Three cortical stages of colour processing in the human brain.

We used the technique of functional magnetic resonance imaging to chart the colour pathways in the human brain beyond V4. We asked subjects to view objects that were dressed in natural and unnatural colours as well as their achromatic counterparts and compared the activity produced in the brain by each condition. The results showed that both naturally and unnaturally coloured objects activate a pathway extending from V1 to V4, though not overlapping totally the activity produced by viewing abstract coloured Mondrian scenes. Normally coloured objects activated, in addition, more anterior parts

Prosopagnosia: face blindness and its association with neurological disorders.

Loss of facial recognition or prosopagnosia has been well-recognized for over a century. It has been categorized as developmental or acquire … rome, delirium, hypoxic encephalopathy and ischaemic infarcts. On [18F] fluorodeoxyglucose-PET, the temporal lobes proved to be the most frequently affected regions in 117 patients with degenerative prosopagnosia, while in 82 patients with non-degenerative prosopagnosia, MRI revealed the right temporal and right occipital lobes as most affected by a focal lesio …

The Resting State of Taiwan EEG Normative Database: Z-Scores of Patients with Major Depressive Disorder as the Cross-Validation.

This study referred to the standard of electroencephalography (EEG) collection of normative databases and collected the Taiwan normative database to examine the reliability and validation of the Taiwan EEG normative database. We included 260 healthy participants and divided them into five groups in 10-year age-group segments and calculated the EEG means, standard deviation, and z-scores. Internal consistency reliability was verified at different frequencies between the three electrode locations in the Taiwan normative database. We recruited 221 major depressive disorder (MDD) patients for cros

Modulation of Spectral Representation and Connectivity Patterns in Response to Visual Narrative in the Human Brain.

The regional brain networks and the underlying neurophysiological mechanisms subserving the cognition of visual narrative in humans have lar … om multiple fables presented in "scrambled" order. Broadband activity mainly within the frontal and temporal lobes were found to encode if a presented image is part of a visual narrative (sequential) or random image set (scrambled). Moreover, the temporal lobe exhibits strong activation in response to visual narratives while the frontal lobe is more engaged whe …

Association of cognitive function and hypoperfusion in Moyamoya disease patients without stroke.

The influence of hypoperfusion on cognition in patients with Moyamoya disease (MMD) is unclear. This study investigated cognitive function c … lated with cerebral blood flow (CBF) in the bilateral lateral frontal lobes, centrum semiovale, and temporal lobes. The TMT-A and CAVLT scores significantly correlated with CBF in the left centrum semiovale (L-CSO) and temporal lobes. According to the BSR results, age, education, white matter lesions, and hypoperfusion of the L-CSO were risk factors for cogniti …

Attentional processes in typically developing children as revealed using brain event-related potentials and their source localization in Attention Network Test.

Attention-related processes include three functional sub-components: alerting, orienting, and inhibition. We investigated these components u … the occipital lobe, and for the inhibition effect in the medial prefrontal cortex and left anterior temporal lobe. Neuronal sources of ERPs revealed that sub-processes related to the attention network are different in children as compared to earlier adult fMRI studies, which was not evident from scalp ERPs.

[The changes in cognitive impairment in patients with epilepsy during the disease course (on example of executive functions)].

AIM: To identify the relationship between executive functions (EF), personality traits and clinical characteristics of disease course. MATERIAL AND METHODS: One hundred and five patients with partial epilepsy, including temporal lobe epilepsy (61%), lobe epilepsy (33%) and other forms (6%), were examined. Mean age of the patients was 30.24±8,67 years. EF were studied using the the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) in 25 out of 105 patients of the main group. The patients were followed-up after 5.5 years. RESULTS: Correlations between the EF decline and the age, illness duration and disabili…

Auditory hallucinations: A review of the ERC "VOICE" project.

In this invited review I provide a selective overview of recent research on brain mechanisms and cognitive processes involved in auditory hallucinations. The review is focused on research carried out in the "VOICE" ERC Advanced Grant Project, funded by the European Research Council, but I also review and discuss the literature in general. Auditory hallucinations are suggested to be perceptual phenomena, with a neuronal origin in the speech perception areas in the temporal lobe. The phenomenology of auditory hallucinations is conceptualized along three domains, or dimensions; a perceptual dimen…

[A case of MELAS presenting complex partial status epilepticus].

We reported a 37-year-old man who presented complex partial status epilepticus as the initial symptom of mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes (MELAS). He showed fluctuating consciousness disturbance, left homonymous hemianopsia, and paroxysmal conjugated eye deviation to the left. The lactic acid level was elevated in blood and CSF, and ragged-red fibers were observed in the biopsied muscle. MRI demonstrated T2-prolonged lesions in the right occipito-parieto-temporal lobes. Since a mutation of mitochondrial DNA (A3243G) was identified, he was diagnosed as …

Distinct frontal regions for processing sentence syntax and story grammar.

Time is a fundamental dimension of cognition. It is expressed in the sequential ordering of individual elements in a wide variety of activities such as language, motor control or in the broader domain of long range goal-directed actions. Several studies have shown the importance of the frontal lobes in sequencing information. The question addressed in this study is whether this brain region hosts a single supramodal sequence processor, or whether separate mechanisms are required for different kinds of temporally organised knowledge structures such as syntax and action knowledge. Here we show t

Left Temporal Pole Encephalocele With Independent Hippocampal Seizures: Surgical Strategy and Relevance of Epileptic Biomarkers.

Temporal pole encephalocele (TE) is an increasingly recognized surgically treatable subtype of refractory temporal lobe epilepsy that rarely shows hippocampal involvement. A 27-year-old patient presented with medically intractable epilepsy because of a left temporal pole encephalocele with a normal hippocampus on MRI. Extraoperative electrocorticography showed independent seizure onset with distinct morphology of seizure onset pattern from the temporal pole encephalocele and hippocampus. Additional analysis of ictal and interictal fast ripples revealed different electrophysiological fast rippl…

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy in elderly patients with four types of dementia.

BACKGROUND: Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is commonly used to study human brain function by measuring the hemodynamic signals originating from cortical activation and provides a new noninvasive detection method for identifying dementia. Visual Selective Attention P300 Source in Frontal-Parietal Lobe: ERP and fMRI Study.

Visual selective attention can be achieved into bottom-up and top-down attention. Different selective attention tasks involve different attention control ways. The pop-out task requires more bottom-up attention, whereas the search task involves more top-down attention. P300, which is the positive potential generated by the brain in the latency of 300 ~ 600 ms after stimulus, reflects the processing of attention. There is no consensus on the P300 source. The aim of present study is to study the source of P300 elicited by different visual selective attention. We collected thirteen participants'
