In vivo evidence for long-term CNS toxicity, associated with chronic binge use of methamphetamine.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine disturbances in regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) associated with methamphetamine abuse. METHODS: Using Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT), rCBF was measured in 20 men who had previously injected methamphetamine intravenously for over 30 months and who were now abstinent for a minimum of 9 months and for an average of 2 years. Values were compared with those in 12 healthy men who had never injected methamphetamine. RESULTS: While rCBF was significantly and disproportionately reduced in subcortical and dorsal cortical brain reg

Predictors of intention to change HIV sexual and injection risk behaviors among heterosexual methamphetamine-using offenders in drug treatment: a test of the AIDS Risk Reduction Model.

This study tested components of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) Risk Reduction Model (ARRM) for a sample of methamphetamine-using offenders in drug treatment. Analyses included the first two stages of the ARRM, problem recognition and intention to reduce risk (potential precursors to later possible behavior change), assessing predictors of intentions to increase condom use, reduce other sexual risk, and disinfect needles. Path analysis results showed potential applicability of the ARRM as a basis for intervention development for this population. There was a consistent effect of s

Childhood adverse events and methamphetamine use among men and women.

Women report extensive histories of childhood abuse, often leading to addiction. Studies assessing the same effects for men are lacking. This study describes childhood adverse events (CAEs) among methamphetamine (MA)-dependent men and women and assesses the relationship of CAEs to the onset and severity of dependence. Baseline and three-year interview data were collected for 236 men and 351 women. Dependent variables included onset of MA and severity of dependence. Women reported greater occurrence of all types of CAEs than men (28% vs. 13%,p < .01). Familial substance abuse was most predictiv

Why do we need an Addiction supplement focused on methamphetamine?

Methamphetamine is a substantial public health problem in many communities in the United States and in other parts of the world. In order to bring new knowledge about methamphetamine to policy makers, clinicians and researchers, this volume has compiled a set of articles containing new information about the drug and its effects. The articles contain information presented by researchers at two special methamphetamine meetings sponsored by the National Institute on Drug Abuse in 2005.

[The neurobiology of psychostimulant addiction].

INTRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT: Psychostimulant drugs encompass amphetamines, natural alkaloids like cocaine, and methyl-xanthynes. These drugs induce a strong dependence, manifested as sensitization and tolerance at a neurobiological level. Sensitization is currently being studied experimentally, and it is made up of two stages: initial induction and consolidated expression. During induction, the mesocorticolimbic circuit along with dopamine and glutamate changes in the ventral tegmentum play a critical role. During expression, addictive habits are consolidated through changes in the cortico-st

Acupuncture treatment of drug dependence in Pakistan.

Wen's technique of electro-acupuncture was used successfully for treatment of withdrawal symptoms of 19 drug abusers. The drug common to all was opium (eating as well as smoking). Other drugs were amphetamine, methaqualone (mandrax) and barbiturates by mouth and cannabis (charas) smoking. The sample of the study is too small to draw statistical conclusions, but it is worth stating that all the cases showed a definite response to electro-acupuncture and that their withdrawal symptoms, especially those of opium, were controlled within 30 minutes of the application. The need for subsequent treatm

Relationship between gender and psychotic symptoms in cocaine-dependent and methamphetamine-dependent participants.

BACKGROUND: It has been well documented that cocaine and methamphetamine use can lead to the onset of psychotic symptoms similar to schizophrenia. However, the research and literature on gender differences and stimulant-induced psychosis have been mixed. OBJECTIVE: The primary aim of this study was to investigate gender differences in the reporting of psychotic symptoms in cocaine- versus methamphetamine-dependent individuals. METHODS: Participants were recruited from the Los Angeles, California, community via radio and newspaper advertisements. All met Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of M

Reward-related decision-making deficits and elevated impulsivity among MDMA and other drug users.

BACKGROUND: The recreational drug, 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA; 'Ecstasy'), is a synthetic amphetamine derivative and a serotonin neurotoxin. MDMA use is associated with cognitive dysfunction and impulsivity, but since polydrug abuse is common among users it is difficult to attribute these problems specifically to MDMA. Moreover, few studies have examined reward-related cognitive processes. Our aim was to examine reward-related decision-making and impulsivity among MDMA users while controlling for polydrug use via appropriate comparison groups. METHODS: We examined decision-making

Club drug use in Germany.

In this paper the epidemiology of club drug use in Germany, including the use of 3,4-methylendioxy-N-methamphetamine (MDMA) known as 'ecstasy' and related substances such as speed, amphetamines, hallucinogens, and cannabis is described on the basis of five different surveys. Two of them are representative household surveys to monitor the licit and illicit drug use behavior of the German population. The third one is a longitudinal study aimed at exploring comorbidity and posited risk and protective factors in adolescents and young adults with specific emphasis on substance use-related disorders

[Functional neuroimaging of addiction].

Positron emission tomography studies investigating dopamine release by drug or reward demonstrated blunted dopamine release in relation to addiction to psychostimulants such as cocaine and amphetamine. However, recent studies reported that nicotine and gambling addiction showed opposite results. Several factors such as illness stage or neurotoxicity of substances could be considered for this discrepancy. Behavioral addiction such as gambling disorder is a good target of neuroimaging because it is free from overt neurotoxicity. However, even in gambling disorder, the results of fMRI studies inv

The relationship between 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) use in young adulthood and anxiety or depressive disorders in the mid-30s: Findings from the Victorian Adolescent Health Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine or "Ecstasy") is the fourth-most used illicit substance globally. While previous research found links between MDMA use and mental health outcomes, the direction and nature of this relationship remain unclear. This study assessed whether MDMA use in early adulthood increases the risk of anxiety or depression in mid-30s. DESIGN: A longitudinal, population-based study using doubly robust inverse probability treatment weighted regression analysis, a contemporary confounder adjustment technique, to examine the relationship between MDMA u

Health consequences of illegal drug use.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim of this article is to review recent research on the health consequences of illegal drug use and possible risk factors, with a particular focus on prospective evidence. RECENT FINDINGS: Mortality studies have revealed qualitative and quantitative changes in causes of death among heroin and injecting drug users (IDUs), probably due to increasing exposure to harm reduction programs, the introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), the aging of drug users, and rising concurrent use of illegal drugs and prescription drugs. For morbidity, nonfatal overdos
