In tropical and subtropical countries, particularly in disadvantaged communities, tungiasis is a severe public health problem, which is often neglected by the authorities. The sand fleas Tunga penetrans, predominant in endemic areas, and Tunga trimamillata, whose cases in humans are less frequent, are the cause of this zoonosis. Domestic animals are potential reservoirs and disseminators of tungiasis, so controlling their infection would significantly advance the prevention of human cases. This literature review compiles the most recent studies and innovations in treating animal tungiasis. Stu

Host-microbe interactions within the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) play a pivotal role in shaping host physiology, ecology, and life history. However, these interactions vary across gut regions due to changes in the physical environment or host immune system activity, thereby altering the microbial community. Each animal species may harbor their own unique microbial community due to host species-specific ecological traits such as dietary habits, micro-habitat preferences, and mating behavior as well as physiological traits. While the gut microbiota in wild animals has received much attention ov

BACKGROUND: Cystic echinococcosis (CE), a neglected zoonosis caused by the larval stage of the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus, remains a public health issue in many developing countries that practice extensive sheep breeding. Control of CE is difficult and requires a community-based integrated approach. We assessed the communities' knowledge and perception of CE, its animal hosts, and its control in a CE endemic area of the High Atlas Mountains, Morocco.
METHODS: We conducted twenty focus group discussions (FGDs) stratified by gender with villagers, butchers and students in ten Berber villa

BACKGROUND: The southern Amazon Basin in the Madre de Dios region of Peru has undergone rapid deforestation and habitat disruption, leading to an unknown zoonotic risk to the growing communities in the area.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We surveyed the prevalence of rodent-borne Leptospira and Bartonella, as well as potential environmental sources of human exposure to Leptospira, in 4 communities along the Inter-Oceanic Highway in Madre de Dios. During the rainy and dry seasons of 2014-2015, we captured a total of 97 rodents representing 8 genera in areas that had experienced different deg

Animals commonly modify their behavior in the presence of a conspecific or in response to signals. This is particularly true in the context of aggressive exchanges, which animals use to form networks of social relationships and to communicate social status associated with those relationships. Although hierarchical structures are a widespread phenomenon that has been studied extensively, the dynamic communication processes, specifically chemical communication in this review, is relatively overlooked. In particular, it is the exchange of information during agonistic interactions that mediates hi

The gastrointestinal (GI) tract harbors a diverse population of microorganisms. While much work has been focused on the characterization of the bacterial community, very little is known about the fungal community, or mycobiota, in different animal species and chickens in particular. Here, we characterized the biogeography of the mycobiota along the GI tract of day 28 broiler chicks and further examined its possible shift in response to bacitracin methylene disalicylate (BMD), a commonly used in-feed antibiotic, through Illumina sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) region of f

Pets are not a major source of human infections but they can transmit certain diseases to man. This transmission usually is complex, requiring close contact with pets or their excretions and frequently involves a breach of sound hygienic practice. In some instances, pathogens of animal origin are acquired inadvertently because infectivity can persist after evidence of gross contamination has gone. Veterinarians participate in controlling zoonotic diseases by encouraging rabies vaccination and hygienic treatment of pet feces and urine, by supporting community efforts toward responsible pet owne

In the 1970s, under pressure from certain sections of society and thanks to initiatives by several scientific research teams, committees charged with improving the conditions of laboratory animals started to be created, first in the United States and subsequently in Europe. This led to the development of an ethical approach to animal experimentation, taking into account new scientific advances. In addition to the legislation designed to provide a legal framework for animal experimentation and to avoid abuses, this ethical approach, based on the concept that animals are sentient beings, encoura

OBJECTIVE: Japanese encephalitis (JE) is a mosquito-borne disease caused by JE virus (JEV) infection, detected for the first time in south-eastern Australia in 2022. In New South Wales (NSW), detections of JEV in mosquitoes and animal hosts, human JE cases, and climate and environmental considerations have informed which areas are considered high risk for JEV and which populations are eligible for vaccination (funded by Australian states and territories). However, early evidence indicates slower-than-expected uptake in these high-risk areas. We aimed to explore how community members and health

The early-life microbiome is increasingly recognised as a contributor to immune maturation and respiratory health. Early-life microbial colonisation is highly dynamic and shaped by multiple factors. Recently, the gut-lung axis has emerged as a framework describing bidirectional communication between the intestinal microbiota and the respiratory system via microbial metabolites, immune mediators and neuroimmune pathways. Although current evidence is largely derived from studies of bacterial communities, emerging data suggest that other microbial components, including fungi and viruses, may also

