Jerzy Kaulbersz was undoubtedly the father of experimental gastroenterological physiology in Poland. He pioneered the neural and endocrine aspects of the mechanisms controlling gastric and pancreatic secretion by assessing the influence on this secretion of vagal nerves and endocrine factors such as gastrin, enterogastrone, urogastrone, pituitary, adrenal, thyroid and sex hormones as well as bile, hypoxia and X-ray irradiation. He introduced various models of peptic ulcerations such as induced by pylorus-ligation (Shay ulcers) or Mann-Williamson ulcers to test the influence of neuroendocrine f

For more than 20 years, two courses, History, Education, and Guidance of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing and Introduction to Instructional Methods for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing, have been taught at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania using a traditional lecture format. A state grant provided funding to explore the use of technology to teach online courses to college-age learners who are deaf, hard of hearing, or hearing. Saba Centra software was used as the online tool for the synchronous presentation of course content, which included PowerPoint lecture material, text chat opportunities, sign langua

The experience of music is difficult to study objectively. Here we describe a detailed analysis of musical hallucinations developing after a probable brainstem stroke in an 83 year old musician who was able to describe and notate the hallucinations. The hallucinations comprised simple, repetitive melodic and rhythmic motifs that were combined apparently randomly without definite tonality, large-scale structure, or timbre. This observation is consistent with the proposal that musical hallucinations represent abnormal spontaneous activity in auditory cortical areas beyond the primary auditory co

The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) is a commonly used clinical tool for evaluating the cognitive aspects of mental function. In this study, 40 consecutive patients presenting to a memory disorder clinic and their caregivers were evaluated for coaching of the patient with respect to MMSE content over the 24 hours prior to clinical evaluation. Caregivers completed a questionnaire concerning MMSE practice sessions with the patient prior to the physician encounter; then, the patients were asked to spell the word "WORM" backwards instead of "WORLD" during the MMSE test. Some or all of the MMS

The goal of this study is to analyze and evaluate the effectiveness of a voice-training program. Twenty-three professional voice users received voice training for 2 years and vocal hygiene education for 1 year. The voice-training program consisted of lectures, technical workshops, and vocal coaching. The European Laryngological Society (ELS) protocol, including the Dysphonia Severity Index (DSI) and the Voice Handicap Index (VHI), was applied before and after, respectively, 9 and 18 months of voice training. A questionnaire on daily habits was presented at study onset and after 18 months. The

Training workshops have been considered a useful intervention in helping family caregivers of people with dementia to cope with the stress of caregiving. However, there are no reports in the literature with regard to training and support of families specifically looking after individuals who are in the late stage of dementia. This paper reports the experience and evaluation of a training workshop aimed at preparing family caregivers for late-stage dementia care. Eighty-eight percent of the participants completed the client satisfaction questionnaire. The results from the questionnaire gave a v

Patient images are used for many purposes in medical practice. They are placed in the medical record as an adjunct to clinical care, displayed to colleagues, students and other audiences in educational settings, and published in medical journals or other media as part of medical research. In each case it is not only prudent, but necessary for the patients’ protection and interest that appropriate consent be obtained. While medical journals invariably require written consent for photographs that may identify the patient, the format of the photograph consent form is usually not specified, nor is

The shoulder is a very complex joint that is crucial to many activities of daily living. Decreased shoulder mobility is a serious clinical finding. A global decrease in shoulder range of motion is called adhesive capsulitis, referring to the actual adherence of the shoulder capsule to the humeral head. Adhesive capsulitis is a syndrome defined as idiopathic restriction of shoulder movement that is usually painful at onset. Secondary causes include alteration of the supporting structures of and around the shoulder, and autoimmune, endocrine or other systemic diseases. The three defined stages o

Smoking rates among persons with a history of alcohol abuse are triple that of the general public. Strong evidence indicates that the risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease is higher in recovering alcoholics than in peers who smoke, but do not drink alcohol. Yet these persons often receive less than optimal tobacco counseling out of fear that attempts at smoking cessation will jeopardize their sobriety. Recent research, however, does not support this belief; rather, it suggests that smoking cessation may actually enhance alcohol abstinence. A model for more effective counseling of smokers i

It is well known the vocal pathology occurs more frequently in professionals using their voice than in the general population. Teachers form a particular group. We performed a study on 1.046 teachers in 1993 to quantify the percentage presenting a visible organic lesion of the vocal cords. We sent out a questionnaire on dysphonia and the professional vocal activity practised, and we performed a laryngeal examination with video-laryngo-stroboscopy. The results obtained evidence 218 cases of pathological exploration, i.e. 20.84% with a predominance of vocal nodules (43%) and Reinke oedema (18%).

A radiology consultation service, consisting of an attending radiologist and a senior radiology resident, functioned for ten months on an acute care medical ward in a teaching hospital. The consultants conducted daily conferences during which they discussed, approved, and scheduled all imaging tests. During the study interval, there were significantly fewer procedures performed on patients in the consultation ward than were performed on patients in three other medical wards of the hospital. The service was well accepted by the medical staff. Early and sustained participation by a radiologist w…

The Teacher Approval-Disapproval Scale was administered to three groups of elementary school boys: those considered by a teacher as hyperactive and referrable; those considered as among the most active but not referrable; and normoactive classmates. The three groups of boys differed significantly in their responses to 8 of 11 individual scale items, which ask the child about the amount of teacher approval and disapproval directed toward himself personally or about the frequency of his own happiness and unhappiness in the classroom. The three groups of boys differed significantly on only 2 of 1
