patients in Beijing, China.

BACKGROUND: In China an estimated 780,000 people are living with HIV (PLWH). In high-income countries PLWH are at increased risk of depression, with subsequent adverse consequences for quality of life, and HIV-related morbidity and mortality. There are few data from low-and middle-income countries. The aims of this country-specific investigation of the Asia Pacific NeuroAIDS Consortium (APNAC) study were to establish the point prevalence, severity and HIV-related and non-HIV related correlates of depressive symptoms in PLWH, in Beijing, China. METHOD: PLWH attending an outpatient clinic at Di

The salient self: the left intraparietal sulcus responds to social as well as perceptual-salience after self-association.

Perceptual learning is associated with experience-based changes in stimulus salience. Here, we use a novel procedure to show that learning a new association between a self-label and a neutral stimulus produces fast alterations in social salience measured by interference when targets associated with other people have to be selected in the presence of self-associated distractors. Participants associated neutral shapes with either themselves or a friend, over a short run of training trials. Subsequently, the shapes had to be identified in hierarchical (global-local) forms. The data show that givi

Neuropsychological variables and clinical status in anorexia nervosa: relationship between visuospatial memory and central coherence and eating disorder symptom severity.

AIM: To explore the relationship between visuospatial memory, weak central coherence, and eating disorder (ED) symptoms in anorexia nervosa (AN) inpatients. SAMPLE: 31 female AN inpatients. METHODS: Rey complex figure test (RCFT) was used to assess both visuospatial memory and central coherence. RCFT consisted of copy and recall trials. ED symptoms were assessed by The Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire (EDE-Q) and The Clinical and Research Inventory for Eating Disorders (CR-EAT). RESULTS: We found a statistically significant negative correlation between recall accuracy and the total

The impact of pregaming on subsequent blood alcohol concentrations: an event-level analysis.

Pregaming has been highlighted as an especially deleterious college drinking ritual. The present study assessed (a) event-level associations between pregaming and biologic samples of blood alcohol concentration (BrAC) and (b) the impact of one's alcohol-related behaviors (measured by AUDIT-C scores) on the likelihood that respondents would report pregaming prior to a night out drinking. The sample included adult (n=1029; collegiate and non-college-affiliated) bar patrons in a southeastern college community. Multiple and linear regressions were conducted to determine the association between pre

Posttraumatic stress disorder: protective and risk factors in 18 survivors of a plane crash.

The aim of this study is to identify protective and risk factors related to the development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) on a sample of survivors from a single plane crash. Eighteen survivors were examined 6 months following the event. The subjects all underwent psychiatric interviews, Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale structured interviews, personality and cognitive tests. Only 38.9% of them presented with all of the symptoms of PTSD; 22.2% showed no symptoms for PTSD; remaining survivors exhibited emotional/affective symptoms related to the event. In addition to the severity of th

Those were the days: memory bias for the frequency of positive events, depression, and self-enhancement.

Past research has associated depression with memory biases pertaining to the frequency, duration, and specificity of past events. Associations have been proposed between both negative and positive memory biases and depression symptoms. However, research has not examined the occurrence of actual events over time in the study of memory bias. To address these limitations and investigate whether a negative or positive memory bias is associated with symptoms of depression, we collected weekly data on specific types of life events over a 4-year period from a sample of college students, and asked stu

Consistency of reporting sexual and physical abuse during psychological treatment of personality disorder: an explorative study.

The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of decreasing, consistent and increasing reports of sexual and physical abuse after 12 months of long-term psychological treatment of personality disorders, to investigate demographic and clinical characteristics predictive of inconsistency of reporting abuse, and to explore whether autobiographical memory may account for this inconsistency. In 229 clinical participants with an SCID II diagnosed personality disorder, 180 (78.6%) reported the same instances of invasive sexual and/or physical abuse on a trauma questionnaire (SPAQ) at basel

Anosognosia in mild cognitive impairment and mild Alzheimer's disease: frequency and neuropsychological correlates.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate severity of anosognosia and to identify its neuropsychological correlates in preclinical and clinical Alzheimer's Disease (AD). METHODS: The Clinical Insight Rating Scale, the Anosognosia Questionnaire for Dementia (AQ-D), and the Mental Deterioration Battery were used to assess anosognosia and cognitive performances in mild AD (N = 38), amnesic mild cognitive impairment (a-MCI; N = 35), and multiple domain MCI (md-MCI; N = 38). RESULTS: Patients with mild AD were more anosognosic than both MCI groups, which, however, did not differ from one other. A categorical diagn

Everyday cognitive function after craniopharyngioma in childhood.

Despite clinical impressions that cognitive complaints are prominent in patients with a history of craniopharyngioma, formal neuropsychologic documentation is inconsistent. This study assessed everyday cognitive complaints and neuropsychologic test performance to evaluate the prevalence of problems and the relationship of these domains to one another in patients treated for craniopharyngioma in childhood or adolescence. Ten patients treated for craniopharyngioma completed measures of everyday cognitive function (Cognitive Failures Questionnaire, Rivermead Behavioural Memory Test) and a battery

An assessment of self-reported disease classification in epidemiological studies of dry eye.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the reliability of self-reported dry eye disease status and patient-related predictors of misclassification in contact lens wearers. METHODS: Patients completed the Contact Lens Dry Eye Questionnaire (CLDEQ) short form on two occasions. Test-retest reliability of the CLDEQ composite score was determined using the 95% limits of agreement (LoA) and an intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). The kappa statistic was used to determine reliability of disease-classification-based CLDEQ composite score cutoff points. Predictors of misclassification were determined by multivaria

Psychological and emotional aspects and pain.

A patient's psychological condition can be influenced by symptoms and, at the same time, it can influence the perception of symptoms. In psychological assessment, pain can modify the results of a questionnaire, so a patient's state at the moment of the evaluation should be taken into account. Questionnaires used in assessment do not always provide clear-cut answers concerning the individual psychological component. Moreover, difficulties in classifying headache patients does not permit correct comparisons between population samples whenever patients are not classified into well defined homogen

Relations between fatigue, neuropsychological functioning, and physical activity after treatment for breast carcinoma: daily self-report and objective behavior.

BACKGROUND: Previous research indicates that disease free breast carcinoma survivors who experienced severe fatigue also had many problems with regard to neuropsychological functioning and physical activity, measured with general self-report questionnaires. Both neuropsychological functioning and physical activity can be measured with daily self-report measures in addition to measures of objective behavior. The main objective of this study was to examine the relations between 1) fatigue and 2) daily self-reported and objective measures of neuropsychological functioning and physical activity.

Nebulised dornase alpha: adherence in adults with cystic fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: Dornase alpha improves sputum clearance and pulmonary function in patients with moderate bronchiectasis and cystic fibrosis (CF). Several studies have demonstrated variable adherence to treatment regimens in patients with CF. We aimed to compare self-reported adherence with computer based dispensing records of dornase alpha. METHOD: Direct interview of adherence to dornase alpha was compared with pharmacy-dispensing records during a 12-month period. The reasons for dornase alpha usage, and change in lung function in three groups of patients were compared (group 1 (n=42): positive
