Differential effects of generalized anxiety and separation anxiety on brain structural development during adolescence.

Excessive anxiety is highly prevalent during childhood and adolescence, with detrimental effects on somatic and mental health, and quality of life. Although structural abnormalities in the brain have been found in people with anxiety disorders, whether anxiety affects the brain development of children and adolescents remains unknown. Here, we applied a multivariate approach to two single-site MRI datasets consisting of 733 and 775 participants aged 5-18 years. Using linear support vector regression and cross-validation, brain age is estimated by predicting the chronological age from the featur

Development and validation of a Bayesian network predicting neurosurgical intervention after injury in children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Timely surgical decompression improves functional outcomes and survival among children with traumatic brain injury and increased intracranial pressure. Previous scoring systems for identifying the need for surgical decompression after traumatic brain injury in children and adults have had several barriers to use. These barriers include the inability to generate a score with missing data, a requirement for radiographic imaging that may not be immediately available, and limited accuracy. To address these limitations, we developed a Bayesian network to predict the probability of neuro

Within-person Relations between Domains of Socio-emotional Development during Childhood and Adolescence.

Adolescence is a critical period in the development of mental health with nearly 1 in 5 adolescents suffering from mental health problems and more than 40 percent of these experiencing at least one co-occurring mental health disorder. This study investigates whether there are differences in the relations between key dimensions of child and adolescent mental health in adolescence compared to childhood. Mental health and related socio-emotional traits were measured longitudinally at ages 4, 7, 8, 9, 11, 13, and 16 in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (N = 11279) using the Stren

Sexually divergent development of depression-related brain networks during healthy human adolescence.

Sexual differences in human brain development could be relevant to sex differences in the incidence of depression during adolescence. We tes … romosome, neurodevelopmental genes, and risk genes for MDD. We found normative sexual divergence in adolescent development of a cortico-subcortical brain functional network that is relevant to depression.

Accelerated epigenetic aging in adolescents living with HIV is associated with altered development of brain structures.

We recently demonstrated that adolescents perinatally infected with HIV-1 (PHIV+) have accelerated aging as measured by a highly accurate epigenetic biomarker of aging known as the epigenetic clock. However, whether epigenetic age acceleration in PHIV+ impacts brain development at the macro- and microstructural levels of brain anatomy has not been studied. We report on a cross-sectional study of PHIV+ enrolled in the Cape Town Adolescent Antiretroviral Cohort (CTAAC). The Illumina Infinium Methylation EPIC array was used to generate DNA methylation data from the blood samples of 180 PHIV+ aged

Child and adolescent maltreatment patterns and risk of eating disorder behaviors developing in young adulthood.

BACKGROUND: Child maltreatment may be an important risk factor for eating disorder (ED) behaviors. However, most previous research has been limited to clinical, female, and cross-sectional samples, and has not adequately accounted for complex abuse patterns. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether women and men with distinct patterns of child and adolescent maltreatment have higher risks of developing ED behaviors in young adulthood than individuals with a low probability of maltreatment. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Data came from 7010 U.S. women and men (95% White) in the Growing Up Today Study, a pr

Development of Disordered Eating Behaviors and Comorbid Depressive Symptoms in Adolescence: Neural and Psychopathological Predictors.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders are common in adolescence and are devastating and strongly comorbid with other psychiatric disorders. Yet little is known about their etiology, knowing which would aid in developing effective preventive measures. METHODS: Longitudinal assessments of disordered eating behaviors (DEBs)-binge-eating, purging, and dieting-and comorbid psychopathology were measured in 1386 adolescents from the IMAGEN study. Development of DEBs and associated mental health problems was investigated by comparing participants who reported symptoms at ages 16 or 19 years, but not at age 14

Emotional and behavioural problems of children and adolescents who stutter: Comparison with typically developing peers.

PURPOSE: There are several studies showing contradictory results on concurrent emotional and behavioural problems of children and adolescents who stutter (CAWS). This study aimed to identify whether there is a difference between Turkish-speaking CAWS and their typically developing peers (TDP) in emotional and behavioural problems. METHODS: The study group consisted of 45 CAWS, aged between 3.40 and 15.92 years, and the control group consisted of 45 TDP, aged between 3.15 and 16.80 years. Participants were divided into three age groups: early childhood (0-6 years), middle childhood (7-11 years

Changes in ventromedial prefrontal and insular cortex support the development of metamemory from childhood into adolescence.

