Osteoplastic Reconstruction of Post-enucleatic Microorbitalism.

BACKGROUND: Patients who have undergone enucleation during infancy due to retinoblastoma can develop microorbitalism due to the decreased growth stimulation from the eyeball and the surrounding soft tissues. Anatomically, the orbit consist of parts of the frontal bone superiorly, the maxilla inferiorly, the ethmoid bone medially, and the zygoma laterally. Considering the possibility of surgically expanding the orbit using tripod osteotomy, in this study we conducted tripod osteotomy on adult patients with microorbitalism of retinoblastoma. METHODS: Tripod osteotomy was conducted to expand the

Lumbar spinal stenosis induced by rare chronic tophaceous gout in a 29-year-old man.

Spinal gout is rare in patients younger than 45 years, occurring most commonly between ages 45 and 80 years. This article describes a 29-year-old man with a history of gout initially observed more than 20 years previously who presented with lower back pain and left lower limb weakness. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed severely damaged facet joints and laminae surrounding L4-S1, and materials with a granular, yellow, cheese-like appearance were observed under direct vision. Postoperative histological examination confirmed spinal gout. Complete posterior decompression

Computed tomography for detecting coronary artery plaques: a meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: CT is a novel noninvasive test for detection and analysis of coronary artery plaques. However, the ability of CT to detect and quantify coronary atherosclerotic plaque in vivo has never been systematically validated. We sought to conduct a meta-analysis to evaluate the accuracy of Computed tomography (CT) in detecting coronary artery plaques. METHODS: We systematically searched the literature to identify reports published from 1966 up to January 2011 in Pubmed and EMBASE that described studies comparing CT and intravascular ultrasound (IVUS), the reference standard, in assessing c

Three-dimensional analysis and treatment planning of hemimandibular hyperplasia.

INTRODUCTION: The advent of computed tomography (CT) provided a useful instrument for diagnosis and surgical treatment of patients with craniofacial malformations. The development of software for three-dimensional graphic simulation applied to CT scan has made possible the three-dimensional computerized analysis, surgical planning, and simulation. This kind of analysis is particularly useful in case of complex facial malformations, making reliable a surgical treatment in 1 step. The purpose of this report was to present the diagnosis and treatment planning on a patient with hemimandibular hype

Excision of a congenital laryngeal cyst in a five-month-old dog via a lateral extraluminal approach.

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 5-month-old neutered male Golden Retriever was evaluated because of moderate stridor, exercise intolerance, and dyspnea. The dog had been neutered 3 weeks previously, and the referring veterinarian identified a large fluid-filled swelling on the left lateral aspect of the larynx during anesthetic intubation for that surgery. The referring veterinarian drained fluid from the mass by use of needle centesis via the oral cavity, which resulted in temporary improvement in clinical signs; however, the clinical signs returned soon thereafter. CLINICAL FINDINGS: A large, soft, sph

A case of a mesenteric cyst in the sigmoid colon of a 3-year-old girl.

Mesenteric cysts are rare. In this paper we present a case of a mesenteric cyst in the sigmoid colon of a 3-year-old girl. On the first visit to our department, a smooth-surfaced soft mass approximately 15 cm in diameter was noticed in the right lower abdomen. Although the patient complained of lower abdominal pain, there was no tenderness or guarding. Laboratory tests indicated no abnormality except a slightly increased level of C-reactive protein (2.3 mg/dL). A plain abdominal X-ray film revealed displacement of colonic gas from the right lower abdomen, and abdominal ultrasonography and comp

Bilateral orbital and nasal aspergillosis in a cat.

A 12-year-old, 4 kg, castrated male Persian cat was referred with a 2-month history of sneezing and bilateral mucopurulent nasal discharge. Rhinoscopically acquired nasal biopsies at this time revealed bilateral lymphoplasmacytic rhinitis. A tapering dose of oral prednisone caused the complete remission of the clinical signs, but 2 months after discontinuation of the therapy, the rhinitis recurred and the OD became exophthalmic. Computed tomography showed a soft tissue mass in both sides of the nasal cavity, both frontal sinuses, the right orbit, and to a lesser extent the left orbit. A fine n

Foot or hand malformations related to deep venous system anomalies of the lower limb in Klippel-Trénaunay syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Klippel-Trénaunay syndrome (KTS) is a capillary-lymphatic-venous malformation associated with soft tissue and skeletal hypertrophy of one or more limbs. Deep venous system (DVS) anomalies are reported to be present in 8% to 18% of patients with KTS; approximately 25% of patients with KTS have hand or foot malformations. OBJECTIVE: We sought to assess whether the presence of hand or foot malformations in KTS is a predictor of DVS anomalies. METHODS: Retrospective data were collected from 51 consecutive patients with KTS seen in a university hospital between January 2000 and Februa

Gingival metastasis from ovarian mucinous cystadenocarcinoma as an initial manifestation (a rare case report).

The metastasis of malignant tumors to the oral cavity remains a rare clinical entity. Most metastatic tumors have the propensity for involving the mandible rather than the oral soft tissues. Herein, we describe an unusual case of ovarian mucinous cystadenocarcinoma that metastasized to the mandibular gingiva as an initial manifestation. There is little information regarding metastatic ovarian cancer to the oral cavity. A patient was a 54-year-old woman who developed the paresthesia and swelling of the right mandible after tooth extraction. A pantomograph revealed an osteolytic lesion in the ri

Bone augmentation techniques.

BACKGROUND: The advent of osseointegration and advances in biomaterials and techniques have contributed to increased application of dental implants in the restoration of partial and completely edentulous patients. Often, in these patients, soft and hard tissue defects result from a variety of causes, such as infection, trauma, and tooth loss. These create an anatomically less favorable foundation for ideal implant placement. For prosthetic-driven dental implant therapy, reconstruction of the alveolar bone through a variety of regenerative surgical procedures has become predictable; it may be n
