Most drugs used in the treatment of malaria produce phototoxic side effects in both the skin and the eye. Cutaneous and ocular effects that may be caused by light include changes in skin pigmentation, corneal opacity, cataract formation and other visual disturbances including irreversible retinal damage (retinopathy) leading to blindness. Two hours after suicidal ingestion of an unknown amount of selenium dioxide, a 17-year-old male was admitted to hospital with asystolia and apnea. Attempts at resuscitation failed and the patient was pronounced dead. Findings at autopsy included congestion of lungs and kidneys, diffuse swelling of the heart, and brain edema. The most impressive finding was an orange-brown discoloration of the skin and all viscera, probably due to hemolysis and/or pigmentation related to ingestion of selenium dioxide. Selenium blood and tissue levels were increased by a factor of 100-1000 as compared to normal.

Although benign and atypical moles are considered key melanoma risk factors, previous studies of their influence were small and/or institution-based. We conducted a population-based case-control study in the state of New Hampshire. OBJECTIVE: Naevus density in children depends both on constitutional factors (see below) and on previous (solar) UV exposure, which is a well-known risk factor for malignant melanoma. Secular trends of childhood UV exposure - e. g., due to intervention programmes - can be monitored by repeated, standardised cross-sectional studies assessing naevus density in children.