Metamemory monitoring, or the ability to introspect on the accuracy of one's memories, improves considerably during childhood, but the underlying neural changes and implications for intellectual development are largely unknown. The present study examined whether cortical changes in key brain areas hypothesized to support metacognition contribute to the development of metamemory monitoring from late childhood into early adolescence. Metamemory monitoring was assessed among 7- to 12-y-old children (n = 145) and adults (n = 31). Children returned for up to two additional assessments at 8 to 14 y

Blunted Ventral Striatum Development in Adolescence Reflects Emotional Neglect and Predicts Depressive Symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Emotional neglect is associated with multiple negative outcomes, particularly increased risk for depression. Motivated by increasing evidence of reward-related ventral striatum (VS) dysfunction in depression, we investigated the role of developmental changes in VS activity on the emergence of depressive symptomatology as a function of emotional neglect. METHODS: We examined relationships between longitudinal neuroimaging of reward-related VS activity, assessments of mood, and measures of emotional neglect in 106 participants first scanned between ages 11 to 15 and then 2 years lat

Predictors of sense of coherence in typically developing adolescent siblings of individuals with autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may be a stressor for family members yet there is little published research on the impact of having a child with ASD on their typically developing (TD) adolescent siblings. According to Antonovsky's salutogenic model, a strong sense of coherence leads to the view that the stressor is a manageable challenge rather than a burden and promotes healthier adaptation. This study examines the relationship between stress, TD sibling resources and the sense of coherence in TD siblings. METHOD: This quantitative mail-based study uses a survey meth

Social bias and the development of self-control: results from a longitudinal study of children and adolescents.

Gottfredson and Hirschi's general theory of crime has sparked a tremendous amount of research examining the link between levels of self-control and involvement in delinquent and criminal acts. Recently, studies testing this theory have begun to investigate the factors that are related to the development of self-control. The current study expands on this body of research by examining whether social bias, as measured by the ability to identify facial expressions, contributes to variation in self-control in a sample of children. Analysis of data drawn from the National Survey of Children revealed

Characterisation of asthma that develops during adolescence; findings from the Isle of Wight Birth Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Understanding of adolescent-onset asthma remains limited. We sought to characterise this state and identify associated factors within a longitudinal birth cohort study. METHODS: The Isle of Wight Whole Population Birth Cohort was recruited in 1989 (N=1456) and characterised at 1, 2, 4, 10 and 18-years. "Adolescent-onset asthma" was defined as asthma at age 18 without prior history of asthma, "persistent-adolescent asthma" as asthma at both 10 and 18 and "never-asthma" as those without asthma at any assessment. RESULTS: Adolescent-onset asthma accounted for 28.3% of asthma at 18-y

Positive youth development and behavioral intention to gamble among Chinese adolescents in Hong Kong.

This paper examines the relationships between positive youth development and behavioral intention to gamble among Chinese adolescents in Hong Kong. Over a period of two years, four waves of data were collected from Chinese secondary school students who responded to validated measures of Chinese positive youth development and adolescent behavioral intention to gamble. Consistent with the general prediction and with the exception of social competence and positive and clear identity, results showed that positive youth development indexed by different indicators was negatively related to adolescen

Hormone levels and sexual development in Flemish adolescents residing in areas differing in pollution pressure.

In 2002, the Centre for Environment and Health in Flanders, Belgium started a human biomonitoring program. For 1679 adolescents, residing in nine study areas with differing pollution pressure, hormone levels and the degree of sexual maturation were measured. Possible confounding effects of lifestyle and personal characteristics were taken into account. Participants from the nine different study areas had significantly different levels of sex hormones (total and free testosterone, oestradiol, aromatase, luteinizing hormone) and the thyroid hormone free triiodothyronine, after correction for con

Development and characterization of a novel animal model of intermittent MDMA ("Ecstasy") exposure during adolescence.

Adult animals treated with high doses of MDMA ("ecstasy") either on a single day or for several consecutive days show numerous behavioral changes as well as persistent reductions in brain serotonin (5-HT) concentrations and 5-HT transporter (SERT) protein expression. However, such dosing regimens do not adequately mimic the intermittent use patterns commonly seen in adolescent recreational ecstasy users. We have developed and characterized a rat model of intermittent adolescent MDMA exposure that simulates many of the features of human weekend use. Animals treated with our dosing regimen exper

Frontal lobe involvement in the processing of meaningful auditory stimuli develops during childhood and adolescence.

Auditory event-related N1b reflects attention-related processing in bilateral temporal auditory cortex. Frontal contributions indicating an orienting reaction have been suggested. We analyzed the maturation of frontal contributions to the auditory event-related potential following the warning stimulus in a contingent negative variation (CNV) task by high-resolution current source density mapping and spatio-temporal source analysis in 80 healthy subjects and 121 primary headache patients (migraine with/without aura, tension type headache) from 6 to 18 years; as increased orienting responses and

Cannabis use and mood disorders: patterns of clinical presentations among adolescents in a developing country.

Notwithstanding the increase use of cannabis among adolescents in both developing and developed countries, few studies have looked at cannabis use and mood disorders. In a series of case studies, this research project seeks to investigate patterns of clinical presentations seen among cannabis users in psychiatric outpatients in Trinidad. Five clinical patterns of presentations are identified among cannabis users and abusers based on variables of dosing, age of initial use, duration of use, tolerance and reverse tolerance and poly-drug abuse. All patients in these case studies were standardized
