Key Mediators Reducing Socioeconomic Inequality in Early Childhood Caries.

OBJECTIVES: Socioeconomic status (SES) has a significant effect on the burden of early childhood caries (ECC), yet addressing SES disparities remains challenging. This study aimed to identify and quantify the most impactful mediator linking SES effect to the occurrence of ECC using advanced causal mediation analysis, to inform targeted interventions that reduce SES-related disparities in ECC. METHODS: Data were drawn from the Study of Mothers' and Infants' Life Events, a cohort of 2,182 mother-child dyads recruited from Adelaide's 3 largest public hospitals (2013-2014). Baseline questionnaire

Evaluating the Vascular Quality Initiative's role in advancing minority health and health disparities research-A scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Social and structural determinants of health (SDOH) significantly influence the management and outcomes of vascular surgical patients. Large databases, such as the Society for Vascular Surgery-Vascular Quality Initiative (SVS-VQI), are important platforms for conducting health disparities research. Moreover, evaluating the SVS-VQI registry variables is crucial to understanding how well it supports this purpose. This study reviews the extent to which current VQI variables facilitate minority health and health disparities research. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted from VQI

Gender Differences in Social Determinants of Hypertension Among Older Brazilian Adults Residing in Urban Areas: A Multilevel Approach from the ELSI-Urbe.

Despite growing interest in the social determinants of hypertension, nationally representative studies examining intra-urban effects of individual and contextual socioeconomic conditions within unequal urban areas, such as those in Latin America, remain scarce. This study describes gender disparities in the association of individual and contextual socioeconomic conditions with hypertension among older adults residing in urban areas of Brazil. We analyzed data from 6,767 participants from the baseline (2015-2016) of the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Aging (ELSI-Brazil), a nationally represent

Increased mortality in socioeconomic disadvantaged municipalities during the first phase of the COVID-19 pandemic in Lombardy region.

BACKGROUND: Lombardy was the first European region most severely affected by the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic in the spring of 2020. During that period, a substantial increase in socioeconomic inequality in total mortality was observed. This study aims to evaluate mortality data in the region up to September 2023 to verify whether the increased disparities between the poorest and the wealthiest municipalities persisted in the subsequent phases of the pandemic. METHODS: This study analyzed mortality data from January 2019 to September 2023 in Lombardy's municipalities by month and pandemi

Well-being domains in U.S. military veterans: identifying modifiable factors to promote whole health.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is actively transitioning away from a disease-centric model of healthcare to one that prioritizes disease prevention and the promotion of overall health and well-being. Described as Whole Health, this initiative aims to provide personalized, values-centered care that optimizes physical, behavioral, spiritual, and socioeconomic well-being. To inform this initiative, we analyzed cross-sectional data from a nationally representative sample of primarily older U.S. military veterans to estimate levels of well-being across these domains, and identify sociodemo

Racial and economic segregation and diabetes mortality in the USA, 2016-2020.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to examine the association between racial and economic segregation and diabetes mortality among US counties from 2016 to 2020. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional ecological study that combined county-level diabetes mortality data from the National Vital Statistics System and sociodemographic information drawn from the 2016-2020 American Community Survey (n=2380 counties in the USA). Racialized economic segregation was measured using the Index Concentration at the Extremes (ICE) for income (ICEincome), race (ICErace) and combined income and race (

A Technology-Based Intervention Impacts Quality of Life for Low-Income Older Adults by Reducing Loneliness and Improving Healthcare Self-Efficacy and Self-Rated Health.

