Preoperative and Postoperative Assessment of Rectus Abdominis Muscle Size and Function following DIEP Flap Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Prospective evaluation of rectus abdominis muscle function after deep inferior epigastric artery perforator (DIEP) flap breast reconstruction is limited. Elimination of muscle harvest with this procedure is theoretically associated with preservation of rectus abdominis function and minimization of abdominal wall morbidity. In this study, the authors evaluate the change in rectus abdominis muscle size and function after DIEP flap surgery. METHODS: Patients undergoing unilateral DIEP flap surgery were recruited prospectively. Using computed tomography, the change in preoperative to

MRI findings of postherpetic abdominal wall pseudohernia: A case report.

Herpes zoster is caused by the reactivation of latent varicella-zoster virus from dorsal root ganglia. Although infrequent, simultaneous damage to the anterior horn cells or anterior nerve roots at the same level may result in motor neuropathy. When motor involvement is localized in the abdominal wall, a pseudohernia may be the clinical presentation. We report a case of abdominal wall post-herpetic pseudohernia, with clinical, ultrasound and MRI correlation. MRI demonstrated increased T2/STIR signal intensity in the abdominal wall muscles, suggesting acute denervation. To our knowledge, this i

An insidious rectus abdominis muscle injury in an elite volleyball player: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Structural muscle injuries are characterized by acute and localized onset of pain. Abdominal muscle injuries are an insidious pathology in overhead athletes. However, only a few cases are reported in literature related to volleyball players, where clinical presentation may not have reflected the severity of the lesion. CASE PRESENTATION: An elite volleyball player, a 21-year-old Caucasian female, reported the onset of mild abdominal muscular pain, confirmed on clinical evaluation findings and self-reported symptoms. Abdominal muscle ultrasound was performed following 2 weeks of co

Pathophysiology of Neuromuscular Respiratory Diseases.

Gas exchange between the atmosphere and the human body depends on the lungs and the function of the respiratory pump. The respiratory pump consists of the respiratory control center located in the brain, bony rib cage, diaphragm, and intercostal, accessory, and abdominal muscles. A variety of muscles serve to fine-tune adjustments of ventilation to metabolic demands. Appropriate evaluation and interventions can prevent respiratory complications and prolong life in individuals with neuromuscular diseases. This article discusses normal function of the respiratory pump, general pathophysiologic i…

Influence of varied assistance levels provided by a dual-joint active back-support exoskeleton on spinal musculoskeletal loading and kinematics during lifting.

An active dual-joint back-support exoskeleton with motors at both lumbar and hip level was designed to reduce spinal musculoskeletal loading and preserve lumbar flexibility during lifting. A subject-specific controller estimated the moment actively generated by back muscles to counteract gravitational forces on the upper body, minimising a counter-productive abdominal muscle contraction. Eight subjects lifted a 15 kg load using free technique with four assistance levels, i.e. 0%, 30%, 50%, and 70% of the active moment. Time-averaged L5S1 compressive force and back muscle active moment estimate

Scoping review to compare the sphygmomanometer and pressure biofeedback unit in assessing core muscle strength.

BACKGROUND: A strong core is a key to stability, posture, and strength. To reduce back pain and improve functional movement deep abdominal muscles are targeted. Use a sphygmomanometer for reliable, objective core muscle strength and stability measurements based on the resistance applied. A pressure biofeedback unit (PBU) can provide feedback on core muscle function, helping to enhance lumbopelvic stability and overall core function. METHODS: A study compared two devices in assessing core strength. Electronic databases like PubMed, MEDLINE and Google Scholar were used to search for relevant ar…

Laparoscopic-assisted surgery for liposarcoma of the spermatic cord extending to the retroperitoneal cavity through the internal inguinal ring.

INTRODUCTION: Liposarcoma of the spermatic cord is a rare disease, reportedly treated with radical high orchiectomy. However, laparoscopic-assisted surgery for spermatic cord liposarcoma extending to the retroperitoneal cavity through the internal inguinal ring has not yet been reported. CASE PRESENTATION: A 78-year-old man had a spermatic cord tumor that extended to the retroperitoneal cavity through the internal inguinal ring and invaded the abdominal wall muscles. We performed laparoscopic-assisted surgery and successfully separated the tumor from the contiguous organs and vessels. The tum

Respiratory muscle incoordination in stuttering speech.

We investigated the role of respiratory muscle incoordination during stuttering by measuring esophageal, gastric, and transdiaphragmatic pressures to obtain subglottic pressure (Psg) and indices of diaphragmatic, rib cage, and abdominal muscle contraction during speech in normal volunteers and in severe stutterers. We found in contrast to the relatively constant subglottic pressure during normal conversational speech that speech in stutterers was characterized by failure to control Psg because of contraction of the diaphragm, rib cage, and abdominal muscles singly or in various combinations. A…

Vertically transmitted hypoplasia of the abdominal wall musculature.

The prune belly syndrome (OMIM 100100) is an association of bladder dilation with hypoplasia of the abdominal wall muscles. This malformation sequence is due to early urethral obstruction. We report a family with abdominal wall muscular hypoplasia as an isolated defect, not associated with the urethral obstruction sequence. The proband is a q3-year-old male who presented with abdominal wall laxity and severe constipation. His mother, maternal grandmother and younger brother had varying degrees of abdominal wall muscular deficiency and constipation. His mother's condition was aggravated by her

An Autopsy Case Report: Prune Belly Syndrome with Overlapping Presentation of Partial Urorectal Septum Malformation Sequence.

Prune belly syndrome (PBS) is characterized by a classical triad of congenitally absent abdominal muscles, bilateral cryptorchidism, and a malformed urinary tract. Urorectal septum malformation sequence (URSM) is identified with the absence of urogenital and anal openings. This case report describes a 15-week-old female fetus with megacystis, ascites and oligohydramnios in a 19-year-old nulliparous woman. The patient underwent preterm labor at the 33rd gestational week and delivered a female newborn weighing 2250 grams who died three days later due to progressive respiratory insufficiency. To …

Rhabdomyosarcoma in 8 horses.

This multi-institutional report describes 8 cases of rhabdomyosarcoma in horses. Four neoplasms were in the tongue and other areas of the mouth or head, 2 were in the abdominal wall, and 1 each was in right shoulder muscles and heart. Four rhabdomyosarcomas that were less than 10 cm in diameter were treated by surgical excision or radiation with no recurrence. Two neoplasms greater than 10 cm in diameter in the abdominal wall and the right shoulder were considered inoperable and led to decisions to euthanize the horses. Two neoplasms were incidental findings at necropsy. All the neoplasms were

[Abdominal dystonia in a patient with schizophrenia: a case report].

The case of 31-year-old woman suffering from schizophrenia with movement disorder is described. The patient had a 7-year history of schizophrenia. In course of the psychiatric treatment the patient presented dystonic movements within abdominal muscles. The dystonic movements were of mixed character, including voluntary and involuntary ones what might have suggested their psychogenic origin. Subsequent to the exclusion of the neurological origin of the movement disorder and poor response to antipsychotic treatment, clozapine was introduced resulting in full remission of positive symptoms and fu…
