Psychomotor development of 4-year-old deaf children with cochlear implants: Three case studies.

OBJECTIVES: Hearing is one of our most important senses, and hearing ability has an enormous impact on a child's psychomotor development. Children with auditory perception disorders may show abnormal development in terms of speech, language, and communication skills, as well as other disorders involving the cognitive sphere, social-emotional interactions, and motor development. This paper describes different paths of psychomotor development in three 4-year-old children. All were born with bilateral profound sensorineural hearing loss and were implanted early on with a cochlear implant. A longi

NIMH during the tenure of Director Herbert Pardes, M.D. (1978-1984): The President's Commission on Mental Health and the reemergence of NIMH's scientific mission.

To summarize these 5-1/2 years, I would offer the following. NIMH--which, like the mental health field in general, has focused principally on services and broad social issues in the 1960s and 1970s--was modified to be a more scientific institute focused on basic biology and behavioral science, major clinical disorders, diagnosis, treatment, and epidemiology. NIMH in its entirety regained a high level of respect in the general NIH community and won increasing support from Congress and the Administration. Increasingly positive perceptions of NIMH may have had a positive effect on the recruitment

Association between county jail incarceration and cause-specific county mortality in the USA, 1987-2017: a retrospective, longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Mass incarceration has collateral consequences for community health, which are reflected in county-level health indicators, including county mortality rates. County jail incarceration rates are associated with all-cause mortality rates in the USA. We assessed the causes of death that drive the relationship between county-level jail incarceration and mortality. METHODS: In this retrospective, longitudinal study, we assessed the association between county-level jail incarceration rates and county-level cause-specific mortality using county jail incarceration data (1987-2017) for 109

Chemsex and Mental Health of Men Who Have Sex With Men in Germany.

Background: Chemsex is defined as using certain substances immediately before or during sexual activities to facilitate, prolong and/or intensify sexual experience, mainly by some communities of men who have sex with men (MSM). Four substances are typically associated with chemsex: methamphetamine, mephedrone, GHB/GBL, and ketamine. While there is a lot of evidence for increased prevalence of HIV, sexually transmitted infections and other sexual health measures among MSM, who engage in chemsex, there has been little research on mental health aspects. This study aims to describe aspects of ment

Socioeconomic Status Influences Functional Severity of Untreated Cerebral Palsy in Nepal: A Prospective Analysis and Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral palsy (CP) comprises a heterogeneous group of disorders whose clinical manifestations and epidemiologic characteristics vary across socioeconomic and geographic contexts. The functional severity of untreated CP in low-income countries has been insufficiently studied; a better understanding of how these children present for care in resource-constrained environments is important because it will better characterize the natural history of CP, guide clinical decision-making, and aid in the prognostication of children with untreated CP. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: The purposes of this

Effectiveness of intervention focused on vocational course vocabulary in post-16 students with (developmental) language disorder.

BACKGROUND: People with language disorders (including developmental language disorder-DLD) often struggle to learn new words and, for young adults, this could affect their success in future work. Therefore, it is crucial to support their learning of career-specific vocabulary. However, little published evidence exists regarding the effectiveness of speech and language intervention for older adolescents and young adults with (developmental) language disorder (D)LD within a post-16 provision. AIMS: To investigate whether for students with (D)LD in a post-16 environment, the addition of direct i

Study protocol for a randomized controlled trial of Regulating Together (RT), a group therapy for emotion dysregulation in school-age autistic youth and their caregivers.

BACKGROUND: Emotion dysregulation is a common concern in autistic youth. Growing evidence suggests emotion dysregulation underlies multiple co-occurring issues in autism, including externalizing (e.g., aggression, irritability) and internalizing (e.g., anxiety, depression) disorders, and thus may serve as a key transdiagnostic treatment target. Emotion dysregulation during middle childhood (8-12 years) is concurrently and longitudinally associated with social difficulties and poorer quality of life for autistic individuals, highlighting a key window for intervention. There is an urgent need fo

Fetal Tetra-Amelia Birth: A Case Report.

