Effects of Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitors and Angiotensin-Receptor Blockers in Heart Failure With Chronic Kidney Disease - Propensity Score Matching Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Whether angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI) or angiotensin-receptor blocker (ARB) exert beneficial effects in patients with concomitant heart failure (HF) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) remains uncertain. In this study, the effects of ACEI and ARB on long-term clinical outcomes in such patients were investigated. METHODS AND RESULTS: Study data were obtained from a multicenter cohort that included patients hospitalized for HF. A total of 1,601 patients with both HF and CKD were classified according to prescription of ACEI or ARB at discharge. The mortality rate was 19

A systematic review and network meta-analysis of the comparative efficacy of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers in hypertension.

Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers are drugs commonly used for the treatment of hypertension. However, studies on their comparative efficacy have not been extensively investigated. The current systematic review and network meta-analysis studied the comparative efficacy of the two antihypertensive treatment categories in reducing blood pressure, mortality, and morbidity in essential hypertension patients. A literature search was carried out in Medline and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials for placebo- and active-controlled, double-blind rando…

The Therapeutic Potential of Angiotensin-converting Enzyme and Angiotensin Receptor Inhibitors in the Treatment of Colorectal Cancer: Rational Strategies and Recent Progress.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common causes of cancer-related death in the world. There is a document that angiotensin (AT) which is found to be involved in the progression of CRC. Furthermore, Angiotensin receptor inhibitors (ARIs) and angiotensin-converting enzyme Inhibitors (ACE-Is) demonstrate activity in CRC by their inhibition of both Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) and Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and therefore present a potentially novel therapeutic strategy in colorectal cancer, which have summarized in the current review. Preclinical studies have illus…

Association of Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitors with Increased Mortality Among Patients with Isolated Severe Traumatic Brain Injury.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is associated with one-third of all deaths from trauma. Preinjury exposure to cardiovascular drugs may affect TBI outcomes. Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) exacerbate brain cell damage and worsen functional outcomes in the laboratory setting. β-blockers (BBs), however, appear to be associated with reduced mortality among patients with isolated TBI. OBJECTIVE: Examine the association between preinjury ACEI and BB use and clinical outcome among patients with isolated TBI. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of patients age ≥ 40 years …

The effect of three angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors on kynurenic acid production in rat kidney in vitro.

BACKGROUND: The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is commonly known to regulate blood pressure, water and electrolyte homeostasis, however it also exerts paracrine and autocrine actions on the kidney. Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE-Is), alongside their hypotensive properties, have been shown to decrease kidney function decline in animal models of nephropathy. Glutamate (GLU) is the main stimulatory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, however its importance in the periphery should also be considered. Activation of renal GLU receptors has been linked to normal kidney func…
