Behavioral teratologic studies using microwave radiation: is there an increased risk from exposure to cellular phones and microwave ovens?

The objective of the investigations presented in this review was to determine if there are adverse effects due to chronic prenatal microwave exposure in rats at term and/or alterations in neonatal and adult offspring psychophysiologic development and growth. Following the establishment of a nonhyperthermal power density level of microwave radiation, pregnant rats were exposed throughout pregnancy to continuous wave 915 MHz, 2450 MHz, or 6000 MHz radiation at power density levels of 10, 20, or 35 mW/cm2, respectively. Teratologic evaluation included the following parameters: maternal weight and

Lycopene protects against ionizing radiation-induced testicular damage by inhibition of apoptosis and mitochondrial dysfunction.

Ionizing radiation (IR) is one of the key contributors that cause male infertility by disturbing spermatogenesis. Lycopene, a carotenoid with strong antioxidant properties, was shown to protect against oxidative damage induced by IR in several experimental models. The present study was designed to explore the possible protective effects of lycopene against IR-induced testicular damage in C57BL/6 mice. Mice were administered lycopene (20 mg/kg) by oral gavage for seven consecutive days prior to a single dose of whole-body X-ray irradiation (4 Gy, 1 Gy/min). We observed that lycopene remarkably

Health implications of exposure to radiofrequency/microwave energies.

ABSTRACT The rapid development of and the increase in the number and variety of devices that emit microwave/radiofrequency (MW/RF) energies has resulted in a growing interest regarding the potential effects on health of these energies. The frequency ranges considered in this review are: 300 kHz to 300 MHz (radiofrequency) and 300 MHz to 300 GHz (microwaves). Investigations have shown that exposure to certain power densities for several minutes or hours can result in pathophysiological manifestations in laboratory animals. Such effects may or may not be characterised by a measurable rise in tem

Preclinical quantitative in-vivo assessment of skin tissue vascularity in radiation-induced fibrosis with optical coherence tomography.

Radiation therapy (RT) is widely and effectively used for cancer treatment but can also cause deleterious side effects, such as a late-toxicity complication called radiation-induced fibrosis (RIF). Accurate diagnosis of RIF requires analysis of histological sections to assess extracellular matrix infiltration. This is invasive, prone to sampling limitations, and thus rarely used; instead, current practice relies on subjective clinical surrogates, including visual observation, palpation, and patient symptomatology questionnaires. This preclinical study demonstrates that functional optical coher

Basal cell nevus syndrome or Gorlin syndrome.

Basal cell nevus syndrome (BCNS) or Gorlin syndrome is a rare neurocutaneous syndrome sometimes known as the fifth phacomatosis, inherited in autosomal dominant fashion with complete penetrance and variable expressivity. Gorlin syndrome is characterized by development of multiple basal cell carcinomas (BCCs), jaw cysts, palmar or plantar pits, calcification of falx cerebri, various developmental skeletal abnormalities such as bifid rib, hemi- or bifid vertebra and predisposition to the development of various tumors. BCNS is caused by a mutation in the PTCH1 gene localized to 9q22.3. Its estima

Extensive corporeal fibrosis after penile irradiation.

A potent man with early signs and symptoms of Peyronie's disease 3 months in duration received 1,200 rad of external beam radiation to the penis and presented 5 months later with impotence. Physical examination revealed diffusely woody indurated corporeal tissue. Nocturnal penile tumescence testing was abnormal and pharmaco-cavernosometry demonstrated diffuse corporeal veno-occlusive dysfunction. Treatment by penile injections was unsuccessful. During penile prosthesis implantation bilateral rubbery erectile tissue was encountered, requiring extensive bilateral corporotomy and sharp corporeal

The role of the Ataxia telangiectasia gene in the p53, WAF1/CIP1(p21)- and GADD45-mediated response to DNA damage produced by ionising radiation.

The inducible response of the tumour suppressor gene p53 has been examined following exposure to DNA-damaging agents in Ataxia telangiectasia (AT) cell lines, an autosomal recessive disorder with multiple clinical and biological abnormalities including sensitivity to ionising radiation. The p53 induction was significantly delayed and reduced in the 8 AT cell lines examined over the 6 h following irradiation with no dose response in p53 induction being observed compared to control cells. The increase of WAF1/CIP1(p21) and GADD45 mRNA, two genes transcriptionally activated by p53, was also reduc

Effects of 700 MHz radiofrequency radiation (5 G lower band) on the reproductive parameters of female Wistar rats.

The advent of 5 G technology has raised concerns about its potential biological effects, particularly reproductive health being one key area of focus. This study investigated the impact of 700 MHz, a lower 5 G frequency band, on the reproductive health of female Wistar rats. The experiment analyzed the effects of short-term and long-term exposure to 700 MHz mobile radiation on female Wistar rats. Rats were divided into three groups (control, sham-exposed, and exposed), with sample sizes of n = 6 for short-term and n = 8 for long-term exposure. For short-term exposure, rats were subjected to 6

S100A4 facilitates radiation-induced tumor repopulation by driving polyploid giant cancer cells budding.