Fetal limb anomaly presentation varies greatly. It can present as amelia (complete absence of skeletal part of one or more limb), meromelia (partial absence of skeletal part of one or more limb), phocomelia (only rudimentary limb formed), and minor limb disorders like polydactyly. The complete absence of the four fetal limbs is extremely rare. Incidence of tetra-amelia is not well known, but it is mentioned to be 1-4 in 100,000 births in different literature. Etiopathogenesis of fetal tetra-amelia remains speculative. Tetra-amelia occurs either as tetra-amelia syndrome (when other organ system

The relationship between bullying and symptom presentation in first-episode psychosis.

Multiple recent studies have indicated that adverse psycho-traumatic experiences are particularly significant, if not the most significant, among the environmental factors that participate in the aetiology of schizophrenic spectrum disorders. The prevalence of bullying in the adolescent population has increased dramatically compared to earlier reports. This may be related to the recent development of communication technology and the use of social media, which have expanded the means by which bullying can be practiced. The present study aims to investigate the association between bullying victi

Lymphocytic Extracellular Signal-Regulated Kinase Dysregulation in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK1/2) is a conserved central intracellular signaling cascade involved in many aspects of neuronal development and plasticity. Converging evidence support investigation of ERK1/2 activity in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We previously reported enhanced baseline lymphocytic ERK1/2 activation in autism, and now we extend our work to investigate the early phase kinetics of lymphocytic ERK1/2 activation in idiopathic ASD. METHOD: Study participants included 67 individuals with ASD (3-25 years of age), 65 age- and sex-matched typical developing

Gymnastic-Based Movement Therapy for Children With Neurodevelopmental Disabilities: Results From a Pilot Feasibility Study.

Background: Developmental and behavioral issues often limit the participation of children with neurodevelopmental disabilities (NDD) in community-based activities with their peers, which decreases opportunities for their social learning and development. Parents of children with NDD seek out programs that address physical and psychosocial development. Several studies already support the positive effects for the child to attend physical activity programs (PAPs). However, these studies are highly prone to biases and Hawthorne effect. In the planning stage of a large prospective study to assess th

Intellectual disability in young people in custody in New South Wales, Australia - prevalence and markers.

BACKGROUND: Intellectual disability (ID) is known to be more common in incarcerated groups, especially incarcerated youth. Aboriginal young people have higher rates of ID, and make up half of all youth in juvenile custody in New South Wales (NSW), Australia. We aimed to describe the prevalence of possible ID and borderline intellectual functioning (BIF) in young people in NSW custody, and to describe the association between possible ID and Aboriginality after adjusting for the inequalities in social disadvantage. METHODS: Baseline study of all youth in NSW Custodial Centres between August and

Effects of autism on 30-year outcome of anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Long-term consequences of comorbid autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN) are inadequately investigated. METHODS: In the 1980s, 51 adolescent-onset AN cases (AN group) and 51 matched controls (COMP group) were recruited from the community. They have been examined on five occasions. The four last assessments included the Morgan-Russell Outcome Assessment Schedule (MROAS) to assess eating disorder outcomes (weight, dieting, menstruation), and related problems including psychiatric, psychosexual and socioeconomic state. In the present study, at age 4

Predictors of Current DSM-5 PTSD Diagnosis and Symptom Severity Among Deployed Veterans: Significance of Predisposition, Stress Exposure, and Genetics.

BACKGROUND: Previously we reported a genetic risk score significantly improved PTSD prediction among a trauma-exposed civilian population. In the current study, we sought to assess this prediction among a trauma-exposed military population. METHODS: We examined current PTSD diagnosis and PTSD symptom severity among a random sample of 1042 community-based US military veterans. Main effects and interaction effects were assessed for PTSD genetic risk by trauma exposure using cross-product terms for PTSD x trauma exposures, including combat, lifetime trauma, and adverse childhood exposures.