OBJECTIVES: While direct-to-consumer genetic tests are widely used in veterinary medicine, claims regarding communication and counselling issues have not been investigated so far. Our aim was to evaluate the communication channels encountered by clients when direct-to-consumer genetic tests are ordered, as well as access to genetic counselling to investigate whether these concerns are justified.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Checklists, email inquiries and direct-to-consumer genetic test kits were used to survey access to pre- and post-test counselling, as well as adherence to quality standards and

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a significant global public health threat that undermines sustainable development. In Benin, high AMR rates to common antibiotics, including last-resort treatments, exacerbate infection outcomes and healthcare costs. Inappropriate antibiotic use worsens this challenge. To address these issues, Benin implemented its National Multisectoral AMR Action Plan 2019-2024.
AIM: This study aims to assess the implementation of Benin's National AMR Action Plan 2019-2024 and identify critical gaps for future updates.
SETTING: The evaluation covered six of Ben

Yellow Fever (YF) is an acute viral hemorrhagic disease. Uganda is located within the Africa YF belt. Between 2019 and 2022, the Ugandan Health Authorities reported at least one outbreak of YF annually with an estimated 892 suspected cases, on average per year. The persistent recurrence of this disease raises significant concerns about the efficacy of current response strategies and prevention approaches. YF has been recognized as a One Health issue due to its interrelatedness with the animal and environmental domains. Monkeys have been recognized as the virus primary reservoir. The YF virus i

IN BRIEF: In the proestrus day, the neural and endocrine signals modulate ovarian function. This study shows vagus nerve plays a role in the multisynaptic pathways of communication between the suprachiasmatic nucleus and the ovaries where such neural information determines ovulation.
ABSTRACT: The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) regulates the activity of several peripheral organs through a parasympathetic-sympathetic pathway. Previously, we demonstrated that atropine (ATR) microinjection in the right SCN of rats during proestrus blocks ovulation. In the present study, we analysed whether the va

Parkinson's disease (PD) related to homozygous mutations in the Pink1 gene is associated with nigrostriatal dopamine depletion and a wide range of sensorimotor deficits. In humans and animal models of PD, not all sensorimotor deficits are levodopa-responsive. We hypothesized that the underlying mechanisms of locomotion, limb control, and vocal communication behavior include other pathologies. Here, Pink1 -/- rats were treated with an oral dose of levodopa and limb motor and vocal communication behaviors were measured. Levodopa significantly improved some aspects of locomotion but did not impro

Ewing's sarcoma (ES) is a primary bone tumor characterized by a chromosomic translocation between the EWS gene and a member of the ETS gene family, mainly FLI1, which leads to an aberrant transcription factor EWS-FLI1 that promotes tumorigenicity. Gap junctions are intercellular channels composed of transmembrane proteins (connexin: Cx), that allow direct intercellular communication between adjacent cells. Numerous studies have shown that tumorigenesis may be associated with a loss of gap junctional intercellular communication (GJIC). Loss of Cx43 expression was observed at the protein and mRN

Humans can be exposed to pathogens from poorly managed animal feces, particularly in communities where animals live in close proximity to humans. This systematic review of peer-reviewed and gray literature examines the human health impacts of exposure to poorly managed animal feces transmitted via water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH)-related pathways in low- and middle-income countries, where household livestock, small-scale animal operations, and free-roaming animals are common. We identify routes of contamination by animal feces, control measures to reduce human exposure, and propose resear

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a chronic disease characterized by a progressive increase in pulmonary vascular pressure and resistance, which subsequently leads to right ventricular dysfunction and is the main cause of death for patients. Most drugs used for treating PAH focus on blood vessels, but no definitive treatment for PAH-induced right ventricular dysfunction is known. Recent studies have shown that allicin has a beneficial effect on PAH; however, whether allicin has a protective effect on right ventricular dysfunction caused by PAH and its specific mechanism of action are st

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord injury (SCI) causes severe and persistent neurological dysfunction. Ferroptosis has been implicated in multiple neurological disorders, but its contribution to SCI and its relationship to myeloid-cell responses, inflammatory amplification and disturbed iron homeostasis remain unclear.
METHODS: We integrated public bulk RNA-sequencing and single-cell RNA-sequencing datasets with experiments in a rat SCI model to define ferroptosis-associated changes across the molecular, cellular and tissue levels. Differential expression, pathway enrichment, co-expression and protein-p

Epilepsy is increasingly recognized as a systemic disorder involving complex interactions between the brain and peripheral systems. Among these, the gut microbiota has emerged as a key regulator of host metabolism and immune homeostasis through the production of bioactive metabolites that mediate the communication between gut and brain. In recent years, growing evidence has linked gut dysbiosis to epilepsy, particularly in drug-resistant forms, and interventional studies targeting the gut microbiota in animal models suggest that microbiota-driven metabolic alterations may contribute to seizure