Radiotherapy, a pivotal treatment for colorectal cancer, is compromised by tumor repopulation, which is characterized by accelerated growth and increased treatment resistance. Although radiation-induced DNA breaks eliminate most cells, a subset of polyploid giant cancer cells (PGCCs) evade death through massive genomic amplification, subsequently undergoing depolyploidization via a viral budding-like process to generate proliferative progeny. Critically, these PGCCs drive tumor repopulation and underpin therapeutic failure. However, the molecular mechanisms that regulate PGCCs budding and the

Diffusion-weighted imaging in the follow-up of treated high-grade gliomas: tumor recurrence versus radiation injury.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Diffusion-weighted (DW) MR imaging is a means to characterize and differentiate morphologic features, including edema, necrosis, and tumor tissue, by measuring differences in apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC). We hypothesized that DW imaging has the potential to differentiate recurrent or progressive tumor growth from treatment-induced damage to brain parenchyma in high-grade gliomas after radiation therapy. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed follow-up conventional and DW MR images obtained starting 1 month after completion of radiation treatment with or without c

Serial proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy imaging of glioblastoma multiforme after brachytherapy.

The utility of three-dimensional (3-D) proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) imaging for detecting metabolic changes after brain tumor therapy was assessed in a serial study of 58 total examinations of 12 patients with glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) who received brachytherapy. Individual proton spectra from the 3-D array of spectra encompassing the lesion showed dramatic differences in spectral patterns indicative of radiation necrosis, recurrent or residual tumor, or normal brain. The 1H-MRS imaging data demonstrated significant differences between suspected residual or recurrent tum

A novel mutation in the XPA gene associated with unusually mild clinical features in a patient who developed a spindle cell melanoma.

BACKGROUND: Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) is an autosomal recessive disorder of, in most cases, defective nucleotide excision repair (NER) of ultraviolet radiation (UV)- and chemical-induced DNA damage. The condition is characterized by an increased sensitivity of the skin to UV radiation, with early development of pigmentary changes and premalignant lesions in sun-exposed areas of the skin, signs of photoageing and a greatly increased incidence from a young age of skin tumours including melanoma. Approximately 20% of patients with XP show neurological abnormalities of varying severity due to pri

Deficient innate immunity, thymopoiesis, and gene expression response to radiation in survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

BACKGROUND: Survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) are at an increased risk of developing secondary malignant neoplasms. Radiation and chemotherapy can cause mutations and cytogenetic abnormalities and induce genomic instability. Host immunity and appropriate DNA damage responses are critical inhibitors of carcinogenesis. Therefore, we sought to determine the long-term effects of ALL treatment on immune function and response to DNA damage. METHODS: Comparative studies on 14 survivors in first complete remission and 16 siblings were conducted. RESULTS: In comparison to sibl

Laryngeal amyloidosis causing hoarseness and airway obstruction.

Amyloidosis constitutes a fraction of 1% of benign localized laryngeal tumors and may occasionally be associated with systemic disease. A chronic, insidious, progressive, recurrent disease characterized by hoarseness, dyspnea, and stridor, it is caused by extracellular deposition of insoluble, abnormal tissue injurious fibrils. Submucosal lesions occur frequently in the vestibular folds and ventricles, less commonly in the subglottis and aryepiglottic folds and least on the vocal folds. Ultraviolet B induces hyperproliferation and modification of epidermal differentiation in normal human skin grafted on to nude mice.

BACKGROUND: For ethical and technical reasons, the in vivo biological effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation on skin are difficult to study in human volunteers. The use of human skin grafted on to nude mice may circumvent this difficulty. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effects of a single moderate UVB exposure on human skin grafted on to nude mice. METHODS: Modifications of epidermal differentiation markers and patterns of keratin expression were assessed from 24 h to 14 days after a physiological UVB irradiation characterized by the induction of sunburn cells. RESULTS: During the first 48 h

Ultraviolet B irradiation promotes tumorigenic and metastatic properties in primary cutaneous melanoma via induction of interleukin 8.

UV radiation has been shown to play a role in the initiation of human cutaneous melanoma, but its role in the development of malignant melanoma to the metastatic state is not very well defined. Although previous studies have concentrated on the effect of UV-B on the host immune response, the effect of UV-B on the tumor cells was not elucidated. Here we show that UV-B can induce interleukin 8 (IL-8) mRNA and protein secretion in human cutaneous melanoma with negligible expression of IL-8. UV-B-induced IL-8 was constitutively expressed 60 days after irradiation in tumors implanted in mice. Induc

Fibroblasts from patients with inherited predisposition to retinoblastoma exhibit normal sensitivity to the mutagenic effects of ionizing radiation.

Retinoblastoma (RB) is a cancer of the retina which characteristically occurs in early childhood. Bilateral RB is an inherited form of this disease. Such patients are at greatly increased risk of subsequently developing second tumors in mesenchymal tissue, especially in areas exposed to ionizing radiation therapy. Fibroblasts from bilateral RB patients have been reported to be more sensitive than normal fibroblasts to the cytotoxic effects of ionizing radiation. Because xeroderma pigmentosum patients have a hereditary predisposition to UV-induced cancer and the cells of such patients are abnor

Psychosocial effects of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.

The psychological factors surrounding the Chernobyl disaster include the sudden trauma of evacuation, long-term effects of being a refugee, disruption of social networks, illness, separation and its effects on families, children's perception and effects on their development and the threat of a long-term consequence with an endless future. Added to this was the breakdown of the Soviet Union with consequent collapse of health services, increasing poverty and malnutrition. These complexities made necessary new individual and social treatment methods developed in UNESCO Community Centres, within w
