Additional values of high-resolution gadoxetic acid-enhanced MR cholangiography for evaluating the biliary anatomy of living liver donors: Comparison with T2 -weighted MR cholangiography and conventional gadoxetic acid-enhanced MR cholangiography.

PURPOSE: To determine the incremental value of small field of view (sFOV) high-resolution (HR) gadoxetic acid-enhanced 3D T1 -weighted (W) magnetic resonance cholangiography (MRC) for evaluating the biliary anatomy of potential living donors by comparing it to T2 W-MRC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In all, 73 living donor candidates underwent gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI (3.0T) including three kinds of MRCs: 3D multislice T2 W-MRC, regular FOV (rFOV) (380 × 380mm, resolution 1.0 × 1.2 × 3.0 mm) 3D T1 W-MRC, and sFOV (256 × 208 mm, resolution 1.0 × 1.0 × 1.0 mm) HR-T1 W-MRC. The effectiveness of 3D animations to enhance understanding of cranial cruciate ligament rupture.

Cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture is one of the most important orthopedic diseases taught to veterinary undergraduates. The complexity of the anatomy of the canine stifle joint combined with the plethora of different surgical interventions available for the treatment of the disease means that undergraduate veterinary students often have a poor understanding of the pathophysiology and treatment of CCL rupture. We designed, developed, and tested a three dimensional (3D) animation to illustrate the pertinent clinical anatomy of the stifle joint, the effects of CCL rupture, and the mechanism

The effect of circle of willis anatomy and scanning practices on outcomes for blunt cerebrovascular injuries.

BACKGROUND: Limited research has explored the effect of Circle of Willis (CoW) anatomy among blunt cerebrovascular injuries (BCVI) on outcomes. It remains unclear if current BCVI screening and scanning practices are sufficient in identification of concomitant COW anomalies and how they affect outcomes. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included adult traumatic BCVIs at 17 level I-IV trauma centers (08/01/2017-07/31/2021). The objectives were to compare screening criteria, scanning practices, and outcomes among those with and without COW anomalies. RESULTS: Of 561 BCVIs, 65% were male

Characterization of mitral valve prolapse with cardiac computed tomography: comparison to echocardiographic and intraoperative findings.

A single imaging modality that can accurately assess both coronary anatomy and mitral valve (MV) anatomy prior to surgery may be desirable. We sought to determine the diagnostic accuracy of cardiac computed tomography (CT) to detect and characterize mitral valve prolapse (MVP) compared to echocardiography. Consecutive patients referred for 'single-source' cardiac CT for investigation prior to non-coronary cardiac sugery were identified. MV anatomy was assessed for MVP and results were compared to echocardiography and to intra-operative visual assessment of the MV. Comparison between the three

Trans-splenic anterograde coil-assisted transvenous occlusion (TACATO) of bleeding gastric varices associated with gastrorenal shunts in cirrhosis.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: There is a lack of consensus on the optimal management of fundal gastric varices (GVs) in patients with cirrhosis due to varied anatomy and hemodynamics. In this study, we evaluate the safety and efficacy of trans-splenic anterograde coil-assisted transvenous occlusion (TACATO) for preventing recurrent bleeding in fundal GVs associated with gastrorenal shunt (GRS). METHODS: In this 4-year study, patients with cirrhosis with GRS-associated GV bleeding, without prior esophageal variceal bleeding, ascites, or portal vein thrombosis, were eligible for TACATO. Trans-splenic acce

Anatomical fit of the oneKNEE tibia design using statistical shape modeling.

INTRODUCTION AND AIM: Modern tibial implants should be designed to achieve an optimal anatomical fit. The aim of this study was to evaluate how well a newly developed tibial implant design (oneKNEE® - B. Braun Aesculap, Tuttlingen, Germany) matches patient anatomy compared to three existing implant systems, using Statistical Shape Models (SSM). METHOD: SSMs for Caucasian and Asian populations were generated using CT scans of 120 Caucasian and 112 Asian osteoarthritic patients. Border anatomical variations were represented by individual anatomies from 14 Caucasian and 12 Asian patients. Tibial

Combining acetabular and femoral morphology improves our understanding of the down syndrome hip.

BACKGROUND: Hip instability is frequent in patients with Down syndrome. Recent studies have suggested that skeletal hip alterations are responsible for this instability; however, there are currently no studies simultaneously assessing femoral and acetabular anatomy in subjects with Down syndrome in the standing position. The aim was to analyze the three-dimensional anatomy of the Down syndrome hip in standing position. METHODS: Down syndrome subjects were age and sex-matched to asymptomatic controls. All subjects underwent full body biplanar X-rays with three-dimensional reconstructions of th

Advances in the Anatomy, Histology, and Embryology of the Dromedary (Camelus dromedarius) Brain and Spinal Cord.

The dromedary (Camelus dromedarius) represents a remarkable model of physiological and anatomical adaptation to extreme environments. While many researchers have focused on its unique metabolic and water-conserving abilities, the neuroscience underlying these adaptations are noticeable unexplored. This study reviews the latest findings in the anatomy, histology, and embryology of the dromedary nervous system. It highlights the gross and comparative neuroanatomy, emphasizing distinctive features of the central, peripheral and autonomic nervous systems, including the complex cerebral vasculature

Accessing the Pancreatobiliary System via Lumen-Apposing Metal Stents: A State-of-the-Art Review of Endoscopic Ultrasound-Directed Interventions.

