Posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) is a rare form of degenerative dementia, which is characterized by progressive atrophy of occipital and parietal cortical areas. It usually manifests as increasing difficulties of visuoperceptive abilities. Later on, memory and other cognitive functions are involved. Various pathologies have been associated with clinical PCA presentation, but most of the patients with autopsy have had Alzheimer-type pathology. Thus, PCA has been considered to be a rare form of Alzheimer-type dementia with unusual pathological distribution. Here we describe a patient who had a t

BACKGROUND: Although the ability of central corneal thickness (CCT) to predict development of primary open-angle glaucoma has become increasingly well recognized, the ability of CCT to predict severity of glaucoma remains uncertain. This study was designed to expand the available knowledge about the relationship between CCT and glaucoma severity.
METHODS: Retrospective identification of all patients with a clinical diagnosis of either primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) or ocular hypertension who were seen from September 2002 through May 2003 at the Albuquerque VA Medical Center eye clinic was

We analyzed the visual functions of two patients (MS, FJ) with bilateral lesion of the primary visual cortex, which occurred at gestational age 33 wk in MS and at postnatal month 7 in FJ. In both patients basic visual functions--visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, color, form, motion perception-are similarly preserved or modestly impaired. Functions requiring higher visual processing, particularly figure-ground segregation based on textural cues, are severely impaired. In MS, studied longitudinally, the deficits attenuated between the ages of 4.5 and 8 y, suggesting that the developing visual

The aim of the study was to asses the neurosensory retinal function in 12 patients (24 eyes) with different stages of Best's disease, by determining how pattern and full field flash ERG responses were related to visual acuity, stage of disease and extent of visual field loss. All patients had typically abnormal EOG responses and normal full field-flash ERG responses. Patients were stratified in two groups according to visual acuity. In the first group 12 eyes with visual acuity better than 0.5, all amplitudes and latencies of PERG P50 and N95 responses were in the normal range. Small central s

PURPOSE: Cataract and hearing loss are each common at older ages and together may influence the ability to function independently and affect the sense of well-being. For these reasons, we sought to estimate the risk factors for comorbidity of age-related cataract and hearing loss.
METHODS: A cross-sectional evaluation of a population-based cohort of older adults was conducted in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, for presence of age-related cataract and hearing loss. The study evaluation included taking standardized medical histories, measuring blood pressures, and obtaining blood specimens. Standardized

The standard for dark adaptation has long been the Goldmann-Weekers Dark Adaptometer(Haag-Streit). More recently, portable, relatively inexpensive LED-based dark adaptometers have become commercially available. These devices have potential use in areas with limited resources to screen for night-blindness, commonly caused worldwide by vitamin A deficiency. In order to determine the sensitivity to detecting changes in night vision, this study compared one such device, LKC Technologies Scotopic Sensitivity Tester-1 (SST-1) to the Goldmann-Weekers in patients with hereditary retinal degeneration a

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of screening tests for primary open angle glaucoma, both singly and in combination, using a decision analysis approach. A range of screening tests were carried out on 145 nonglaucomatous patients and 67 cases of previously undiagnosed glaucoma. Receiver operator characteristic curves were constructed for single test data to show the trade-off between sensitivity and specificity for varying cut-off criteria. The best discriminators of glaucoma were, in rank order: (1) a multiple stimulus static visual field screening test, (2) optic

BACKGROUND: Blue-on-yellow (B/Y) perimetry can reveal visual field defects earlier and larger in extent than white-on-white (W/W) perimetry. The Heidelberg Retina Tomograph (HRT) produces a three-dimensional image of the optic disc. The aim of this study was to compare the strength of the association of the B/Y and W/W visual hemifield mean deviation (HMD) variables with the optic nerve head (ONH) morphological variables of the respective area.
METHODS: We evaluated one randomly chosen eye of 40 normal subjects and 37 patients with ocular hypertension and different stages of glaucoma. The B/Y

OBJECT: The goal of this study was to evaluate the clinical potential of combining functional magnetic resonance (fMR) imaging with conventional morphological MR imaging and to assess its usefulness for objective evaluation of visual function as part of treatment planning in patients harboring space-occupying lesions involving the posterior afferent visual system.
METHODS: It was hypothesized that regional activation of the visual cortex during visual stimulation would show an asymmetric response consistent with the well-known retinotopical organization of the human visual cortex. To test thi
