Combined high-speed holographic shape and full-field displacement measurements of tympanic membrane.

The conical shape of the tympanic membrane (TM or eardrum) plays an important role in its function, such that variations in shape alter the acoustically induced motions of the TM. We present a method that precisely determines both shape and acoustically induced transient response of the entire TM using the same optics and maintaining the same coordinate system, where the TM transient displacements due to a broadband acoustic click excitation (50-μs impulse) and the shape are consecutively measured within <200  ms. Interferograms gathered with continuous high-speed (>2  kHz) optical phase sampl

Combined Amplification and Sound Generation for Tinnitus: A Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVES: In most cases, tinnitus is accompanied by some degree of hearing loss. Current tinnitus management guidelines recognize the importance of addressing hearing difficulties, with hearing aids being a common option. Sound therapy is the preferred mode of audiological tinnitus management in many countries, including in the United Kingdom. Combination instruments provide a further option for those with an aidable hearing loss, as they combine amplification with a sound generation option. The aims of this scoping review were to catalog the existing body of evidence on combined amplificati

Auditory neuropathy.

Neural disorders of the auditory nerve are associated with particular disorders of auditory perceptions dependent on processing of acoustic temporal cues. These include: (1) speech perception; (2) localizing a sound's origin in space; and (3) identifying sounds in background noise. Auditory neuropathy (AN) is a consequence of: (1) presynaptic disorders affecting inner hair cell ribbon synapses; (2) postsynaptic disorders of auditory nerve dendrites; and (3) postsynaptic disorders of auditory nerve axons. The etiologies of these disorders are diverse, similar to other cranial or peripheral neur

The effect of stimulus rate on the contralateral suppression of transient evoked otoacoustic emissions.

A new technique, which uses Maximum Length Sequences (MLSs) to enable the recording of TEOAEs at very fast rates, has been described previously. Such a technique enables rate studies to be carried out and here the effects of stimulus rate on the contralateral suppression of TEOAEs (Collet effect) have been studied. The results show that the Collet effect has virtually disappeared by a click stimulation rate of 2000 clicks/s. The waveform changes caused by the 'adaptation' due to increase in stimulus rate and the 'suppression' due to contralateral stimulation have been evaluated and compared. T

On ringing limits of the auditory periphery.

In classical hearing theory frequency and time have been treated as nearly independent acoustical dimensions. In this paper the interaction between temporal and spectral aspects is studied. An important determinant in this respect is the filtering of auditory stimuli in the cochlea. A view of auditory filtering that is balanced in frequency and time is obtained from the 'reverse-correlation function', abbreviated: revcor function. This function is derived from the response of an auditory-nerve fibre to a white-noise sound stimulus. It is a useful descriptor of peripheral filtering for a wide c

Topographic representation of periodicities in the forebrain of the mynah bird: one map for pitch and rhythm?

Coding of amplitude modulated acoustic stimuli was studied within isofrequency planes of the tonotopically organized field L, the avian analogue of the mammalian auditory cortex. The synchronization of unit responses to envelopes of sinusoidally amplitude modulated tones (AM) and repetitive noise bursts (RN) were determined as a function of envelope frequency (EF). From 249 synchronizing units, 66% were tuned to a best envelope frequency (BEF) using a synchronization criterion. BEFs varied from 0.3 to 380 Hz and showed an orderly representation within isofrequency planes orthogonal to the lami

Anencephaly and the nature of fetal response to vibroacoustic stimulation.

The fetal response to vibroacoustic stimulation has been used in recent years as a measure of well being. Vibroacoustic stimulation theoretically may evoke both tactile and auditory responses in the fetus. In clinical practice, it is important to distinguish which type of response is actually activated. An answer may be suggested through observation of two anencephalic fetuses who demonstrated no response to such stimulation. Neuroanatomic considerations are discussed that suggest which auditory mechanisms are involved in the fetal response to vibroacoustic stimulation.

Electrographic study of brainstem reflex myoclonus.

A patient with post-hypoxic brainstem reflex myoclonus was examined. In spontaneous jerks electromyographic activity started in the sternocleidomastoid and spread down the spinal cord bilaterally. A similar jerk was elicited by somaesthetic or acoustic stimulation. The patient's blink reflex suggested bilateral pontine lesions at least. Thus, the pattern of muscle activation pointed to a brainstem origin of the myoclonus. Spinal conduction studies conducted during the jerks suggested that the myoclonus signal facilitated a path identical to the spinobulbospinal reflex demonstrated in animals.

[Polymodal sensory input in command neurons of snails].

Putative command neurones of snail's escape behaviour reacted with excitatory postsynaptic potentials and spikes to tactile, vestibular, light-off and thermal stimuli evoking behavioural escape reactions. Presented data confirm the command function of identified neurones. No monosynaptic connections have been revealed between intracellularly recorded primary cells of the statocyst and command neurones, but it has been shown that command neurones reacted to strong stimulation of the acoustic nerve. Presence of second-order sensory neurones in the vestibular pathway was assumed.

Cross-modal exposure restores multisensory enhancement after hemianopia.

Hemianopia is a common consequence of unilateral damage to visual cortex that manifests as a profound blindness in contralesional space. A noninvasive cross-modal (visual-auditory) exposure paradigm has been developed in an animal model to ameliorate this disorder. Repeated stimulation of a visual-auditory stimulus restores overt responses to visual stimuli in the blinded hemifield. It is believed to accomplish this by enhancing the visual sensitivity of circuits remaining after a lesion of visual cortex; in particular, circuits involving the multisensory neurons of the superior colliculus. Crossmodal plasticity in hearing loss.

