Valproic acid is commonly used in the treatment of both focal and generalized epilepsies and is often well tolerated. There are many reported cases of hyperammonemic encephalopathy and other well-known side effects reported during use of valproic acid either alone or in combination with other antiepileptics. This case report demonstrates valproic acid toxicity in the presence of lacosamide, which has not previously been reported. Full recovery occurred after withdrawal of both valproic acid and lacosamide.

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a clinically well-defined chronic condition of unknown aetiology characterised by chronic widespread pain that often co-exists with sleep problems and fatigue. People often report high disability levels and poor health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Drug therapy focuses on reducing key symptoms and disability, and improving HRQoL. Anticonvulsants (antiepileptic drugs) are drugs frequently used for the treatment of chronic pain syndromes.

A series of alpha-substituted-1,2,3-thiadiazoleacetamides were prepared and tested in vitro against tobacco mosaic virus. The preliminary bioassays indicated that some of the new compounds are good as compared to the commercial pesticide Virus A at 500 mg/L, and the activity was influenced by the nature of the substituents. 3D-QSAR models were established based on the antiviral activity of the compounds. It has also been found that some of the new compounds also exhibit significant anti-HBV activity in human hepatoblastoma-derived liver Hep-G2 cells.

Brain abscesses caused by Nocardia are rare, but it is very important to detect and treat them early because the associated mortality is 3 times higher than that associated with other bacterial brain abscesses. This infection is prevalent among adults on long-term immunosuppressive therapy; we report the case of a male kidney transplant recipient aged 12.7 years who developed early multiple Nocardia-induced brain abscesses that were successfully treated with linezolid, a novel antibiotic therapy.

Clinical trials have shown that linezolid (600 mg twice daily in adults) is safe and generally well tolerated for up to 28 days. Zaleplon ("Sonata") is a pyrazolopyrimidine derivative approved for use in the United States for the treatment of insomnia. To date, there has been little data in the toxicological literature where zaleplon has been implicated as causing a fatal intoxication, either alone or in combination with other drugs. This report documents a case where zaleplon was identified in a suicide by multiple drug ingestion. The following zaleplon concentrations were found: heart blood 2.2mg/l; bile 8.6mg/l and urine 1.4mg/l. Zaleplon was also detected but not quantitated in the kidney and liver.

The deleterious effects of three cryoprotectants, glycerol, dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), and dimethylacetamide (DMA), were compared on fowl spermatozoa. The viability and integrity of spermatozoa were measured with eosin-nigrosin smears. Glycerol was the least deleterious cryoprotectant, followed by DMA, and DMSO was the most toxic. A reconnaissance survey was conducted at a province-wide scale to document the occurrence of pesticides in drinking water from Québec, Canada. Twenty-four target pesticides were investigated in tap water from 340 municipalities across 17 administrative regions.
