[Analysis of modified laterally positioned flap].

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the covering of denuded root surfaces by the use of modified laterally positioned flap (MLPF) and application of supersaturated citric acid of pH 1. The following measurements were carried out: the width of attached gingiva, attachment of epithelium level, gingival recession, and plaque and gingival indices. The surface area of the exposed root was also measured. All measurements were made before MLPF and one, three, six and twelve months after the treatment. The average surface area of the gingival recession before surgery was 15.75 mm2

Coverage of the denuded root surface using the free soft tissue autograft.

This paper presents a new soft tissue graft technique that allows the surgeon not only to increase the zone of attached gingiva, but also to cover previously denuded root surfaces. Predictability of the procedure is discussed and the results are related to the health of the periodontium and to the patient's self-image.

Cervical necrotizing fasciitis: an uncommon sequela to dental infection.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a soft-tissue infection, usually polymicrobial, that causes necrosis of fascia and subcutaneous tissue while sparing skin and muscle. Although it more commonly involves the groin, abdomen, and extremities, it may also occur in the head and neck, usually secondary to dental infection. We report a case of cervical necrotizing fasciitis arising from a dental infection and review the cause, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of this potentially lethal entity. Early detection and interventions is emphasized. Extensive surgical debridement remains the mainstay of trea

Root coverage and ridge augmentation in Class IV recession using a coronally positioned free gingival graft.

Although root coverage is not anticipated in Class IV recession, occasionally this can be accomplished if there is an edentulous area adjacent to the tooth to be grafted. This edentulous area allows the surgeon to more intimately adapt the graft to the interproximal surface of the root. A second procedure to coronally position the healed graft may be required. A case demonstrating this technique is presented.

Hereditary hypophosphatemia rickets: an important awareness for dentists.

Because X-linked hypophosphatemia VDRR is reported to be the most common form of rickets in the United States today, it is important for dentists to be aware of this condition. Characteristic dental findings are often the first clinically noticeable signs of the disease. The confirmation of hypophosphatemia with dental findings will permit early diagnosis and prevent crippling rachitic deformities, otherwise certain to follow. Reports in the literature confirm the validity of conservative, prophylactic full coverage restorations in patients with VDRR.

Infected total hip arthroplasty due to Actinomyces israelii after dental extraction. A case report.

Late infection of a total hip arthroplasty after dental extraction has been reported, but never with an organism that is found exclusively in mouth flora. Actinomyces israelii is an organism responsible for dental caries. A 61-year-old woman developed an infected total hip arthroplasty after dental work. She denies ever being instructed to take prophylactic antibiotics by her orthopedic surgeon, by her internist, or by her dentist. Considering the extensive morbidity and potential mortality of an infected hip prosthesis, it is essential that all physicians are aware of the indications for anti

A modification of the pedicle graft in the treatment of gingival recession.

Presented in this article is a technique in which vertical releasing incisions are used to modify the basic pedicle graft procedure in the treatment of localized gingival recession. Criteria for the selection of a proper donor site are discussed, and the rationale for its use is explained. Two case reports are included to demonstrate the use of the procedure.

Oral symptoms in histiocytosis X.

Histiocytosis X, a term comprising three well-known disease complexes, may have dental mobility as a prodromal or major symptom. In each of three patients described, an oral finding predated the other symptoms. The earliest symptom in one patient was loosened teeth; in another, periodontosis-like symptoms were documented ten years before the patient's report of pelvic pain which led to a diagnosis of eosinophilic granuloma; in the third patient, premature eruption of the primary teeth the gingival bleeding was the prodromal symptom. The clinician should understand the significance of each find

Actinomycotic granuloma of the Gasserian ganglion with primary site in a dental root. Case report.

An unusual case of cerebral actinomycosis of the Gasserian ganglion is reported. The location and the pathological diagnosis of granuloma are both extremely rare. The literature is briefly reviewed with special reference to similar reports. The manner of spread and the course of the disease are described. The present case tends to confirm the opinion that primary cerebral actinomycosis is extremely rare and probably does not exist. The case also definitely indicates that the organism reaches the central nervous system by way of nerve or perineural pathways.

Bilateral dens invaginatus with associated radicular cysts. A case report.

A case report is presented describing bilateral dens invaginatus of the maxillary lateral incisors. Pulpal disease of the lateral incisors resulted in radicular cysts with the right cyst expanding to cause the eventual loss of four teeth. Removal of the cysts was followed by normal healing. Early detection of the bilateral dens invaginatus might well have resulted in successful interceptive care.

Dens in dente: an unusual sequela. Abbreviated case report.

Dens in dente is the result of an invagination of the enamel organ into the developing dental papilla. The full pathologic potential of this lesion is often not fully appreciated. A case is reported in which a cyst resulting from a dens in dente obliterated the maxillary sinus and necessitated root canal therapy and apicoectomies in four adjacent teeth.

Periodontal considerations in operative dentistry.

Periodontal and preventive considerations, other marginal fit and occlusion, are discussed as they relate to the fabrication of restorations in operative dentistry. The development of buccal, lingual, proximal, and transitional line contours is presented as related to maintenance of healthy periodontal tissues. Proximal contacts and marginal ridge relationships are related to food retention and arch integrity. The gingival attachment is described, as it determines certain techniques of tooth preparation and impression making.

Cervico-facial and intra-oral actinomycosis: a 5-year retrospective study.

Actinomycosis is often considered to be a rare disease in the oral region. A retrospective study of the Routine Diagnostic Services in Glasgow Dental Hospital revealed 39 cases in which actinomyces were detected, indicating that this organism is not infrequent in oral infections and may be seen in a variety of lesions.
