BACKGROUND: Bile duct injuries during laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) are thought to occur because surgeons tend to confuse the common bile duct (CBD) with the cystic duct. Among reasons for this misidentification, the difference in the way the operating field is exposed in LC compared to open cholecystectomy should be noticed. Using Dr. Reddick's technique, which is commonly practiced, the upward and the lateral traction of the gallbladder results in a narrower Calot's triangle and angulation of the CBD. These anatomical distortions are thought to contribute to ductal injuries during LC.

PURPOSE: We studied the results and complications of silicone oil removal applying basic criteria for the selection of eyes.
METHODS: The criteria for oil removal: 1. Completely attached retina for at least 4 weeks, 2. Absence of tractions and active proliferations, 3. Preoperative vision > 0.01. The oil was removed from 90 of 261 oil filled eyes (removal rate: 34.5%). 83 eyes were included in the further study.

In a retrospective study of 41 subtrochanteric fractures treated with Zickel intramedullary nails (with a follow-up period of at least 1 year) there was a union rate of 100 per cent (39/39). Union occurred between 4 and 7 months (average healing time 5.2 months). There were no implant failures. Four patients have had their Zickel nails successfully removed. We reviewed complete ocular and systemic necropsy findings of 10 consecutive children who died of suspected child abuse. All 10 children had evidence at necropsy of blunt head trauma, although external signs of blunt trauma occasionally were covert. Ocular injuries were observed in 7 of the 10 cases and when present always included retinal, vitreous, and subdural optic nerve hemorrhages.
