Suicide Involving Intimate Partner Problems Among Immigrants in the United States.

Individuals facing intimate partner problems (IPP) often experience mental health issues, including suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Immigration status may increase risk due to the stress of acculturation and barriers to health care affecting immigrants. This study aims to identify patterns of risk factors among immigrants who died by suicide while experiencing IPP and explore variations in patterns by sociodemographic characteristics and suicide contexts. Data includes 17 waves of the NVDRS from 2003 to 2019, which includes 3,177 immigrants facing IPP. Latent class analysis identified distinc…

Cumulative Lifetime Adversity in a National Sample of Hispanic/Latino Immigrants: Exploring Construct Validity Across Six Hispanic/Latino Groups Using Data From the HCHS/SOL Sociocultural Ancillary Study.

Hispanic/Latino immigrants often experience significant adversity before, during, and after migrating to the United States. However, no extant studies have tested the construct validity of a cumulative measure of lifetime adversity with Hispanic/Latino immigrants. Our objective was to assess the construct validity of a comprehensive measurement model of lifetime adversity (i.e., adverse childhood experiences, adult chronic stress, adult perceived stress, adult acculturation stress, and lifetime ethnic discrimination) with a national sample of Hispanic/Latinos born outside the mainland United S…

An Examination of Cultural Values and Pain Management in Foreign-Born Spanish-Speaking Hispanics Seeking Care at a Federally Qualified Health Center.

OBJECTIVE: Most studies done with Hispanics illustrate their preference for self-management practices; therefore, examining the factors driving patients to seek medical care for pain management will help elucidate what patients want and need from their doctors for pain management. The aim of the present study was to obtain patients' perspectives and enhance our understanding of the cultural beliefs influencing pain management decisions of foreign-born Spanish-speaking Hispanics with low acculturation. METHODS: Twenty-four individuals (17 females and 7 males) with self-reported chronic pain co…

Latino adolescents' perceived discrimination in online and offline settings: an examination of cultural risk and protective factors.

Guided by a risk and resilience framework, the current study examined the associations between Latino adolescents' (n = 219; Mage = 14.35; SD = 1.75) perceptions of ethnic discrimination in multiple settings (e.g., online, school) and several domains of adjustment (e.g., mental health, academic), and tested whether developmentally salient cultural assets (i.e., ethnic identity) directly promoted youth adjustment or moderated the negative impact of discrimination on adjustment. Each of the 3 ethnic identity components (i.e., exploration, resolution, affirmation) demonstrated evidence of promoti

Predictors of adherence to treatment for latent tuberculosis infection in high-risk Latino adolescents: a behavioral epidemiological analysis.

The objective was to test whether theoretical variables predict adherence to treatment for latent tuberculosis infection in high-risk Latino adolescents. 286 Latino adolescents, age 13-18 years, were recruited from 10 middle/high schools in San Diego County, San Diego, USA. Participants completed a baseline interview and up to 9 monthly interviews. The cumulative number of pills consumed in 9 months was regressed on 16 independent variables, entered hierarchically in seven blocks. The final model accounted for 25% of the variance in adherence to isoniazid (INH), F (16, 230)=4.69, p<0.001. Adhe

Psychological and Emotional Well-being of Autistic Individuals with an Immigrant Background: Exploring Strengths and Challenges Through a Mixed-methods Systematic Review.

There is evidence of a high prevalence of autism within immigrant populations. However, the studies focusing on the lived experiences, well-being, and possible unique strengths in these groups, are relatively scarce. This systematic review aimed to synthesise existing research on the psychological and emotional well-being of autistic individuals from immigrant backgrounds, specifically examining the challenges and strengths inherent in this intersectional identity. A systematic review was conducted using the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. The following databases were accessed: DOAJ, ERIC, Google Scho

Alcohol-associated liver disease in Asian Americans: the case for disaggregated analysis.

Alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) is an increasingly important contributor to liver-related morbidity and mortality in the United States, yet its burden among Asian Americans remains poorly defined. Most national datasets aggregate Asian Americans into a single racial category, obscuring important differences across East Asian, Southeast Asian, and South Asian populations. This approach reinforces assumptions that Asian Americans uniformly have low-risk alcohol use and low rates of alcohol-related disease, potentially concealing vulnerable subgroups. Emerging evidence suggests considerabl
