Disentangling the Complexity of Nutrition, Frailty and Gut Microbial Pathways during Aging: A Focus on Hippuric Acid.

Hippuric acid (HA) is a metabolite resulting from the hepatic glycine conjugation of benzoic acid (BA) or from the gut bacterial metabolism of phenylalanine. BA is generally produced by gut microbial metabolic pathways after the ingestion of foods of vegetal origin rich in polyphenolic compounds, namely, chlorogenic acids or epicatechins. It can also be present in foods, either naturally or artificially added as a preservative. The plasma and urine HA levels have been used in nutritional research for estimating the habitual fruit and vegetable intake, especially in children and in patients wit

Research on the purification enhancement of ecological ponds: Integrating water cycle optimization and plants layout.

The hydrodynamic conditions of ponds are generally poor, which seriously affects the long-term water quality guarantee. In this research, the numerical simulation method was used to establish an integrated model of hydrodynamics and water quality for the simulation of the plant purification effect in ponds. Based on the flushing time using the tracer method, the purification rate of plants was introduced to consider the purification effect of plants on water quality. In-situ monitoring was carried out at the Luxihe pond in Chengdu, and the model parameters such as the purification rate of typi

Detection of Rickettsia spp. in Animals and Ticks in Midwestern Brazil, Where Human Cases of Rickettsiosis Were Reported.

Brazilian spotted fever (BSF) is the most important tick-borne diseases affecting humans in Brazil. Cases of BSF have recently been reported in the Goiás state, midwestern Brazil. All cases have been confirmed by reference laboratories by seroconversion to Rickettsia rickettsii antigens. Because serological cross-reactions among different rickettsial species that belong to the spotted fever group (SFG) are common, the agent responsible for BSF cases in Goiás remains unknown. From March 2020 to April 2022, ticks and plasma were collected from dogs, horses and capybaras (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeri

Shade triggers posttranscriptional PHYTOCHROME-INTERACTING FACTOR-dependent increases in H3K4 trimethylation.

The phytochrome (phy)-PHYTOCHROME-INTERACTING FACTOR (PIF) sensory module perceives and transduces light signals to direct target genes (DTGs), which then drive the adaptational responses in plant growth and development appropriate to the prevailing environment. These signals include the first exposure of etiolated seedlings to sunlight upon emergence from subterranean darkness and the change in color of the light that is filtered through, or reflected from, neighboring vegetation ("shade"). Previously, we identified three broad categories of rapidly signal-responsive genes: those repressed by

An inner filter effect-based nitrogen-doped carbon dots-CoOOH nanoflakes fluorescence probe for detection of ascorbic acid by chemical redox modulation.

BACKGROUND: Ascorbic acid (AA) is an essential nutrient for humans, which must be obtained from vegetables, fruits, and other foods. The content of AA has become an important standard to evaluate the quality and nutritional value of food. The fluorescence sensing method based on nanomaterials is a good alternative for the rapid detection of AA. In this study, we developed an inner filter effect-based fluorescent probe that hybridized nitrogen-doped carbon dots (NCDs) with cobalt oxyhydroxide nanoflakes (CoOOH NFs). RESULTS: An optimal NCDs was successfully selected because it has a strong flu…

Fulminant infectious endocarditis caused by Staphylococcus aureus with pseudoaneurysms in the superior mesenteric, hepatic, and popliteal arteries: a case report.

Staphylococcus aureus infectious endocarditis has a high mortality, major causes of death being cardiac failure, systemic embolism, and sepsis. Pseudoaneurysms, a rare complication of this infection, are not invariably fatal with appropriate treatment. A previously healthy 32-year-old man was found to have multiple cerebral infarctions, and infectious endocarditis with mitral valve vegetation was diagnosed by echocardiography. Because methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) was identified from blood cultures, vancomycin was administered. Massive intracerebral hemorrhage in the left

Seasonality and Ecological Suitability Modelling for Anthrax (Bacillus anthracis) in Western Africa.

Anthrax is hyper-endemic in West Africa affecting wildlife, livestock and humans. Prediction is difficult due to the lack of accurate outbreak data. However, predicting the risk of infection is important for public health, wildlife conservation and livestock economies. In this study, the seasonality of anthrax outbreaks in West Africa was investigated using climate time series and ecological niche modeling to identify environmental factors related to anthrax occurrence, develop geospatial risk maps and identify seasonal patterns. Outbreak data in livestock, wildlife and humans between 2010 and

Micropropagation of Ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) 'Bentong' and Evaluation of Its Secondary Metabolites and Antioxidant Activities Compared with the Conventionally Propagated Plant.

'Bentong' ginger is the most popular variety of Zingiber officinale in Malaysia. It is vegetatively propagated and requires a high proportion of rhizomes as starting planting materials. Besides, ginger vegetative propagation using its rhizomes is accompanied by several types of soil-borne diseases. Plant tissue culture techniques have been applied in many plant species to produce their disease-free planting materials. As 'Bentong' ginger is less known for its micropropagation, this study was conducted to investigate the effects of Clorox (5.25% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl)) on explant surface s

The influence of acute water stresses on the biochemical composition of bell pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) berries.

BACKGROUND: Crops are exposed to recurrent and acute drought stress episodes during their vegetative and reproductive cycles, and these episodes are increasingly frequent due to ongoing climate change. Sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum), alias bell pepper, is one of the most widely cultivated vegetables and is grown in open fields worldwide. Here we assessed the effect of acute water stress, applied to a breeding line of sweet pepper at three stages of plant development: five true-leaves (Stage 1), production of the third flower (Stage 2) and setting of the first fruit (Stage 3), on the production…

Escherichia coli prosthetic valve endocarditis from a non-genitourinary source.

Escherichia coli (E. coli) is a rare cause of infective endocarditis due to its lack of traditional virulence factors that promote endocardial adherence. Previous case reports of E. coli infective endocarditis demonstrate specific risk factors to include advanced age over 70, female sex, diabetes, immunosuppression, and intravascular or cardiac devices. Antecedent genitourinary infection is the most common source. We present a case of a 55-year-old Honduran man with a recent bioprosthetic mitral valve replacement and tricuspid valve repair who presented with one month of subjective fevers, nig