The growing number of bariatric and oncologic gastrointestinal and hepatopancreatobiliary surgeries has fueled the increased need for biliary interventions in patients with surgically altered anatomy (SAA), where standard endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is often unfeasible. Traditional alternative methods, such as enteroscopy- or laparoscopy-assisted ERCP, are associated with technical and logistical limitations. Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-directed ERCP uses lumen-apposing metal stents (LAMS) to create temporary anastomoses between adjacent lumens, thus restoring access

The evolution of leaf traces in eupolypod ferns.

The expansion or reduction of structural parts is an aspect of phenotypic variation that leads to diverse form (e.g. digits in vertebrates, segments in arthropods, or petals in angiosperms). The number of petiole vascular bundles (leaf traces) in ferns is one such structure. Integrating traditional anatomy and developmental videography with phylogenetic comparative methods, we examined the evolution and development of fern leaf traces. Across the eupolypods - 80% of extant species richness - and their sister lineages, we observe four conserved vascular developmental units (VDUs) that consisten

Optimizing the management of venous disease: Expert consensus from a multinational panel of phlebology specialists.

Chronic venous disease and varicose veins (VVs) are highly prevalent yet remain inconsistently managed despite existing guidelines, with variability in treatment selection, patient stratification, and use of conservative therapies. This multinational initiative sought to establish expert consensus on key clinical questions in venous disease management. A Delphi-like process involved 38 phlebologists from 15 countries across Europe, North Africa, and Central Asia. Four thematic workshops addressed interventional and conservative approaches for both chronic venous disease and VV. Twenty predefin

The contemporary role of stereotactic radiosurgery for surgically inoperable cerebral arteriovenous malformations.

Surgically inoperable cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), including deep-seated, large, and eloquently located lesions, remain difficult to manage because the cumulative risk of hemorrhage must be balanced against the morbidity of curative microsurgery. Contemporary stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) has expanded beyond a salvage option into a precision-based strategy for selected high-risk AVMs. Volume-staged SRS enables biologically effective dosing for large nidus volumes while limiting exposure of eloquent brain tissue, and repeat SRS is increasingly recognized as part of planned lon

Human evolution and the obstetrical dilemma: The pelvic floor hypothesis.

Human childbirth is mechanically difficult because a large-headed, broad-shouldered fetus must pass through a comparatively narrow, twisted bony birth canal. Traditional explanations of this "obstetrical dilemma" emphasize the role of bipedal locomotion in inhibiting the evolution of a wider, more spacious pelvis. Yet recent evidence suggests that additional selective pressures shaped human pelvic anatomy. The pelvic floor hypothesis proposes that expansion of the bony birth canal would compromise the pelvic floor's stability by increasing the distance over which it must span to support the lo

Expanding boundaries: The evolution and future of living donor kidney transplantation.

Living donor kidney transplantation (LDKT) has evolved into a globally adopted clinical practice, driven by improvements in donor selection, immunological compatibility, and perioperative care. These advances have contributed to enhanced donor safety and improved early graft outcomes. Still, its uptake remains limited worldwide, influenced by differences in clinical infrastructure, surgical expertise, and programmatic priorities. A central procedural consideration in LDKT is the choice of kidney for procurement, right or left. Left donor nephrectomy is generally preferred due to favorable vasc

3D Geometric Morphometric Analysis of Calcaneal Morphology in Domestic Caprinae: Sheep (Ovis aries) and Goat (Capra hircus).

The calcaneus plays a critical role in balance, locomotion, and muscle attachment, making it a key structure for biomechanical adaptations. This study examined interspecies differences between sheep and goats, as well as intraspecies variations among different sheep breeds, in calcaneus morphology. A total of 128 right calcanei were analyzed using 3D geometric morphometric methods to allow detailed assessments of calcaneus shape and size. Among sheep, the Hamdani sheep displayed the largest calcaneus among the breeds, distinguishing them significantly from the others. In contrast, goats had a

Anatomical and volumetric description of the guiana dolphin (Sotalia guianensis) brain from an ultra-high-field magnetic resonance imaging.

The Guiana dolphin (Sotalia guianensis) is a common species along Central and South American coastal waters. Although much effort has been made to understand its behavioral ecology and evolution, very little is known about its brain. The use of ultra-high field MRI in anatomical descriptions of cetacean brains is a very promising approach that is still uncommon. In this study, we present for the first time a full anatomical description of the Guiana dolphin's brain based on high-resolution ultra-high-field magnetic resonance imaging, providing an exceptional level of brain anatomical details,

The genealogy of dwarfs: reproduction and romantic mythology in Goethe's New Melusine.

Goethe's studies of natural form have occupied generations of scholars and the discussion on the relationship between Goethe's thought and evolutionary theory has never ceased since Haeckel's claims in the late nineteenth century. In scholarship which has aimed to address the question of change in Goethe's concept of nature, the focus has been primarily on his scientific writings. Aiming for a comprehensive understanding of Goethe's thought on reproduction, this article sets out to contribute to the ongoing debate by focusing on his literary text The New Melusine, a story centred on a dwarf fi

The Mare: A Pertinent Model for Human Assisted Reproductive Technologies?

Although there are large differences between horses and humans for reproductive anatomy, follicular dynamics, mono-ovulation, and embryo development kinetics until the blastocyst stage are similar. In contrast to humans, however, horses are seasonal animals and do not have a menstrual cycle. Moreover, horse implantation takes place 30 days later than in humans. In terms of artificial reproduction techniques (ART), oocytes are generally matured in vitro in horses because ovarian stimulation remains inefficient. This allows the collection of oocytes without hormonal treatments. In humans, in viv