Crossmodal plasticity is a textbook example of the ability of the brain to reorganize based on use. We review evidence from the auditory system showing that such reorganization has significant limits, is dependent on pre-existing circuitry and top-down interactions, and that extensive reorganization is often absent. We argue that the evidence does not support the hypothesis that crossmodal reorganization is responsible for closing critical periods in deafness, and crossmodal plasticity instead represents a neuronal process that is dynamically adaptable. We evaluate the evidence for crossmodal

An imbalance of excitation and inhibition in the multisensory cortex impairs the temporal acuity of audiovisual processing and perception.

The neural integration of closely timed auditory and visual stimuli can offer several behavioral advantages; however, an overly broad window of temporal integration-a phenomenon observed in various neurodevelopmental disorders-could have far-reaching perceptual consequences. Non-invasive studies in humans have suggested that the level of GABAergic inhibition in the multisensory cortex influences the temporal window over which auditory and visual stimuli are bound into a unified percept. Although this suggestion aligns with the theory that an imbalance of cortical excitation and inhibition alte

Brain mapping of auditory hallucinations and illusions induced by direct intracortical electrical stimulation.

BACKGROUND: The exact architecture of the human auditory cortex remains a subject of debate, with discrepancies between functional and microstructural studies. In a hierarchical framework for sensory perception, simple sound perception is expected to take place in the primary auditory cortex, while the processing of complex, or more integrated perceptions is proposed to rely on associative and higher-order cortices. OBJECTIVES: We hypothesize that auditory symptoms induced by direct electrical stimulation (DES) offer a window into the architecture of the brain networks involved in auditory ha

Prepulse inhibition and recovery of trigemino-cervical reflex in patients with cervical dystonia.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to analyze the prepulse inhibition (PPI) and recovery rate (R) of the trigeminocervical reflex (TCR) in patients with cervical dystonia (CD). METHODS: We enrolled 15 patients with CD and 16 healthy subjects. TCR was recorded over splenius capitis after infraorbital nerve stimulation. For TCR-PPI, we applied a prepulse stimulus to the left second finger 100 ms prior to the test stimulus and the percentage of change of response to test stimulus was calculated. For TCR-R, we applied paired infraorbital stimuli at interstimulus interval (ISIs) of 300 ms and the percentage of c

Speech Planning at Turn Transitions in Dialog Is Associated With Increased Processing Load.

Speech planning is a sophisticated process. In dialog, it regularly starts in overlap with an incoming turn by a conversation partner. We show that planning spoken responses in overlap with incoming turns is associated with higher processing load than planning in silence. In a dialogic experiment, participants took turns with a confederate describing lists of objects. The confederate's utterances (to which participants responded) were pre-recorded and varied in whether they ended in a verb or an object noun and whether this ending was predictable or not. We found that response planning in over

Electroacoustic validation of a neck-based field attenuation estimation system.

Many commercially available hearing protector fit testing (HPFT) systems are able to measure personal attenuation rating (PAR) values for earplugs, but only a few are capable of measuring PAR with over-the-ear protectors and even fewer are able to estimate PAR values with double hearing protection. One approach that could potentially be used with any type of hearing protection is to modify the real-ear attenuation at threshold method to use an occluded threshold that is measured with circumaural headphones worn around the neck rather than over the ears. However, this method would only be valid

Visual Modulation of Acoustic Reflex Measurements: Insights Into Sensory Integration.

OBJECTIVE: The aim was to investigate the impact of visual tasks on acoustic reflex thresholds (ARTs) and AR latencies (ARLs) during AR measurements. METHODS: A total of 31 participants (17 female, 14 male; mean age: 20.3 ± 1.8 years) with normal hearing and Type A tympanograms were included. ARTs and latencies were measured using a 226 Hz probe tone under five distinct conditions: (1) resting with no visual task, (2) eyes comfortably closed, (3) fixed gaze on a stationary object, (4) saccadic eye movements, and (5) optokinetic eye movements. Data were analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA w

A Mouse Model of Tinnitus Using Gap Prepulse Inhibition of the Acoustic Startle in an Accelerated Hearing Loss Strain.

HYPOTHESIS: To develop a mouse model for temporary and persistent tinnitus using the gap startle paradigm. BACKGROUND: Behavioral animal models for tinnitus are classified into conditioning- and reflex-based types. Gap prepulse inhibition of the acoustic startle (GPIAS) is based on the acoustic startle modification by a silent gap and gap detection deficit caused by tinnitus gap filling. METHODS: We used C57BL/6J mice inherently susceptible to hearing loss and potentially predisposed to tinnitus. They were divided into the control, salicylate-induced tinnitus, and noise-induced tinnitus grou

Aural Acoustic Stapedius-Muscle Reflex Threshold Procedures to Test Human Infants and Adults.

Power-based procedures are described to measure acoustic stapedius-muscle reflex threshold and supra-threshold responses in human adult and infant ears at frequencies from 0.2 to 8 kHz. The stimulus set included five clicks in which four pulsed activators were placed between each pair of clicks, with each stimulus set separated from the next by 0.79 s to allow for reflex decay. Each click response was used to detect the presence of reflex effects across frequency that were elicited by a pulsed broadband-noise or tonal activator in the ipsilateral or contralateral test ear. Acoustic reflex shif

[Evoked otoacoustic emissions using clicks in detection of deafness in young children].

Click-evoked otoacoustic emissions (EOAEs) are sounds emitted by the cochlea due to active outer hair cell contraction following stimulation of the stereocilia. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of testing for EOAEs as a valid auditory screening method in newborns, and 1074 healthy fullterm babies (2148 ears) with an Apgar score higher than 8 at birth were examined. EOAEs were elicited 4 days after birth and a correlation index higher than 70% represented normal response criteria. If there was no response, EOAEs and brainstem response potentials were tested at the age of one mo
