Liver transplantation is the most effective salvage treatment for advanced liver failure, but its clinical application is limited by a shortage of liver donor, strict technology admittance, and complex and diverse issues in liver damage control before transplantation. We need to better understand the indications for liver transplantation in liver failure patients, select surgical timing correctly, and develop proper surgical regimens, in order to improve the rescue and cure rate of such patients. In addition, great achievements have been made in living-donor liver transplantation, auxiliary li

The relationship between blood groups and some infections such as norovirus, cholera, and malaria has been reported. Despite the importance of brucellosis, there is a lack of data on the relationship between blood groups and brucellosis. Thus, in this study, we examined the relationship between blood groups and brucellosis. In this case-control study, the blood groups of 100 patients with brucellosis and 200 healthy individuals were studied. Exclusion criteria for the control group consisted of a positive Coombs Wright test or a history of brucellosis. The chi-square test was used to compare q

Despite the presence of preformed antibodies against AB oligosaccharide epitopes on the donor vascular endothelium, approximately one-third of ABO-incompatible organ allografts are not rejected by a humoral mechanism. With the growing immune-manipulation of the recipient, survival rates can be raised considerably, although they remain significantly inferior to those of ABO-compatible transplantation. Data from the Collaborative Transplant Study indicate a 1-year graft survival rate of approximately 50-60% following cadaveric ABO-incompatible kidney, liver or heart transplantation, compared wit

This clinical retrospective study investigated the difficulties in diagnosing type 1 von Willebrand disease (VWD). A total of 246 patients previously diagnosed with type 1 VWD were reclassified into 'possible' type 1 VWD (patients with low levels of VWF adjusted for the blood group and either a significant bleeding history or family history) and 'definite' type 1 VWD, requiring low levels of von Willebrand factor (VWF), a bleeding history and inheritance. On reclassification, only 144/246 (59%) patients had low VWF levels adjusted for blood group, 88/246 (36%) patients met all the criteria for

Infants on this island are known to have higher incidences of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia and alpha-thalassemia minor than Caucasians. In order to investigate the correlation between these two conditions, we collected a total of 110 newborns with alpha-thalassemia minor delivered at the National Taiwan University Hospital during the period from January 1985 through February 1988 for this retrospective study. The infants in the study group were ascertained to have the condition by the presence of Hb Bart's with a concentration from 3% to 13%, in the cord blood. None of them had glucose-6-phosph

It is shown that fetal alpha-fetoprotein (AF)-rich fractions, isolated by chemical methods, can inhibit the agglutination reaction of human AB red blood cells (RBC) with specific antisera. Hemagglutination was not inhibited by other amniotic fluid or umbilical cord serum proteins in equivalent concentrations or by other pregnancy-associated hormones. The inhibitory effect is related to the amount of antibodies and AF fractions. It seems that AF interferes with the interaction between the antibody and the cell-surface antigens by preventing the binding of the antibodies to the cells. It is sugg

Blood-group-specific glycoproteins obtained from ovarian cyst fluids of A1 and A2 persons were degraded with NaOH/NaBH4. The oligosaccharides released were de-N-acetylated with Ba(OH)2 and then hydrolysed with dilute H2SO4. The products were fractionated on columns of ion-exchange resin and the components isolated were re-N-acetylated with 14C-labelled acetic anhydride; further purification was effected by paper chromatography. The following trisaccharides: type 1, GalNAc(alpha 1-3)Gal(beta 1-3)GlcNAc; type 2, GalNAc(alpha 1-3)-Gal(beta 1-4)GlcNAc; type 3 (reduced), GalNAc(alpha 1-3)Gal (beta

Patients showing red cell loss following severe burns have been considered in two groups, the more severe cases with late haemoglobinuria and the more numerous less severe cases without late haemoglobinuria. Patients who had late haemoglobinuria usually belonged to group A or AB, showed a normal or increased osmotic fragility of red cells, and had received more than three plasma volumes of pooled plasma. It is suggested that this haemolytic anaemia may have been caused by the anti-A isoagglutinins in pooled plasma or serum. Patients showing red cell loss but who had no late haemoglobinuria had

BACKGROUND: In Japan, emergency blood transfusion practices including ABO-compatible, different blood group transfusion and uncross-matched, ABO-identical blood group transfusion are very limited possibly due to adherence to identical blood transfusion as well as fear of hemolytic reactions due to anti-A, anti-B, anti-RhD and unexpected antibodies. Purpose of the study is to examine the incidence of hemolytic reactions due to compatible, ABO-different blood group transfusion.
METHODS: We conducted a questionnaire survey regarding emergency compatible, different blood group transfusion in the

BACKGROUND: It has previously been shown that full-unit (200 mL) transfusions of red cells (RBCs) enzymatically converted from group B to group O by treatment with alpha-galactosidase (ECO RBCs) are both safe and efficacious for normal group O or A subjects.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: The present study describes the results of a comprehensive clinical and serologic assessment of 2-unit (400 mL) ECO RBC transfusions to each of four normal group O subjects (after each had donated 1 unit of whole blood).
RESULTS: Clinical (hematologic tests, chemistry analysis, urinalysis) and serologic analyses

In the present study, the frequency with which ABH incompatibility could be detected in platelet crossmatches was determined. The effect of chloroquine elution on ABH antigens was also evaluated, and a technique was developed to remove IgG anti-A from group O plasma using a chemically synthesized human blood group A trisaccharide antigen covalently linked to crystalline silica (Synsorb-A). Group O plasmas were found to be incompatible with 52 percent of group A platelets and 17 percent of group B platelets (p less than 0.05). In contrast, anti-A from group B plasmas rarely produced a positive

BACKGROUND: The ABO blood group system is one of the most clinically significant human blood group systems and is closely associated with pathogenesis, progression, and prognosis of numerous diseases. This narrative review synthesizes recent epidemiological evidence and explores potential mechanisms linking ABO to cardiovascular diseases, malignancies, diabetes, Plasmodium falciparum malaria, COVID‑19, and rheumatic diseases.
METHODS: We searched PubMed and CNKI up to September 2025.
RESULTS: Epidemiological studies consistently show non‑O blood groups have significantly elevated cardiovascu

BACKGROUND: This is a comprehensive report that has determined the occurrence of Myocardial infarction and Angina pectoris in "ABO" blood group system among patients with coronary artery disease in some areas of Sindh province of Pakistan.
METHODS: Three hundred patients with Coronary Disease (CAD) were selected from cardiology wards of LMC hospital Hyderabad, DMC hospital Karachi and PMC hospital Nawabshah. The patients were separated into two categories: myocardial infarction and angina pectoris. The patients with old myocardial infarction were also included. A careful history was taken, su

BACKGROUND: The pathogenesis of rosacea is not fully understood. The innate immune system is impaired in patients with rosacea. This leads to abnormal inflammatory cytokine release. It has been proposed that the molecular mechanism for the role of the ABO antigenic system in human diseases may arise from its relationship with the von Willebrand factor and several pro-inflammatory and adhesion molecules. To our knowledge, the relationship between ABO-Rh groups and rosacea has not been investigated previously.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and fourteen patients with rosacea and 258 healthy
