Surface fixation is a rapid and simple method for the detection of antigen-antibody reactions. It has been used as an epidemiologic and diagnostic criterium for brucellosis, typhus and typhoid fever and recently found to be an encouraging test for amebiasis. Data concerning its application in toxoplasmosis has been considered a justified addition to the more complicated procedures used for the diagnosis of this infection, which has become a world-wide problem. It may thus be used as a screening test, as well as a simplified method of titration of postive sera.

Cold agglutinins are autoantibodies that can cause primary hemolytic anemia and RBC agglutination syndrome. Secondary agglutination of RBCs may be found in hypothermia, as well as in cancers, infections, and traumatic injuries. This report presents the case of a 37-year-old man who suffered multiple injuries in a motorcycle accident. On admission, the patient's laboratory tests showed a high concentration of cold agglutinins associated with low RBC count, hemoglobin, and hematocrit, and elevated mean corpuscular hemoglobin and mean corpuscular volume. Intravenous immunoglobulin treatment was e

Porcine brucellosis is one of the most important zoonoses in this country. Currently, there is no control program for porcine brucellosis in Argentina and the epidemiological situation is still unknown. The purpose of our study was to detect anti-Brucella spp. antibodies in swine in the southwest of the Buenos Aires province and the east of the La Pampa province. Blood samples were obtained when animals were slaughtered. The presence of anti-brucella antibodies was studied by the buffered plate agglutination test (BPA), the tube agglutination test (SAT), the 2-mercaptoethanol (2-ME) agglutinat

The paper with the comparative evaluation of serological tests in the diagnosis of human trichinellosis. The tests include ring precipitation test cold-precipitation test; agar diffusion technique; complement fixation test (cold binding); dermatol, carmine, and latex agglutination reactions. Serological tests applied to human trichinellosis were found to have different reliability. The most reliable reactions were those of ring precipitation, complement fixation test (cold binding) and cold- precipitation test. The agar diffusion technique was of little reliability only.

Co-agglutination (coagg) and latex agglutination (LA) tests were used for the detection of Salmonella serotype Typhi Vi and Barber protein (BP) antigens in sera from five groups of individuals (A-E). Group A consisted of 30 blood culture-positive cases of typhoid fever and group B consisted of 30 suspected cases of typhoid fever who had sterile blood cultures but positive Widal tests. Thirty cases of pyrexia of unknown origin (PUO) were placed in group C, while group D consisted of 15 cases of septicaemia caused by organisms other than Salmonella serotype Typhi. Group E comprised 50 normal hea

INTRODUCTION: Serological surveys are important to assess the health status of wild animals. In this study, antibodies against Leptospira spp, causal agents of leptospirosis, were detected in free-living marsupials in the State of Pará, Brazil.
METHODS: Nineteen blood samples collected from marsupials in the municipalities of Peixe-Boi, Viseu, and Castanhal were subjected to microscopic agglutination tests.
RESULTS: In total, 36.8% (7/19) of samples were positive, and two exhibited co-agglutination. The most frequent serovars were Icterohaemorrhagiae (60%; 3/5), Panama (20%; 1/5), and Nupezo…

A total of 80 patients at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) suspected of having enteric infections were screened for the presence of Salmonella species using blood, urine and stool samples along with Widal agglutination tests. Although 39 patients tested positive for the Widal agglutination test with titers ranging from 1:80 to 1:320, no Salmonella organism was encountered in some cultures. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences (chi2) at the 5% probability level between the Widal test and the cultures of the clinical samples. The results suggest that serological in…

Leptospira strains after treatment with trypsin released an antigen (Tx) which consisted of protein (4.2 mg/ml), carbohydrate (0.39 mg/ml) and hexosamine (0.025 mg/ml). Immunodiffusion, immunoelectrophoresis and indirect haemagglutination tests revealed serological cross reactions among the three strains used. Inhibition of microscopic agglutination reaction by the Tx antigen was observed in homologous system only. The antigen was partially sensitive to heat (80 degrees C for 10 min) as detected by immunodiffusion and microscopic agglutination inhibition. These data revealed the presence of se…

A number of ABO grouping, Rh typing, antibody screening, and antibody identification problems are associated with chemicals in blood bank reagents. We describe a newly discovered agglutination phenomenon due to a thimerosal (Merthiolate)-dependent agglutinin found in the serum of a normal blood donor. Thimerosal is used as a preservative in several low-ionic strength reagents. This agglutination phenomenon is detected only in test systems (low-ionic-strength, albumin, saline, ficin treated test cells) in which test cells are incubated in the presence of thimerosal. Agglutination does not occur

Agglutination of acetone treated toxoplasma (AC) is different from that one of formalin fixed parasites (HS). Sera from patients with a recently acquired ("acute") infection agglutinate both HS and AC parasites suspensions as well; contrary to sera from patients with past infection ("chronic stage") in which high titers of HS agglutination are often present, while the titres of AC agglutination are lower even negative. This is markedly observed in patients with local lesions (relapsing chorioretinitis, patients with AIDS and brain abscesses). The reason might be that different membrane toxopla

The comparative efficacies of direct bacterial agglutination and immunofluorescent antibody for the estimation of serum Vi antibody were determined in the detection of typhoid carriers. Sera from all 12 typhoid carriers gave significant titers of 1/10 or more in the direct bacterial agglutination test; however, 26 of 119 (21.8%) sera from culture-negative individuals were also falsely positive. In the fluorescent Vi antibody test, 11 of 12 typhoid carriers showed significant serum antibody levels, while only two of 119 (1.7%) culture-negative subjects had significant antibody titers. Brucella canis is the causative agent of canine brucellosis and facultative intracellular pathogen. The diagnosis of canine brucellosis is based on bacteriological examination and serological methods including agglutination and gel diffusion tests. In this study, crude antigens were extracted from B. canis using hot saline, coated on to latex beads and their usefulness in the serological diagnosis of canine brucellosis was examined. Mixing the antigen coated latex beads with the sera of dogs infected with B. canis produced clear agglutination, but this was not so for B. canis free dog sera. N-

Transmission of cytomegalovirus (CMV) to CMV negative transplant or blood recipients should be avoided in organ transplantations, since CMV infection of immunocompromised patients can result in severe illness. The infectivity of organ and blood donors is judged on the basis of CMV antibody, considering CMV IgG positives as potentially infectious. Several sensitive test systems are available for testing organ and blood donors for CMV IgG antibody which should be carried out prior to each transplantation. A series of sera were tested comparatively for CMV IgG antibody by latex agglutination test

An investigation was conducted to evaluate Staphylococcus aureus contamination in various types of food of animal origin. Of the 350 samples examined, 14.0% were found to be contaminated with S. aureus. Prevalence rates varied according to type, namely: 19.3% for fresh meat products, 13.3% for fresh cheeses, 3.6% for bakery products and 7.7% for deli products. The isolated S. aureus strains then underwent 16S rDNA polymerase chain reaction (PCR) followed by reverse latex agglutination tests to identify enterotoxigenic strains. The results were compared with data obtained by subjecting the same…