This paper describes a technology program aimed at developing technical skills and confidence, reducing social isolation and loneliness, and increasing healthcare self-management and self-efficacy among older adults. We conducted a mixed-methods study using surveys collected at baseline and 12 months from 90 older adults. Focus group data (n = 7) collected at 12 months were examined for convergence with key quantitative outcomes, emergent value-related themes, and evaluation of program structure and staff. Outcome data showed improvements in loneliness (Cohen's d = -0.24, p = .004) (validated

Biopsychosocial Factors Associated with Activities of Daily Living Limitations in Chronic Kidney Disease Patients: Insights from the Brazilian Population.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) can impair activities of daily living (ADL), reducing quality of life. The influence of biopsychosocial factors on ADL limitations among CKD patients remains unclear. This study aims to investigate associations between these factors and ADL limitations among CKD patients in the Brazilian population. We analyzed data from 839 individuals diagnosed with CKD obtained from the National Health Survey. The outcome was the presence or absence of limitations in ADL caused by CKD. Biopsychosocial factors included clinical and health status, self-perceived behavior, contextu

Examining the Latent Dimensions of Social Anxiety Disorder.

While the body of literature has investigated the latent dimensions of Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD), only few have directly anchored in the DSM-5 SAD symptoms. Similarly, a continuing issue on measuring mental health disorders pertains to whether a symptom's frequency, intensity, or both, are appropriate and sufficient indicators of severity. To address this gap, the present study developed and validated a DSM-5-based measurement tool, the Social Anxiety Symptom Severity Inventory (SASSI), which assesses both the intensity (intensity of disturbance) and frequency (frequency of occurrence) of

Casting a Health Equity Lens on Endocrinology and Diabetes.

As endocrinologists we have focused on biological contributors to disparities in diabetes, obesity and other endocrine disorders. Given that diabetes is an exemplar health disparity condition, we, as a specialty, are also positioned to view the contributing factors and solutions more broadly. This will give us agency in contributing to health system, public health, and policy-level interventions to address the structural and institutional racism embedded in our medical and social systems. A history of unconsented medical and research experimentation on vulnerable groups and perpetuation of eug

Cognitive and brain development is independently influenced by socioeconomic status and polygenic scores for educational attainment.

Genetic factors and socioeconomic status (SES) inequalities play a large role in educational attainment, and both have been associated with variations in brain structure and cognition. However, genetics and SES are correlated, and no prior study has assessed their neural associations independently. Here we used a polygenic score for educational attainment (EduYears-PGS), as well as SES, in a longitudinal study of 551 adolescents to tease apart genetic and environmental associations with brain development and cognition. Subjects received a structural MRI scan at ages 14 and 19. At both time poi

Emotion Identification in Preschool and Early Adolescent Body Mass Index: Exploring the Roles of Depressive Symptoms and Peer Relations.

The ability to identify and label emotions may represent an early-life risk factor that relates to excess weight gain during childhood. The current study investigates the relationships between preschool emotion identification and early adolescent body mass index (BMI), as well as the mediating role of two variables: depressive symptoms and peer relations. In a longitudinal study, preschoolers completed an emotion identification task, and parents completed psychiatric assessments and a peer-relations questionnaire about their child. BMI percentile was measured at later time points in early adol

Testing adults by questionnaire for social and communication disorders, including autism spectrum disorders, in an adult mental health service population.

OBJECTIVES: Autism is difficult to identify in adults due to lack of validated self-report questionnaires. We compared the effectiveness of the autism-spectrum quotient (AQ) and the Ritvo autism-Asperger's diagnostic scale-revised (RAADS-R) questionnaires in adult mental health services in two English counties. METHODS: A subsample of adults who completed the AQ and RAADS-R were invited to take part in an autism diagnostic observation schedule (ADOS Module 4) assessment with probability of selection weighted by scores on the questionnaires. RESULTS: There were 364 men and 374 women who conse

Lower socioeconomic status is associated with an increased prevalence of comorbid anxiety and depression among patients with irritable bowel syndrome: results from a multicenter cohort.

Background/Aims: Anxiety and depression are common comorbid psychiatric disorders in IBS patients, but the population-level determinants influencing these comorbidities in IBS patients are poorly understood. We sought to determine whether there was an association between comorbid affective disorders and socioeconomic status among irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients. Methods: We assembled a retrospective cohort of 1074 IBS patients with comorbid Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and/or Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) seen at two tertiary referral centers between 2007 and 2015.
