Canine ancylostomiasis is an emerging soil-transmitted parasitic zoonosis that poses significant public and animal health concerns. Although Ancylostoma caninum and A. ceylanicum have been widely reported in India, molecular sequencing report on A. braziliense from Southern India remain limited. Therefore, the present study aimed to molecularly characterize the predominant canine hookworm species in dog faecal and soil samples in the urban community of Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. A total of 278 dog faecal and 243 soil samples were examined through flotation techniques using saturated sodium ch…

OBJECTIVE: Timely Schistosoma japonicum detection improves outcomes in schistosomiasis. Here, we established a double antibody sandwich ELIS … ross-reactivity was observed in healthy controls or patients with clonorchiasis, paragonimiasis, or ancylostomiasis, respectively. By contrast, false positives (5.7%) and cross-reactivity (6.5%-10%) were detected using an AWA-ELISA. The circulating antigen positive rates decreased significantly faster than that of the antibody detection after 6 months treatment ( …

OBJECTIVE: To establish priorities for zoonoses surveillance, prevention, and control in Bogotá, Colombia.
METHODS: A Delphi panel of exper … Escherichia coli infection, leptospirosis, and rabies. The diseases scored as lowest priority were: ancylostomiasis, scabies, ringworm, and trichinellosis. A total of 535 questionnaires were collected and analyzed. Respondents claimed to have had scabies (21%), fungi (8%), brucellosis (8%), and pulicosis (8%). Workers with the most limited knowledge on zoonoses a …

Parasitic nematode infections are treated using anthelmintic drugs, some of which target nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) located in different parasite tissues. The limited arsenal of anthelmintic agents and the prevalence of drug resistance imply that future defense against parasitic infections will depend on the discovery of novel targets and therapeutics. Previous studies have suggested that Ascaris suum ACR-16 nAChRs are a suitable target for the development of antinematodal drugs. In this study, we characterized the pharmacology of the Ancylostoma caninum ACR-16 receptor using t

Hookworm infection is associated with growth delay and iron deficiency anemia in developing countries. A series of experiments were designed in order to test the hypothesis that host dietary iron restriction mediates susceptibility to hookworm infection using the hamster model of Ancylostoma ceylanicum. Animals were maintained on diets containing either 10 ppm iron (iron restricted) or 200 ppm iron (standard/high iron), followed by infection with A. ceylanicum third-stage larvae. Infected animals fed the standard diet exhibited statistically significant growth delay and reduced blood hemoglobi

The Syrian Golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) has been used to model infections with the hookworm Ancylostoma ceylanicum. New molecular immunological reagents to measure cellular immune responses in hamsters were developed and used to determine the impact of A. ceylanicum hookworm infection on host cytokine responses and lymphoproliferation. Initial larval infection with 100 third-stage A. ceylanicum larvae resulted in predominant Th1 responses (upregulation of proinflammatory cytokines) that lasted for the duration of larval migration and continued up to 14 days postinfection (prepatency).

The reduced form of the tripeptide glutathione has been reported to reinitiate feeding by third-stage larvae of the hookworm Ancylostoma caninum. Investigations were conducted with the GSH analogue ophthalmic acid to determine the mechanism by which GSH stimulates feeding. Ophthalmic acid stimulated feeding, beginning at 1-2.5 mM and reaching a maximum by 10-15 mM, and also enhanced serum-stimulated feeding. The results indicate that GSH stimulates feeding by a specific, sulfhydryl-independent mechanism.

Aspartate transaminase and alanine transaminase levels showed considerable increase during initial (1 to 9 days) period of infection in all the experimental groups of mice and their level reached higher values than in the controls. The increase of enzymes was influenced by the degree of retention of worm load and the immunological damage caused by Ancylostoma caninum larvae within the host system.

The South American continent has been connected to Africa over millions of centuries. In prehistorical time, the filling of the Bering strait allowed passage on firm ground between Asia and North America. South American peopling has thus occurred from North America, through the Pacific sea and, from the 15th century A.C., through the Atlantic. Necator americanus was present in South America prior to the arrival of black slaves and its African origin is probably related to contacts between Africa and South America; the same applies to Leishmania donovani and Biom-Phalaria glabrata. Ankylostoma

This is a report of a case of massive cutaneous larva migrans in a 20-year-old man who also had pulmonary symptoms and larval invasion of the skeletal muscles. In sections of a muscle biopsy specimen taken 3 months after the initial cutaneous lesions, a third-stage Ancylostoma larva, probably A. caninum, was found within a muscle fiber.

Worm-free cats about 12 weeks old were infected with 100, 500, 1,000 and 2,000 third-stage larvae (L3) of Ancylostoma tubaeforme. The changes in packed cell volume (PCV) and haemoglobin content were monitored, and the worm populations developing in each infection recorded. Cats receiving infection doses of 1,000 L3 and above showed morbidity symptoms by the third week and a rapid decline especially in the PCV value. The low dose rates (500 L3 and below) produced an apparently symptomless condition without pronounced changes in the blood values. Adult hookworm populations were linearly related

Ancylostoma duodenale in 74 patients and Ascaris lumbricoides in 41 were treated with a single 150 mg dose of levamisole, a single 300 mg dose of mebendazole or the standard three-day regimen of 200 mg mebendazole daily. Levamisole cured all of the 25 hookworm patients and all of the seven Ascaris carriers to whom it was given and is recommended as the drug of choice in Egypt.
