The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Women's Reproductive Health.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly affected the lives of the global population. It is known that periods of stress and psychological distress can affect women's menstrual cycles. We therefore performed an observational study of women's reproductive health over the course of the pandemic thus far. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An anonymous digital survey was shared by the authors via social media in September 2020. All women of reproductive age were invited to complete the survey. RESULTS: 1031 women completed the survey. Mean age was 36.7 ± 6.6 years (range, 15-54). 693/70% reported r

Contextualizing condoms: a cross-sectional study mapping intersections of locations of sexual contact, partner type, and substance use as contexts for sexual risk behavior among MSM in Peru.

BACKGROUND: Condomless anal intercourse (CAI) appears to be increasing among men who have sex with men (MSM) globally, and is reported to be as high as 70% in recent studies in Peru. To improve understanding of the evolving context of CAI among MSM in Peru, we studied associations between partner type, substance use, and condomless anal intercourse (CAI) in locations where MSM commonly report having sexual encounters. METHODS: In a 2017 cross-sectional study of rectal STI screening and HIV prevention, a convenience sample of MSM recruited from community venues in Lima completed a survey of de

Cardiovascular risk prediction models for people with severe mental illness: results from the prediction and management of cardiovascular risk in people with severe mental illnesses (PRIMROSE) research program.

IMPORTANCE: People with severe mental illness (SMI), including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, have excess rates of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Risk prediction models validated for the general population may not accurately estimate cardiovascular risk in this group. OBJECTIVE: To develop and validate a risk model exclusive to predicting CVD events in people with SMI incorporating established cardiovascular risk factors and additional variables. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: We used anonymous/deidentified data collected between January 1, 1995, and December 31, 2010, from the Healt

Reasons for not Using Condoms among Heterosexual Men in Belgrade, Serbia.

Dear Editor, Proper and consistent use of male condoms can be a highly effective method of preventing the transmission of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV (1), but this method relies on men's willingness and ability to use condoms. In the United States of America, about 20% overall and less than 50% of adults with multiple partners used a condom at last intercourse (2). In Serbia in 2013 (3), 50.0% of women and 62.5% of men aged 15-49 who had more than one partner in the past year used a condom during their last intercourse. Heterosexual men often use condoms to prevent pregnancy

Mobile apps to reduce depressive symptoms and alcohol use in youth: A systematic review and meta-analysis: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Among youth, symptoms of depression, anxiety, and alcohol use are associated with considerable illness and disability. Youth face many personal and health system barriers in accessing mental health care. Mobile applications (apps) offer youth potentially accessible, scalable, and anonymous therapy and other support. Recent systematic reviews on apps to reduce mental health symptoms among youth have reported uncertain effectiveness, but analyses based on the type of app-delivered therapy are limited. OBJECTIVES: We conducted this systematic review with youth co-researchers to ensur

Projecting severe sequelae of injection-related hepatitis C virus epidemic in the UK. Part 1: Critical hepatitis C and injector data.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis C is transmitted by transfusion of unscreened blood, through injecting drugs, from mother-to-child and, on occasion, sexually. Transmission generally requires that the infector is hepatitis C virus (HCV) RNA positive, a 'carrier'. About three-quarters of injectors who are hepatitis C antibody positive are HCV-RNA positive and so infectious to others. Incubation periods from HCV infection to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma are even longer than from HIV infection to AIDS, being counted in decades; they depend on age, gender, alcohol consumption and co-infection with

OTC Medication Risk Literacy, Confidence, and Safety Behaviours Among Romanian Adults: A Cross-Sectional Scenario-Based Assessment.

Background: The widespread availability of over-the-counter (OTC) medicines supports self-care but also requires users to recognize medication-related risks and make safe decisions without direct professional supervision. Existing studies have often examined medication literacy, self-medication, or pharmacovigilance separately. To address this gap, we developed a questionnaire within the conceptual framework of OTC medication risk literacy to explore scenario-based OTC medicine risk recognition, self-assessed confidence, self-reported safety behaviours, information-seeking practices, and pharm

The Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Mental Health: A Web-Based Study Among Romanian Adults.

Background In Romania, as in other parts of the world, the family doctor is the first to make contact with a healthy patient and is also the first to notice even the smallest pathological changes. In the context of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic, the patient's communication with the family doctor became even closer and some behavioral changes could be easily noticed. Objective To assess the symptoms of anxiety and depression in the Romanian population using social media platforms in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods We conducted an anonymo

Pregnancy and other risk behaviors among adolescent girls in Ohio.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether teenage girls who had been pregnant were more likely to engage in other risk or problem behaviors than girls who had had sexual intercourse without becoming pregnant. METHODS: The 1993 Ohio Youth Risk Behavior Survey was administered to a random sample of 2461 high school students. A subset of 592 girls (mean age 16.1 +/- 1.1 years, 69.2% Caucasian, 24.1% African-American, 2.4% Hispanic, 4.3% other) reported sexual activity (SA) on the anonymous survey. Demographic factors plus risk and problem behaviors were compared between 98 girl

Usage of an App-Based Addiction Prevention Program for German Vocational Students: Secondary Analysis of Data From a Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Digital interventions have been successfully used to address addictive behaviors in adolescents and young adults. However, maintaining consistent usage remains a challenge. There is limited evidence on the determinants of usage with multiple behavioral interventions among vocational students. OBJECTIVE: This paper aims to describe how vocational school students used the app-based addiction prevention program "ready4life" and to analyze student characteristics as potential determinants of intervention usage. METHODS: A 2-arm cluster randomized trial evaluated "ready4life" among Ge

Presence of opioid safety initiatives, prescribing patterns for opioid and naloxone, and perceived barriers to prescribing naloxone: Cross-sectional survey results based on practice type, scope, and location.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The opioid epidemic is a public health crisis in the United States (US) and is associated with devastating consequences, including opioid misuse and related overdose. In response to the opioid crisis, the US Department of Health and Human Services is advancing improved practices in pain management. Strategies to help mitigate opioid risks include physician safety programs, hospital- or practice-based initiatives, patient education, and harm reduction campaigns that include the use of naloxone. To date, little information is available regarding the use of these strate
