Tibialis anterior tendon entrapment after ankle tightrope insertion for acute syndesmosis injury.

Ankle syndesmotic injuries often require anatomic reduction and fixation. Syndesmosis screw fixation is commonly used; however, this prevents physiological motion at the joint, often requires a second operation for screw removal, and may limit postoperative weight bearing. The Ankle Tightrope (Arthrex, Naples, FL) was introduced to allow physiological tibiofibular micromotion, early ankle range of motion, and weight bearing, and did not require a second operation for removal. For Maisonneuve injuries, or more severe syndesmosis instability, a second tightrope is required. This is advised to be

A biomechanical investigation of ankle injury under excessive external foot rotation in the human cadaver.

Numerous studies on the mechanisms of ankle injury deal with injuries to the syndesmosis and anterior ligamentous structures but a previous sectioning study also describes the important role of the posterior talofibular ligament (PTaFL) in the ankle's resistance to external rotation of the foot. It was hypothesized that failure level external rotation of the foot would lead to injury of the PTaFL. Ten ankles were tested by externally rotating the foot until gross injury. Two different frequencies of rotation were used in this study, 0.5 Hz and 2 Hz. The mean failure torque of the ankles was 69

Severe open ankle sprain (SOAS): a lesion presenting as a penetrating soft tissue injury.

The objective of this retrospective case study was to describe the incidence and clinical features of severe open ankle sprain (SOAS), defined as a tear of the lateral or medial collateral ligaments with an associated transverse tear of the skin over the corresponding malleolus. To this end, we reviewed the medical records of patients with SOAS managed between January 2005 and January 2009, using the databases of 3 different orthopedic trauma centers. Our review revealed 9 patients with SOAS, 7 (77.77%) of which involved the lateral ligaments and 2 (22.22%) of which involved the medial ligamen

Afferent mechanisms for the reflex response to imposed ankle movement in chronic spinal cord injury.

We have reported earlier that externally imposed ankle movements trigger ankle and hip flexion reflexes in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). In order to examine the afferent mechanisms underlying these movement-triggered reflexes, controlled ankle movements were imposed in 17 SCI subjects. In 13 of these subjects, reflex torques were recorded at the hip, knee and ankle in response to 5 ankle movement ranges, and 4 movement speeds. Subjects were tested using both ankle plantarflexion and dorsiflexion movements. The principal outcome measure, peak hip flexion torque of the induced refle

Arthrography, clinical examination, and stress radiograph in the diagnosis of acute injury to the lateral ligaments of the ankle.

We examined 188 consecutive patients, each of whom had an acute ankle sprain, using clinical stability assessment, stress radiographs, and arthrography to compare the reliability of these methods used in diagnosing lateral ligament ruptures of the ankle. Sixty-six of the ankles were treated operatively. Arthrography accurately detected ligament damage in all of the patients with this injury and revealed the extent of the injury in about 85%, whereas clinical examination and stress radiographs detected only about half of the injuries. The injuries and the results of these two methods were often

Footwear effect on the orthopedic injury profile in ankle and foot trauma caused by motorcycle accidents.

Motorcycle accidents represent a significant cause of trauma in developing countries such as Brazil. Within the possible lesions, lower limb injuries are among the most prevalent, with ankle and foot injuries causing a high incidence of morbidity and long-term sequelae. This may partly be due to the low use of protective footwear. Therefore, this study investigated the relationship between the prevalence and severity of lower limb injuries at the ankle and foot level in motorcycle accident victims and the use or non-use of appropriate footwear. To this end, data collection was conducted in the

Effects of foot rotation on ankle control and injury risk during badminton lunge landings.

BACKGROUND: The badminton lunge is a decisive yet injury-prone action that places substantial loads on the ankle, and toe-in, neutral, or toe-out orientations may alter joint mechanics and influence injury risk; however, evidence in sport-specific lunge contexts is scarce. This study quantified the biomechanical effects of different toe-orientations in badminton lunge landings using integrated motion capture, force measurement, electromyography, and finite element modeling. By uniquely combining EMG and FEA, the study provides evidence-based guidance for performance optimization and injury pre

Deep deltoid ligament injury is related to rotational instability of the ankle joint: a biomechanical study.

PURPOSE: In the athletic population, the prevalence of isolated syndesmotic lesions is high. To detect potential instability of the ankle is crucial to define those lesions in need of surgical management. The aim was to define how the extent of tibio-fibular syndesmotic ligament injury influences the overall stability of the ankle joint in a cadaver model. METHODS: Twenty fresh-frozen through knee cadaveric leg specimens were subjected to different simulated syndesmotic ligament lesions. In Group 1 (n = 10), the order of ligament sectioning was: anterior tibio-fibular ligament (ATFL), superfi
