Number of allergens to be tested to assess allergenic sensitization in epidemiologic studies: results of the European Community Respiratory Health Survey I.

BACKGROUND: Many clinical and epidemiological studies have measured the prevalence of IgE sensitization using skin tests and/or serum-specific IgE. Most of them have been done in only one country using a battery of selected allergens relevant to that country. In multi-centre studies, the number of tested allergens is often limited by the cost. It is therefore difficult to compare prevalence of sensitized subjects between studies. OBJECTIVE: To define the number and the type of allergen that should be tested in order to characterize a person as sensitized. METHOD: Subjects were selected from …

The allergens of nail polish. (I). Allergenic constituents of common nail polish and toluenesulfonamide-formaldehyde resin (TS-F-R).

Nail polish that has completely dried on the fingernails contains water-soluble components that attain the skin during extensive but transient contact. This was proven by water extraction of thin layers of nail polish that had been painted onto glass plates and allowed to dry for 3 days. Comparing the isolated fractions and compounds with known nail polish ingredients revealed that the water-soluble substances are para- and ortho-toluenesulfonamide, dibutyl phthalate and 3 constituents of toluenesulfonamide-formaldehyde resin (TS-F-R), which is the basic material of almost all nail polishes so

Metal allergy in dentistry: detection of allergen metals with X-ray fluorescence spectroscope and its application toward allergen elimination.

Numerous metal allergies possibly resulting from intraoral metal restorations have been reported, although the mechanism of onset is not yet completely understood. Allergen elimination may be the most effective treatment, and location of allergen metal becomes essential. The x-ray fluorescence spectroscope was used to detect the allergen metals in intraoral metal restorations and personal and household items of metal allergy patients. The apparatus was evaluated preceding its clinical application, and restorations and personal items for 381 patients were analyzed to detect allergens. Successfu…

Clinical efficiency of allergen-specific immunotherapy with fungal allergens in patients with chronic polypous rhinosinusitis against the background of fungal sensitization.

Fungal flora is one of the causes of inflammatory, including polypous, processes in the nasal cavity. In this regard, studies aimed at reducing the effect of fungal sensitization (FS) on the course of chronic polypous rhinosinusitis (CPRS) are relevant. The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of various treatment options on the clinical course of the disease in patients with chronic polypous rhinosinusitis against the background of sensitization to fungi. The study included 90 patients with chronic polypous rhinosinusitis in combination with FS. The patients were divided into two

House dust allergens of children with newly diagnosed hazelnut or sesame allergy.

Background: Hazelnut and sesame are among the leading causes of immunoglobulin E mediated food allergies in the eastern Mediterranean region. Notably, initial allergic reactions often occur on the first known oral exposure, which suggests a potential role of non-oral routes of sensitization, including environmental exposure. Objectives: The study aimed to investigate the presence of environmental hazelnut and sesame allergens. Methods: House dust samples were collected from the homes of children newly diagnosed, previously diagnosed, and nonallergic (control) with or without hazelnut or sesame…

Microbial metabolism of food allergens determines the severity of IgE-mediated anaphylaxis.

Anaphylaxis is an acute, potentially life-threatening reaction, often triggered by foods and largely mediated by immunoglobulin (Ig)E. The human microbiota is known to influence oral tolerance, but the microbial mechanisms directly involved in IgE-mediated anaphylaxis remain unknown. Here, we demonstrate that human saliva and jejunum harbor peanut (PN)-degrading bacteria that metabolize immunodominant allergens (Ara h 1 and 2), reducing IgE binding and anaphylaxis. Isolated Rothia and Staphylococcus species degraded PN allergens in vitro, generating proteins with reduced IgE binding and limite…

Patch Testing to Identify Allergens Causing Pigmented Contact Dermatitis: A Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: One of the prevalent dermatological conditions identified among Indian patients visiting dermatology clinics is pigmented contact dermatitis (PCD). The gold standard for diagnosing PCD is patch testing. The allergen that results in PCD and its clinico-demographic pattern could differ. Identifying the common allergens will help the clinician while treating cases with PCD. AIM AND OBJECTIVE: To determine the clinico-demographic distribution of PCD and to establish the common allergens that are responsible by patch testing. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included 30 patients with P…

The prevalence of sensitization to food allergens in children with atopic dermatitis.

INTRODUCTION: Atopic dermatitis (AD) has a complex pathophysiology. The course of the disease is affected by both environmental factors and allergen hypersensitivities. Food and aeroallergens have a significant role in the pathogenesis and disease control. OBJECTIVE: In this study, it was aimed to determine the prevalence of food and aeroallergen sensitivity of children with AD. METHODS: Children under 18 years with AD who applied to pediatric allergy and immunology outpatient clinics were evaluated. All patients had a skin prick test (SPT) within most common food and aeroallergens. RESULTS…

Association between 19 Allergens and Chronic Constipation in Adults: NHANES 2005-2006.

INTRODUCTION: There are increasing reports of a link between chronic constipation and allergies in children. However, similar epidemiological evidence is limited in the general adult population. Therefore, in this study, we attempted to assess the association between chronic constipation and allergy in adults aged ≥20 years in the USA. METHODS: We established a logistic regression model to test the relationship between chronic constipation and 19 specific immunoglobulin E (sIgE) types in adults aged ≥20 years using large-sample data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey da

The clinical impact of cross-reactions between allergens on allergic skin diseases.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The route of allergen sensing via the skin appears to influence the immune system towards mounting a type 2 response, especially in genetically predisposed individuals. Allergens recognized this way may derive from microbial, animal, food, or other plant sources and trigger atopic dermatitis. Allergens can be grouped into families depending on their structure and function, harboring significant structural and sequence similarities. Cross-reactivity between allergens is believed to arise as a consequence, and to underlie the development of further atopic diseases. RECENT FIN…
