Current evidence on the role of viruses in the causation of psychiatric illness is reviewed. Herpes simplex encephalitis is relatively well defined but a wider role for this virus, particularly in relation to affective disorders, is suggested by some Scandinavian surveys of antibody titres in psychiatric populations. The extent to which influenzal illnesses and infectious mononucleosis may lead to neurotic, and occasional psychotic, episodes is the subject of controversy. The clinical literature is reviewed on the occurrence of encephalitis-like illnesses with prominent psychiatric and behavio

INTRODUCTION: Behavioral emergencies constitute an important component of emergencies worldwide. Yet, research on behavioral emergencies in India has been scarce. This article discusses the burden, types, and epidemiology of behavioral emergencies in India.

There appear to be few published studies that have examined the levels of agreement between ratings of features of depression as assessed by clinicians and by corroborative witnesses. We therefore report a study of 141 depressed patients assessed by a clinical psychiatrist at a semi-structured interview, reviewing family and historical data as well as depressive symptoms, and rated on a series of designated mental state signs. A family member completed questionnaire data assessing the same features. Moderate agreement was obtained only for several historical items (e.g., previous depressive ep

Background: On the current psychopharmacological panorama, the variety of substances able to provoke an episode of acute psychosis is rapidly increasing. Such psychotic episodes are classified according to the major category of symptoms: positive, negative, or cognitive psychotic episodes. On one hand, the abuse of methamphetamines, cannabis, and cocaine plays a big role in increasing the incidence of episodes resembling a psychotic disorder. On the other hand, the progress in terms of pharmacodynamics knowledge has led to the synthesis of new drugs, such as cannabinoids and cathinone's, which

It is known that psychotic patients have a reduced ability to evaluate reality and self-care. However, no case has been reported in which a breast lump was misdiagnosed as an insect bite and neglected, and a diagnosis of psychotic disorder led to metastatic breast cancer. A 44-year-old woman diagnosed with invasive breast cancer with brain metastasis became unresponsive with little reaction to verbal communication as a result of successive life-threatening events. After her presentation to the emergency department, she was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer as a result of detailed examina

Categorial systems of nosology are based on a cross-sectional enumeration of symptoms with a predefined cut-off, but hardly capture rapid fluctuations of manifestation nor longitudinal characteristics, e.g., cyclicity. Especially with disorders presenting with an admixture or frequent change of psychotic and affective symptoms, diagnostic specifity of the DSM and ICD diminishes. In those instances, alternative concepts as cycloid psychosis might display more accurately the very characteristics and course of a mental disorder and help to tailor individualized treatments. Karl Leonhard described

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a highly effective biological treatment in psychiatry with a history of nearly one hundred years. In contemporary clinical practice, its primary indications include treatment-resistant affec tive disorders, catatonia, and selected psychotic conditions. Although the overall use of ECT has declined internationally, with appropriate infrastructure and organization it remains a safe and effective intervention and can be delivered in an outpatient setting. The aim of this paper is to present the organizational, technical, and clinical changes implemented at the De

OBJECTIVE: To explore criminal characteristics of patients with affective disorder.
METHODS: Analysis was conducted in 72 cases of affective disorder diagnosed in Ankang Hospital, Public Security Bureau of Hangzhou, from 2000 to 2004.
RESULTS: There was a correlation between outbreak of the affective disordered and frequency of committing crime. There was a significant difference between the mania and the depression (P<0.01) with respect to harmful behavior. The criminal behavior characteristics of patients with affective disorder were different from that of the schizophrenia, with more real

The Camberwell Psychiatric Register was searched for contacts by the 2257 women resident in the register catchment area who were known to have had a child in 1970. Of these, 99 women (and 39 of their husbands) were found to have had a 'new episode' of psychiatric illness in the two years before or the two years after the birth of their child. The distribution of these 'new episodes' relative to the time of childbirth was then studied. In the women, both functional psychoses and depressive illnesses showed a sharp rise in the new episode rate in the three months immediately after delivery. Ther

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to determine the association between regular physical activity and mental disorders among adults in the United States.
METHODS: Multiple logistic regression analyses were used to compare the prevalence of mental disorders among those who did and did not report regular physical activity using data from the National Comorbidity Survey (n = 8098), a nationally representative sample of adults ages 15-54 in the United States.
CONCLUSIONS: Slightly over one-half of adults reported regular physical activity (60.3%). Regular physical activity was associate

Infectious diseases, especially hepatitis C, are prevalent among drug abusers. Interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) is the pharmacological treatment of choice for this condition. Patients being treated with IFN-alpha can be expected to experience such psychiatric side-effects as development of depression, mania, irritability, changes in personality, hallucinations or delirium. In addition, certain patients are considered to be at greater risk of developing neuropsychiatric side-effects. Individuals meeting the following criteria are particularly vulnerable: over 40 years of age; having central nervous

A patient is described who was diagnosed in an outpatient department as having paranoid psychosis and later chronic schizophrenia, which was treated with chlorpromazine. Two years later, the patient was admitted to hospital because of increasing confusion, disorganization, and numerous manic symptoms. Physical examination and serologic examination of blood and CSF confirmed the diagnosis of general paresis. Correct treatment led to the eventual discontinuation of neuroleptics and the cessation of paranoid and manic symptoms.

We present a case study of a patient who was hospitalized with the initial diagnosis of psychotic depression with predominant delusions of poverty. During his hospital stay despite antidepressant and antipsychotic treatment with 150 mg of sertraline and 20 mg of olanzapine per day, no symptomatic improvement was achieved. Besides, the psychotic features have risen to the fore along with inadequately vaguely expressed affective component. What drew attention was the coherence and permanence of delusional judgements, which, albeit variable in expression, always concerned one theme - the belief o

BACKGROUND: People with severe mental illness (SMI) are two to three times more likely to be overweight and obese than the general population and this is associated with significant morbidity and premature mortality. Although lifestyle interventions can support people with SMI to lose weight, some are unable to make the necessary lifestyle changes or, despite making the changes, continue to gain weight.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the feasibility and acceptability of delivering a full-scale trial evaluating whether liraglutide 3.0 mg, a once-daily injectable therapy, may be an effective treatment of

BACKGROUND: We aimed to examine the temporal relationships between traumatic events (TE), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and non-affective psychotic disorders (NAPD).
METHODS: A prospective cohort study of 1 965 214 individuals born in Sweden between 1971 and 1990 examining the independent effects of interpersonal and non-interpersonal TE on incidence of PTSD and NAPD using data from linked register data (Psychiatry-Sweden). Mediation analyses tested the hypothesis that PTSD lies on a causal pathway between interpersonal trauma and NAPD.
RESULTS: Increasing doses of interpersonal and
